The Cut Version

I was wondering if it's imperative that I read the cut version? I've been flirting with the idea of adding it to my Stephen King collection (have to have everything!), but wasn't sure if I needed to read it, or not?

I would add it to your collection, and I think reading it would give you lots of insights about how much was really cut. This also would give you a deeper appreciation of the Uncut version for sure.

Much as I loved the original (cut) at the time, the Uncut blows it away IMO.

There is nothing wrong with adding the Cut version to your book collection if you have the room on your shelf. Heck, I wouldn't mind finding it (I only have the Uncut). Especially given that I'm assuming the only version still in print is the Uncut, meaning you could probably find the Cut copy for a few bucks used somewhere.

However, unless there is material in the Cut version that was actually removed from the final copy (AFAIK there isn't any), then there is little point reading the Cut version ahead of the Uncut. Especially when SK himself prefers the Uncut!

I found a 1988 printing (the last one before the "directors" cut) of the 1978 version last year at a local used bookstore. I paid five dollars for it. Pricey, but I liked having it for comparison. It's a fascinating look at how stories change. For example in the 1978 edition The Kid (yuch) became a cigar smoking old man who was something of a pervert who tried to have his way with Trashcan Man, but failed in his endeavor. Instead of wolves he died from a stroke/heart attack I believe. Also characters have different names and there are some subtle changes made to sequences. I guess it appealed to my love of trivia. I'm one of those guys who will buy the DVD with both the directors cut and the theatrical release version. I'mm watch them back to back just to compare.
