View Full Version : What are you good at ?

I mean, really good at ?

John Lennon said:

"I`m an artist. Give me a frigging tube, and I`ll make something out of it."

Me ?
I`d say that I`m really good at surviving, think I proved that to myself about a million times. But I don`t know if that is a special gift, if I have had good training, maybe pure luck.
But I can`t think of one dang thing that I`m really good at, like something what people would remember me by.
Some folks say I can write a good story ( at least in my first language ), but I think that those stories are far from good.

My wife says that I`m good at being a husband.
Maybe that`s not to bad either.

But, I`m no carpenter, no painter, no writer, not a really good guitar player, well, all in all, no Da Vinci is hidden somewhere inside of me.

What are you good at, as in

" Lookie here what I can do ? "

I am really good at cooking and any type of fancy food display. Give me a few tomatoes, cukes, and parsley....I could make you a bouquet of flowers lol.
That is about it though.

That is a question that I have asked my self over & over - I can do plenty of things - I cannot say that I do anything well - "Jack of all trades - master of none" That is me.

I like to think that I am a good person though, a good daughter, sister, aunt, and that is something for sure . :smile2:

Hi,

Well, I think that'll do, no higher praise can a man get (and no better thing to be good at either IMO).

Me?

I'm mediocre at many things.

Long days and pleasant nights

(PS - But I'd like to think that I had been a good husband and my children think that I'm a good father)

Hey man I bet if other people are telling you the stories are good, they probably are! You're always your first and worst critic, and that first critic is always the hardest one to get around when you want to try something.

I'm the same way with art and the little writing I've done. Many people around me have praised both but something inside is just never satisfied with the work I did.

Maybe that critic inside would be quelled with enough practice. You should keep writing man, if you enjoy doing it. You certainly have mind-blowing and moving stories to tell from the things I've seen you post in the past. Isn't the subject the hardest part? You've got that covered, all you've gotta do is figure out the presentation. I know I'd read your stuff, Srbo.

There aren't a lot of things I'm to good at, but I am a good baker. The only other thing I can say I'm good at is being a geriatric nurse. These both just seem really natural to me, and I don't really have to work very hard to get things to come together with either one.

I have always been a good listener! I was voted by my peers as the best listener and easiest to talk to. It has been a mixed blessing. Complete strangers pour their life stories upon my ears. In the end I have learned that people love to be heard, so I listen with intent to make them feel validated!

I am also a good fitness instructor. It is something I LOVE to do. I believe when you do something that you truely enjoy it shows! I love to push my students. I also think that most people are capable of doing more than they think they can. So, I try to get that out of them. Just when they think they couldn't do another pushup, they do one more because I ask them to! It inspires me and then they feel inspired and the circle is complete.

This is funny; I asked my husband what I'm good at, and he said "yelling." LOL Then, I asked him to be serious, and guess what he says? "Climbing!" I've always been able to scale just about anything, but I wouldn't have thought of that in a million.

Natjen24

I tried thinking of something myself, but since you are your own worst critic, couldn't think of any, so I asked the person who knows me best, my husband.

Well, the first answer I'm not going to repeat (don't want to brag, Srbo :biggrin2:).
As for the others, I'm very good at getting my opinion across, I can talk someone under the table when I'm in the mood for it..
And apparently I come across as someone who lives on her emotions, he thinks that is my greatest asset, that I never calculate the things I do, that I mostly just act on my emotions.. So in short and translated :smile2: I'm good at being impulsive.

I would have to say that I’m good at surviving too. I just had surgery number 13 a week ago last Friday and I came out on top again. That improves my record to 11-2. Fortunately for me the two that I lost weren’t fatal. Maybe that would make me 11-0-2.

I am very good at many things - just most are intangible and the rest do not draw peoples admiration (or dollars).
I could be a world champion at the video game Galaga (I stole the arcade unit from a laundry mat and practiced). I write outstanding, odd, little things that don't have a market and are mostly just outstanding and odd to me (but I'm really good at amusing myself with it and having fun). I think I may have convinced my wife she is, in fact, a beautiful and wonderful woman (we don't encourage our ladies to feel that way:glare:).
There are many things I am very good at - but none worth bragging about. I suspect it is that way for most of us.

My wife is a wizzard at web design.
Man, those are really some skills.

But, more than that - she is the best wife and mother a husband and child can wish for.:smile2:

On the other hand - she is scared of Stephen King`s storys.
She likes listening about him, about his life and such, but his storys ?

First, I gave her " On Writing ". She read it all the way till the part where he explains how to write. She is no writer, so that`s where she stopped. Said it was really good and gave her a few laughs.

Then I gave her Carrie to read. Not to bad, she was satiesfied, wanted more.

And then I gave her - IT.

100 pages into the story, she comes out of the bedroom shaking...and she swears she got a grey hair or two by the time she read those 100 pages...then she looks at me and says: " This is the same guy who wrote Shawshank, Green Mile, Stand by me ? "

And from that moment on...she wont touch a SK book, no matter what I say.

She reads sometimes on the board here, she reads about his life...but the storys are a closed chapter.

She is still the best I`ve ever met.:smile2:

People tell me I am a good friend and I give good advice, but I don't know about the latter?! I do know I am good with animals, better than people. I have more patience with animals than I do humans. Hence my career choice, although it was not my first profession. I am also a good cook and almost did that for a living. Oh and I am a good driver. I always wanted to be a stunt driver. I think that would be fun!

I'm a fixer. I identify the problem, research the subject matter, then wargame the possible solution paths. My philosophy is that there is always a way. This skill is mostly born from being selfish. Having to pay someone else, to do something I should be able to learn how to do, is frustrating and humiliating for me.

Dexterity. Computer science. Animal handling. Heterosexual lover. Dancing. Engineering, like putting together the big puzzles in a way they'll stay together forever. Understanding where to put the right keystone, etc...

Those come to mind right away at least. I have amazing dexterity when it comes to using my fingers for complicated tasks. I have a tendency to flip and fidget items in my hands, helping to alleviate and discharge some of the 'nervous energy' I have that keeps me from ever sitting still. I can reach up and find a way to get a bolt into a nearly impossible piece of automotive where human eyes can't even reach. Granted, it's taken me over half an hour before on one bolt, but I suppose that's another thing I'm exceptionally and naturally good at: Being relentless.

Computer Science, Engineering... those are kind of like, natural, simple understandings. They're like an understanding of math, and it's properties. If you know how to apply the scientific method to a computer, hardware, software, etc... then you'll be able to diagnose and repair pretty much every aspect of a computer you could come across. I haven't bumped into a digital wristwatch that I couldn't program on the fly. I've never owned a VCR that spent more than 1/100th of it's time blinking 12:00. I just had to install a set of power window doors to a vehicle, adding new switches and everything, and that went off without a hitch, even though it was something I had never dabbled in before. Getting the remote starter completely installed too, and even adding my own aftermarket RPM gauge too.

The others are pretty close to the same category too. Being a good lover, being good with animals, and dancing are all about being honest and showing your passions. When a strange dog approaches me, it can tell from my smell that I'm happy to meet it and deal with it, I'll help it if I can, but until I meet it and learn it, I'm on my guard, and... let's be perfectly honest dog, I'm a lot bigger and quicker than you, and I do have more brains. I know where your throat is, and I'm gunslinger quick and always observant too. I'll know if you're a threat before you will. Hehe. Therefore, I've always been wonderful with horseback riding, with animal training, with animal rescue and anywhere where empathy is important. Heterosexual lovemaking... that's like dancing. It's something you're either born with intense potential ability in... or you'll never really invest much in.

Oh, and pushing the limits and therefore helping design the barriers. That's always come natural for me too. ;)

I'm not a bad guitarist, and I enjoy writing short stories. At the moment, I'm trying to get into mental health as a career and am starting by working with the charity, MIND, on an allotments programme which helps people with "gardening therapy." I've found that not only do I have much to learn about gardening, growing veg, etc, but that it is the hardest physical exercise I have ever known, bar none!

So, pretty good at music and writing, really bad at being fit for purpose on the allotments!
