Its funny because this past summer, a couple months before I read this book, I was actually forced to use a Port-O-Pody or however you spell that, and while I was in there I was thinking Man, if I got trapped in here, even if it was only for an hour, that would be terrible. But I was okay. This story was really good, but gut-renching at the same time.

I loved this story too! For me this one is the short and REALLY powerful story that exactly tells what the Floridaykey stories are about.

Surviving and getting out stronger. Going thru **** and getting out as clean as possible.

I really enjoyed it. Once you look past the bad gunky the underlying story is quite thought provoking.
The relationship between Curtis and Grunwald is strained due to many prejudices on BOTH sides. Neither character is easy to empathise with as they both have flaws. Obviously I wanted Curtis to escape his "prison" but not really because I cared for him, more out of curiosity, a bit like reasoning how you would fit a square peg through a round hole. By crikey, it can be done!

Sometime's in life we all have to wade through a bit of shite (sorry Ms Mod) to get through the other side...if you are like me you will always come up smelling of roses though :wink2:!

This is my second favorite story in this book. I will never look at Port-a Potties the same way again!

when i was a little girl, we went to this camp out on the big lake. the lake has since pulled the camp into it, but on the other side of the road there was an outhouse. phew! it was, like a four-holer, the boards on the side let the sun in cause they were all dried out, but every time i had to use it, i'd look at those four holes (and hey, i think everyone peeks at what's down there, right?)--gruesome piles of turds and paper!--:D--but four holes! like, are three more people going to come bee-bopping through the door? flimsy hook lock on the thing. and the wood was always warm, so it felt like someone just departed, smelt like it, too. so man o man, yeah, crappy, all that! but look on the bright side. if you ever find yourself stuck, thank sk he wrote that how-to-get-out-of-porta-potties piece! :y:

I do think it was the best story of the bunch-- which is not necessarily the same as 'favourite'. I have extreme OCD, cleanliness being a big part of it, so of course it did give me the 'fate worse than death' chills and shudders.

But what makes a story good is the amount of... gee, what's a word that won't ignite unintentional pun-age? Look, the ick factor isn't what's relevant, in my mind. The character had an arc. He started out one way, went through hell on earth, and came out reborn.

And the denoument? Sublime.

Constantly Reading,
Anneko Martian

I loved it, especially the great humor. there is always some sort of sneaky humor in these stories and this one makes me laugh and feel sickened and sad for poor Curtis. the MF, got what was coming to him i might add, because if someone locked you up in a dirty potty booth and forced stuff to leak onto you, you'd pray for the man to suffer and the MF did when curtis paid him a little visit in that relaxing hot tub. i absolutley loved it.

Well it definitely leaves one with a visceral impression! I seriously retched a couple of times, though...

I have read that Steve would prefer hold us in suspense, terrify us or if he can't do that screw it " I'll go for the gross out!" Or something to that effect. In my opinion he definitely went for the gross out here but it was also an interesting predicament. Not my favorite in the collection but something worth pondering.

I loved that one!!! It was my fave of this book. The times I had to use those portable toilets I felt a little bit weird I should say. Always had the feeling somebody would be able to see or ''hear'' me. But the story made me feel kinda nauseaus at times, although I think it was so well constructed. Those blue tight cabins are not places for claustrophobic people for sure, and they smell like hell. I'll think twice before using those in the future. Just finished the book, and I loved all the stories, especially this one. :smile2:

Is it just me, or did anyone else experience a certain amount of sphincter clenching excitement during their read through? I nearly fell off my "stool" with shock at the subject matter-maybe it's just coz I'm an old "poop":umm:

I found myself in one of these not so lovely porta potties over the weekend.( My husbands endless quest for monster bass) My daughter was outside the door waiting and started playing with the latch where you can attach a padlock. She asks me Mom how would you get out if I latched this?? I immediately thought of In a very tight place. (started counting the screws in the floor 14 btw lol) I then told them how the main characterIn a very tight place escaped the porta potty, needless to say my daughters were grossed out and will probably have the porta potty willies from now on. Just after sunset is a terrific treasure trove of short stories.

I loved it. I thought it was funny in that toilet humour kind of way, but intelligently done. I also thought it was one of the best revenge stories I have ever read.:grinning:

This story is King at his Kingiest. The more i think about it, the more it kinda shocks me that a king fan would hate it. Ah well, different strokes.

It's ironic, but I liked it because I hated it so. It certainly gave me a visceral response, and for that you have to give credit where credit is due.

I'm glad Stephen wrote it. Someone else might have eventually thought of such a thing and written it poorly.

I just read JAS in the summer. It was such a great collection of stories. With "Tight Place" I knew how he was going to have to escape and was horrified at the thought, but I had to finish the story. It really was such a gross story, and one that "sticks with you" for sure. I wonder if there was any debate between Mr. King and his editor about including this one. It has to be the grossest story I've ever read.
