View Full Version : Where do you do your reading

JosephDurham

Do you happen to have a favorite spot in the house that you enjoy to do your reading? Is it in front of your fire place, on the couch, bed, in the office, on the floor, next to the boiler, et cetera?

I love to sit in my office, surrounded by piles of books, paper work galore, and so many books at my fingertips that I cannot wait to get to them.

Hi,

Welcome to the MB, and keep posting!

Bed is the favourite, but absolutely everywhere else as well.

Long days and pleasant nights

Well, Dear Sir, this question has been asked before but certainly deserves a re-run.

I read everywhere I can. My book travels with me. NO place is a bad place to read!:biggrin2: We do a lot of waiting in this world and there is no better time to have that wonderful book and to spend that waiting time reading, yes?:biggrin2:

I don't have much time in the day to read so I usually read on my lunch at work. If I'm not at work I usually read in my bedroom. they seem to be the only places I can find peace and quite. :oo:

I don't have a favourite place - if I have a book then ANY place is the perfect place, whether it be a bustling train or university or curled up on the couch with COPS on the box and a cat purring in my lap!

Usually, I have no time to read while at home, so I read at work, or when ever I can take time. I wish I had time to read a lot more than I do. Life.

My favorite reading place used to be my car (let me stress, NOT while driving). It's one of the few places I could be alone and find some quiet ... plus it's awesome to be able to pick up a book and do a bit of reading before work and/or during my lunch break. Right now I favor my bed (I do love my air-conditioning). I like to get on my knees beside it and prop the book on the mattress. It looks like I'm praying but I'm just reading.

(Or maybe I am praying, to the god of Words and All Good Readings.)

oh, I love this question~ I just finished reading the opening chapter of Italo Calvino's If on a Winter's Night a Traveler for English comp 1. (everyone go find it and have a read! it's very amusing)
Anyways, off track...

my favorite place to read is on a nicely cushioned chair near a window with indirect sunlight. :) Oddly, light bulbs make reading more difficult for my eyes.

Italo Calvino is quite an author for English Comp, LOL! But yes, he can be quite amusing. :)

Regarding the original question, when I have a choice, I like to read out on my porch in the daytime, and at night I like to sit in my recliner in the living room, with all the lights off except for my reading lamp.

Nowadays,as life is busy,I read everywhere I can - while waiting for the bus,in the bus, while waiting for a friend somehere,et.,etc.As mentioned before - I always try to have a book in my bag - preferably short stories collection.
Besides that I love to read at home on my sofa, surrounded by my books, candle light and something good to drink and eat.:biggrin2:And if it is a heavy book, this really is the most comfortable place to enjoy it - even if I want,I can't carry it around in my bag.:biggrin2:

I have not long moved house and my new favourite place to read is lounging on the couch in the conservatory. (Just call me a big ole couch potato...OK little couch potato .)

Anyway, I have just been reading out there for the last couple of hours, and we had the most wonderful thunderstorm. The rain was beating heavily on the roof and windows, extremely soothing. I was rather sad when it finished.

Mostly I read in bed, like many people. But I also read in the train when I go to Berlin to visit my daughter. It takes one hour to get there, and I sometimes almost missed to get out.

My favorite is my bed. But because I've been spending so much time in doctor's offices (both for me and my wife), that's become second. During the day, I have too many distractions to read anything except newspapers.

On a bus, in a car, in the grocery store. That's where I do my reading.

The water closet is where I get my best ideas. It's like giving birth, really. :grinning:

Hi,

I read on my bed, or in my writing chair with my feet on the desk (yeah, just gotta love it!), usually with no music on and my door closed - just me, the words, and the world they create.

Long days and pleasant nights

I just recently started walking on the treadmill at the gym during my lunch hour and believe it or not, I can walk on the treadmill and read at the same time! Now that's multi-tasking and talent all rolled in one! Love that I can read for 55 minutes straight with no interruptions!

I am fond of my hammock in the back yard under a big tree that looks like a mushroom cloud with Queenie my dog. I have to admit the bathroom, otherwise know as "the library" is another favorite. Best place in the house for not being disturbed.

As always, I have a book on hand. As I do A LOT of driving some of the best times to read are in construction delays. In the Great White North, there are only 2 seasons.

Used to be in bed, but I tend to stay up to late reading and get sooooo irritated with myself!

Now it's my favorite chair in my little living room looking out over my river view. Book + water view = Heaven.

But another fav is when my daughter is home from school and we go out to a little place to eat and read our books together. My mother and I used to do this many years ago and it's cool to be able to continue the tradition with my kid.

I was just thinking of this book last night. Must be ka...

it must be..

We aren't actually reading the entire book :sleepy:
Our text book is packed full of excerpts of stories, poems, essays etc..
It was only the first chapter, but I loved every word of it. I might have to hunt the book down and buy it for myself as a birthday gift.
Of course, the text book also an excerpt from Sai King's On Writing, which possibly provides more ka?

I'm the same way, Joseph. Stopping in the middle of a chapter is just torture for me.

I read everywhere. and that really does mean EVERYWHERE - walking in the street, riding buses, on the sofa, in bed, in the bathroom (:oo:), outdoors, in waiting rooms, on airplans, on the stationary bike at the gym, doing my stretches at the gym, walking to the supermarket, waiting in any type of line and probabely ties upside down to a flagpole. I can never understand what people DO with themselves if they don't read. I mean - what else is there?

I am not able to read a book anywhere else but my own bed.

Tried many different places - public and non public - but always got too distracted by my surroundings.

I like the quietness of the night, my pillow, crawling under my blanket ...and my wife sleeping next to me :wink2:

I know this limits the time I am able to read S.K. - but there is no other way for me to enjoy his books.

I used to go to Barnes N Nobel to read a lot of the time, but that was before I had kids. Now I don't get a chance to go out very much by myself. I now like to read in bed. I also like to read on the couch in my living room. I usually have to read after I put my kids to bed. This may sound funny, but I also read a lot on the toilet! I always have to take some kind of magazine or book in the bathroom with me!

Well, i live on the bay side of the beach... on the water. We have a sreened in patio that faces the bay. So love to sit on the patio, listen to the fish/dolphins, and the water hit the seawall and read for hours sometimes. Plus there is a bar right down the road also on the water, so we can hear the music from there echo across the water. It is so peaceful. Nice way to unwinde after chasing a 17 month old all day.

Though most of my reading occur on the train/in the subway :P Aaand somtimes, when i read bricks (like under the dome) i read that one in bed and another book while commuting. Oh that one too. I go to a friend's place 2 times a years. She lives in another town, and we can spend all afternoon by her pool under her gazebo, reading a book and not even talk to each other all that time. We keep the talking for the late evening when her husband is in bed. He's not a reader, and so is my husband, so we like to share books and our impressions on them. She doesn't read SK though. She's more of a romance girl. But I like to read by her side. It's very relaxing. A vacation for me. :smile2:

I like to read in the bathtub when I am soaking in a Hollywood-style bubble bath with loads of bubbles. Not doing much of that lately because I have to wait at least six weeks after each tattoo to make sure my skin over the tattoo is back to full thickness. No soaking while it is still shiny. Other than that I will sometimes read while I am cooking, a wooden spoon in one hand and a copy of Lord Byron's Selected Poetry in the other.

I read in bed. I read on the couch. I read at the beach. I read waiting for the Doc. or Dentist. I used to read on the subway when I lived in Manhattan. I read and always carry a large book whenever traveling. They are great "accidental tourist", "conversation blockers". I guess anywhere and anytime when I do not have the opportunity to engage in some other activity, that I enjoy MORE. Peace, E.Freemantle AKA Beambounder

Hi, I don't know about anyone else (except for maybe Ubasti ) but while reading, I absolutely must have silence. And of all the possible places to read, the local coffee shop, restaurants, and a nearby Conoco, are the only conducive locales. There are far too many disruptions everywhere else.

I can and do read anywhere, but mostly in bed. I don't watch sports so I read. I do agree with E.Freemantle it is a conversation blocker too, even at home! If my nose is in a book, leave me alone I probably won't hear you anyway! I block out all sound when reading, I can't read in perfect silence every little noise is distracting. If I start off with noise I can tune it out and only hear what I want if I want.

I read on the toilet, on the sofa, on the stools in my kitchen, at the dining room table, on my mattress, on the floor, on the porch, under the dining room table, in closets, sitting on counters, and standing in various places. If I could I would love to read on a beach, but the beaches of Erie are pretty gross (along with the lake itself). I went in that lake a few times and lost my favorite misfits t-shirt. I had it for several years. :(
