I am a cat lover and really enjoyed the idea of an avenging demon cat from hell.So much horror goes on in animal experimentation that one for the felines is an interesting alternative, albeit in the world of SKs imagination.:biggrin2:

Hi,

Yeah, great story, and yet another that we have to thank Ms Mod for making available to us in JAS.

Long days and pleasant nights

I'm NOT a cat lover (dog fan myself), and loved this story. Somehow a hellish cat makes sense in my eyes (no offense intended )

I have to agree. Especially a guy that made shedloads of money from experiments. Loved chalking one up for the pussycats!

Another cat lover here (the first half of my username* is a portmanteau of my name and the Japanese word for cat). I'm always nervous when a cat shows up in a horror story/novel/film/anthology series, because they usually appear as a victim, and I almost always STOP READING (/watching) when that happens, sometimes flinging the book away in disgust (I have never flung a television set.), so I was thrilled to see a cat as avenging angel. Er, so to speak...

I also love the half-mask marking. I've seen torties with half-black, half-tan faces, but never a half-black, half-white like that. I'd love to see the photograph that inspired this story... it sounds so interesting!

My all-black kitty approves of cat vengeance, even if he doesn't have a cool Phantom of the Opera mask. (my non-black kitty would probably approve as well, but I think he's disappointed that I bought a brand-new book instead of bringing him one from the library-- he loves to smell other houses and other pets on library books!)

Constantly Reading,
Anneko Martian

*The second half of my username? Back in fifth/sixth grade, kids thought it was hilarious to call me 'Martian'. It was the nicest thing they called me. Consequently, I spent a couple years having frequent Carrie-inspired daydreams...

This has to be one of my favorite short stories that SK has ever written. I never get tired of reading it.

I liked it but I wish the previous driver had died a different way, or that the ending was a bit different. I liked the ending though, so I would rather have seen a different ending for the buttler. It just seemed like it repeated itself a little.

I like the nod to Scott's Alien. I picture Liam Neeson as the hitman.

All cats are hellish-if they had thumbs they'd rule the world! Having spouted off with that, yeah-it's a good quick page turner!

*shiver..* I read it last night before bed and I had nightmares about it...before trying to sleep I looked sideways at both my cats.......

I really loved the image I got of when the hitman whips around after the old man says his target is behind him, and goes for his gun ready for a firefight. And then, just a kitty.
Priceless.

I had a good chuckle reading that part. My favourite story so far, still got the final 3 to go.

We had a strange black cat for about 15 years. She thought she was a dog with a prehensile tail (she enjoyed being picked up by it...don't ask me how we figured THAT out).

Her name? Diabla. We just called her 'Blackie" or 'Shithead." Didn't matter what she was called...the only thing that commanded her attention was the sound of the can opener.

Cats scare me. There was a joke I heard about cats and dogs. ( I am a dog lover.) It went something like this, "What's the difference between cats and dogs? Dogs come when you call them. Cats take a message and get back to you when they decide."

Our cats go a step further. They send their lawyers.

Hi,

Perhaps you should have told them that there wasn't no Sanity Claws?

Long days and pleasant nights

Sometime s I wish I didn`t read that story.
The image of the cat dissapearing through his mouth and the clawing it`s way out through the chest comes back to mind quite frequently...and it`s not the most pleasant feeling.

Good job, Steve, and Ms Mod, of course.
That`s real horror and good stuff when you can`t stop thinking about it.:)

Hey All,

I luv the story and the short shorty in Tales from the Dark Side. I admit I am a dog person, cats I'm not to fond of except the exotic one's:wow:. Don't get me wrong kittens R so cute, but house cat's I have an issue with. About the story, I thought it was a great revenge story; and Pharmaceutical companies will do anything to become more powerful. What comes around goes around and the cat got justice. I agree with mrblonde, Liam Neeson as the hitman, if there were a remake he would definitely be my first pick- liam Neeson ROX:love:.

It made me feel better to learn the Kings have a few cats hanging around. I'm guessing Mr. King prefers other animals, though, to cats, because of this cat and Church in Pet Sematary. There has been obvious fondness for dogs (Kojak, Cujo before he was bitten, Raider) in his works, but it's apparent to me he keeps his distance from felines.

Not me. I'll try to make friends with any cat I come across. They're fascinating creatures. That's why this story worked.

This story was great. Is actually my favorite story in Just After Sunset. And cat's are pretty creepy.

Isn't it weird how everytime you read a SK novel/novella about something (like cats, cars) he makes you feel scared about that thing? I love cats, but after I read that story I was afraid everytime I saw a cat xD Love the story, anyways.Wish it was longer.
