Did any of you have any idea who the Space Cowboy was going to turn out to be. I thought it was some sicko who knew she was alone in the cabin. I thought that all the references to the chainsaw Jessie heard off in the distance had something to do with him.

Hi! I assumed she was dreaming and turning shadows into the boogeyman. That's why I love the ending of this book so much when reality hits home.
The backstory provided by SK for Raymond Joubert is some of the creepiest stuff I've ever read...

Mr King, in several of his books, allow some evil presence to exist both in the main character's head and in the real world, leaving us with uncertainty as to its real existence. Was it made up, a result of a tired, exhausted mind? Or is it real? I thought it would end up something like that, and was actually pretty satisfied with the ending.

I recently reread this book and the ending still gives me the creeps! When he points and mocks her "you're not real" oooooooo FREAK OUT!!

I wasn't sure what to believe. Whether it was a figment of her disoriented, starving mind, or if he really was real.
That's what makes reading SK's novels so invigorating! He can twist your thoughts and feelings about the situation so well that you're practically living in the moment as though you were the main character!!
I did like how she escaped. Given the situation, I don't think any other way could've been done better.

I am reading "Gerald's Game" for the 2nd time. * I absolutely luv that SK adds some "LOST" info in this. As usual, astronomy & astrology & religious history too. From SK's descriptions, I just came across RF -;).

Yes, this book had some very unexpected twists towards the end. It was great.

Hi,
Wasn't Gerald's Game published years before 'Lost' started?

Yes. I was confused by that reference, too.

I do remember a 'Lost' reference in one of his books. I think maybe 'Under the Dome', not sure though.

I thought Jessie was imagining him as well. Some kind of physical manifestation of her death, or something like that.
On a side note, I wonder if the Space Cowboy ever heard of Space Lips?

All I know is that when she wakes up and sees a man's figure standing in the corner, my own bowels nearly released right then and there on my couch.

i also thought she was hallucinating, until the pearl earring & footprint, then i thought maybe there was an escaped lunatic from the local insane asylum possibly on a killing spree. the ending surprised me so much & was much more horrifying & disgusting & freaky & now i don't want to turn my lights off to go to sleep....:eek2: also i thought after the jar of cream incident, she was definitely going to die there, & i was horrified what happened next, it made all my hairs on my body stand up, that & the space cowboy, i've always been afraid of someone like him, could he really be real?:eek2:

I thought he was super natural, and he partially was. There is no other way to explain how he ended up in the back seat of her car talking about the voices.

I was under the impression that the Space Cowboy and Raymond Joubert were one in the same.

They were. The first post is asking what we thought of the Space Cowboys before we knew that twist.

Yes, he could indeed be real, that's what made me scared for Jessie.:eek2:

I forgot how much I loved this book until I read this thread. IMHO this was one of SK's scariest novels. I was not expecting how creepy it was from the synopsis. I'm thinking "ok some weird sex stuff, I can deal with that" way off base.

Same here, I thought at first it was just going to be some weird bondage stuff. I'm so glad I decided to read it anyway.:smile2:

I have to agree with you on this, it is by far(IMHO) one of the best endings to a King novel.
