I read a story about 20 years ago or so. I am sure it was a Stephen King short story.
In the story a man and his son are going to take a long space trip. They must be unconscious during the trip. If they remain conscious they will be stuck for thousands of years of consciousness even though the trip only takes a few seconds. The mans son does not take the sedative and when they arrive, the son is insane.
