Rumor has it that when J.J. Abrahms gets around to doing Dark Tower as either a series or movie, that it may be Christian Bale as Roland.......nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
It feels as if there should be a full scale petition to ensure this doesnt happen, who's with me? I'd say, almost anyone but him. However, I'd give Viggo Mortensen a screen test at least. Some would argue he doesnt have the chops, and that it would be sort of a bland choice since he's already done the epic Rings trilogy....however, I've seen his movies since then, and I think he could maybe pull it off. What are your guys ideas on who should play Roland? Also, if your with me on boycotting Christian Bale on this project, speak up. Concidering building a page specifically to petition against it,lol

NO CHRISTIAN BALE!!!! Listen, I like Christian Bale, he was great in American Psycho, and perfect for batman...but that would be suuuuch a HUGE mistake for Roland. I don't know who should be Roland, probably some ruggen no name would be best, someone that no one really knows.

I like Christian Bale, and I think he would work well in that role. I'm still in petition for Hugh Laurie... he is how I picture Roland son of Steven.

Darn, Christian Bale? Why not just as Johnny Depp? Or Leonardo? OMG!!! Please, I pray to whatever God there is, do not let this wonderful story be as poorly cast as The Stand miniseries
Save the movie Sai King!!! Ms. Mod activate your super power...use your delete key on this casting!!!

I'm sure theres plenty of unharvested talent out there! I'd hoped to see an unknown actor that could be just Roland and have our attention as such while watching the movie. (and forever after like Elijah Wood as Frodo came to be)
In any case, I believe that they'll make him fit the part. No manicures now!

Christian seems like a comercialy driven choice, (for selling seats in a theatre or getting ratings) but I did picture some one slightly older. Some one who looks a little more weathered, and experience worn. I'm not a huge movie buff so it would be a stretch for me to suggest one who I would think appropriate.

Is this verifiable? Where does this rumour originate?

Christian Bale? That's one movie adaptation I won't be seeing... That city boy is no more a cowboy-gunslinger than my 4 year old niece!

Ah, I'm okay with it. I thought he pulled off the cowboy look and feel in 3:10 to Yuma.

I think many of you are underestimating Christian Bale's diversity. Seriously. The man is mad talented and goes to extremes to fit a role (see The Machinist -- to top it off, he gained 100lbs of muscle in 6 months to play Batman immediately after. It doesn't get much more motivating than that). BUT, I don't want him to play this role, because, according to a NUTS Magazine (yeah, that's the magazine name) interview with Christian Bale, he's in the running to play Solid Snake in the movie adaption of the videogame series Metal Gear Solid, which I think he'll be PERFECT for and am praying will happen. If he plays this role, there's not doubt in my mind it will turn into another ambitious series for him. So he'll have Batman and Solid Snake. I really don't think he'll have time to pull off another ambitious project like The Dark Tower series.
So, I'm resting easy. However, if he doesn't play Solid Snake (which I will then yell profanities at the top of lungs), I'll be more than happy to see him in the Dark Tower movies, the reason being, I believe he'll do everything possible to get it right. Let's have a little faith. :smile2:

I'll rehash one of my own jokes here -- they should cast the baby from the eTrade commercials as Roland. He'll be the right age by the time anyone gets around to filming this!

I think there is some underestimating of Hugh Laurie going on. Look at his eyes..they're EXACTLY what I think of, when I think of Roland's eyes. He is tall and lean...like Roland....he would have to work on his voice and that's the only thing I can see holding against him play Roland.
http://www.cinecultist.com/archives/041110_hugh_laurie_11a.widec.jpg<------ Hell yeah, put him in some Gunslinger threads and have him deepen his voice and he's all set.

Who do you recommend? Jack Nicholson? :)

NO! Christian Bale wouldn't work-I concur with the Viggo vote. Viggo has played a gunslinger and pulled it off-WELL. Viggo can pull off looking both young and old-other actors are too baby-faced. Roland has to be strong-I picture him with a chiseled face, just like Viggo.

HMMM Interesting. I still like Viggo he is my #1 pick for Roland.

Viggo would be a strong number 2 for me. Like Hugh, he would have to work on his voice. His voice is naturally too high for Roland.

No Christian Bale
No Viggo Mortenson
and definitely not House
The answer:
DANIEL DAY LEWIS

NO NO NO Hugh Laurie. Christian bale has the talent and ability, but he is too young. He was quite the indie actor before Batman.
Daniel day Lewis could definately play Roland (he can play anyone), but my vote goes to Viggo, he reminds me of a younger, more sensitive Clint Eastwood.

Ugly up Javier Bardem a bit with some stage cosmetics, have him lose 30-40 lbs., add some steel-blue eye contact lenses, and get him a voice coach. That's my mental image of Roland.
Relax folks. The movie will never be made.

YES, Daniel Day Lewis would be perfect.
Have any of you ever seen There Will Be Blood? That's EXACTLY how I pictured Roland even before I saw TWBB.

Judy and I were talking about this the other day... What about Kevin Bacon as Roland? Has anyone ever suggested that? Ya gotta admit his face looks more and more like Roland's, the older he gets. And he's a great battle tested actor. And who else is there really? Everyone else has been shot down in one way or another.
