Hi I'm James and I've been a King fan for a few years now, this is one of the books (i say that but really it's most of them) I really want to read. I've read a small bit of the start ages ago when I used it as a style module for english coursework. I know some of the ideas of the book but without huge spoliers coudl someone tell me what it's about? and does this link into the Dark Tower and the Crimson King?

Just read it, you won't be sorry.
There's a connection with D.T., but it's pretty indirect. The main character of Talisman, 30 or 40 years later, will be involved with Roland's quest and the preservation of the Tower. Much of what links Jack from The Talisman and the Tower series hasn't been written yet.
We all float down here.

The easiest answer to your question without giving anything away is that it's a coming of age story about a young man. And it's a coming of age story in true King fashion.
I'm guessing that this was one of the first five or six King albums I read. I know it wasn't the first, but it was quite early on. And I think it's a great "introduction" into Stephen King novels.
