View Full Version : For Ms. Mod (about closing threads)

Ms. M . --
Can't say I didn't see that one coming. I think I want to make a suggestion though; since bad things come in threes, someday whenever thread pops up that causes the Culture War to break out yet again, when the time comes to close that thread... do you think you might give advance warning, like "I'm shutting this b!tch down in twelve hours, please present your final arguments"... like that?
This morning I wanted to squeeze one last thing off to thank a couple of people for standing up for what they (and I) believe in before it was too late... and it was too late.
We all float down here.

Was going to answer this in a PM but thought it might be helpful to others to post the response here.
Even though there are times when it looks like things might be heading in the direction of closing a thread, it's been able to be turned around so I've given it more opportunity but other times things spiral out of control so quickly that leaving it open would not be in the best interest of the Board. I've on occasion thought that maybe just having a "time out" to give people a chance to take a breath and get emotions back in check could work. What I wouldn't want to see is a notice it will be closing in X number of hours that would just give the opportunity to get in one last punch.
I'm not 100% sure but I think you can still use the Thanks button even when a thread is closed. You could also send a PM to those you wanted to thank or post in their Profile if you want to make it more public.

Nobody wins when a thread deteriorates to the point that respectful debate cannot be continued.

This is great news. I'm like one of those lab rats hitting the crack dispenser when it comes to the thanks button.
I for one am glad when a thread that is spiraling out of control gets locked down. As some smart guy once said, "Pointing fingers always leads to pointing guns, because nobody listens to fingers."

None, but I find that swearing is quite cathartic. Fortunately I usually work in the office alone so I'm not offending anyone. I also make frequent use of an energy medicine technique called expelling the venom. Keeps the stress level tolerable. :smile2:

Did this make anyone else think of the scene from The Exorcist?

The really tricky part to learning the technique is getting the hang of that 360 degree head turn.

Please explain this technique...... Would I be fired for using it?

I'm assuming you mean the expelling the venom part, not the swearing (although I suppose that could get you fired depending upon where you work). :smile2: Let's just say it's not something you can do discreetly so while you may not be fired for it, you might have your co-workers wondering about your sanity. The instructions are a bit lengthy so I'll PM them to you.

Shame on you John for having your mind in the gutter.
I on the other hand was visualizing Ms. Mod driving around Bangor on her lunch break with a jelly jar full of snake venom, ready to douse the first person who tried to cut her off in traffic.

Guess I'm being a little obtuse. Sorry, I'm not getting it. :umm:
Venom is any of a variety of toxins used by certain types of animals.
In this context, the venom referred to is negative energy from stress, anger, etc.

I PM'd John. Had I remembered the Exorcist comment above, I would have associated that with expelling venom and why it would be a slip. NOW it makes sense! :smile2:

H,
Sorry Ms Mod, two nations divided by a common language yet again
It was vomit that Regan spewed in The Exorcist and here 'spewing venom' means 'hurling abuse'.
My apologies.

I can only say that I fully support Ms Mods decisions about any thread she closed. And any other decision she makes, for that matter.
It`s not easy moderating this site - there is only one Ms Mod on that side of the screen...and a couple hundred of us on this side...
And it`s a website of a worldwide celebrity, not some "who cares" web site that I moderate and yet I get headaches even from that small site...
This one ? Oh man...I wouldn`t have the patience for this...there would be bans and deleted threads left and right.:biggrin2:

well i'm assuming the thread in question is the Obama and racism thread hat i started. i think Ms. Mod did right by shutting it down. i had just posted in there how i commended most of the people in there for generally being civil... and then all hell broke loose and it started getting ugly. it's a shame too as i felt it was an important discussion and i had a lot more to say on the issue... but if people can't play nice and get along, then there can't be any serious discussion. i don't think divisive topics should be avoided simply because they are divisive, as a lot of very important topics can be very controversial, but they need to be discussed. people just have to learn to accept other's views on things and debate with facts, and in a respectful manner instead of this "i'm right and you're wrong" game so many people like to play. so thank you Ms. Mod for closing it before it got even more out of hand. :)

i read the dilbert strip for direction. ever wonder if the person who draws that one checks into the board? or does that person simply pay attention to the rest of the world. as the world goes, so goes the board? but awhile back, you know, there was a thread that locked down and a day later the pointy-haired boss told one of his employees, 'when you find a big kettle of crazy, best no to stir it up.' i wonder if any other crazy person has taken direction from dilbert? i mean, you know, you heard about gods and devils, cupcakes and dogs, but who's to say?

Hi,
I've noticed that often those who talk the loudest about tolerance and diversity tend to be the least tolerant when disagreed with.

In my family, when we encounter people who are crazy and not amusing, we back away slowly, smiling and nodding the whole way.
When we encounter amusing crazy people, we pull up a chair and say "Please, tell me more!"
So, I figure when it stops being informative or at least amusing and becomes abusive, it is time to pull the plug.
Sometimes, though, I am the brand of crazy that is not amusing.
I really hate it when that happens. And later I'm thankful if someone pulls the plug on me.
Ms. Mod is a moderating goddess and deserves to be treated as such.

Since you send mean spirited PM's yet accept none and don't allow any profile messages I will just simply say Shame on you Bluey. I have no choice but to do this on the open forum so my apologies to everyone in this wonderful lively thread. :bat:
