gonna be taking a plane ride end of the month so i figured to brush up on air travel by reading the langoliers. anyway, thought it was a hoot that one of the ten is robert jenkins, the mystery writer.
these two guys, jenkins and lahaye, co-wrote a series of stories based on revelation (from the bible). so, anyway, i guess that is where maybe this jenkins character got the idea for how the left behind series starts, w/a bunch of folk disappearing (they call it the rapture i guess) (interesting word, rapture) from all over, airplanes included.
i don't imagine i'll disappear on my plane flight, but that could happen.:eyebrow:

sure. pourqois pas? it? like a thief in the night? i recall reading something in james, some sort of admonishment about not knowing what will happen tomorrow, something about being a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

sure. pourqois pas? it? like a thief in the night? i recall reading something in james, some sort of admonishment about not knowing what will happen tomorrow, something about being a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. The majority of people I talk to who believe in Jesus Christ show a flagrant disregard for eternal damnation. That's the people that believe in Jesus Christ. The people that don't believe in Him I expect to have a cavalier attitude about the lake of fire and burning for all eternity. Then there are the 39,000 different denominations that twist the original message of the bible because they don't like what it says. Some are in direct defiance of the message that is found to exist in every historical bible they've found to date.
A huge number of people that claim to be Atheistic or Agnostic quote scientific evidence of this or that, none of which they have found to be true for themselves but relying on mans' work. A number of them I've found are mad at God and have gone that direction in anger. The people that get angry at me almost always yell things from the bible at me. Clearly someone that has known God, didn't get what they wanted and now have stomped off to their room and slammed the door on God.
Talk to someone in the street that claims to believe in God and they will still say things like, "I try to be nice to people" in response to the question of whether or not they're going to heaven when they die. These people might as well be Atheists as far as Jesus Christ is concerned.
"If ye love me, keep my commandments.(John 14:15) That seems pretty self explanitory but it's not. I've known people to say I follow the 10 commandments and that's it. They don't read the bible or even concern themselves with the New Testiment. There is more to Jesus Christ than the 10 commandments. First of all, Moses brought those to us, not Jesus. Jesus made a lot of commandments during his 3 year ministry on earth. He also asked for us to keep His words (John 14:23). That goes beyond His commandments to everything He said. All commandments, all statutes all precepts all laws.
Those that don't do what He askes are subject to eternal consequences. They are only commandments if you accept Him. You have free will. But even accepting Him, even believing in Him, you can go straight to hell. It's well documented that even doing things in the name of Jesus is not enough, you have to be in His will and to be in His will you have to read His word:
Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."
Matthew 7:22 "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?"
Matthew 25:11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us."
Luke 6:46 "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?"
Luke 13:25"When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:"
There are many warnings in the bible to stay on the righteous path. A path that narrows as one walks it. What God's grace covered when you were first saved, won't fly as you walk down that ever narrrowing path. But the miracle of it is, the more narrow the path, the easier your life becomes. Nothing that happens to you can phase you once you fully accept the will of God into your life. You can rest in Him and no matter what happens around you or to you, you know you're going to be fine.
I've tried a lot of other belief systems. Accepting Jesus Christ as my savior and becoming a student of His word is the only thing that has made any significant difference in my life. I've overcome things in just a year and a half that have plagued me for decades. From my health to the compassion of my heart. I love people where before, if someone shut me out I'd forget about them before they were finsihed shutting me out. I feel and regret the pain of others and learn from it each time I've caused it. That may not sound like much if you don't consider I enjoyed causing that pain just a little while ago.
If you've turned away from God, turn back to Him.
If you've never had a relationship with Jesus Christ, check to see if what I'm saying is true. Ask Him into your life.
It's very easy to ask Jesus into your life. Admit to Him that you are a sinner and ask Him to cleanse you of your sins. Ask Him to make Himself real to you. Pray and read His word. There is no substitute for prayer and reading the bible. Don't be too concerned about not understanding what you're reading at first. Pray for understanding and find a church that teaches the Gospel, that's what they're there for.
The Rapture is what this post was all about. What you've read relates directly to the Rapture. Jesus will come like a theif in the night to claim His Church (those who believe in Him and follow His word). People will dissapeer after a loud noise (2 Peter 3:10) "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." also 1 Thessalonians 5:2 .
We will meet him in the sky 1 Thessalonians 4:17 "Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."

Continued from previous post
The bible has continued on for some 3000 years (beginning with the Old Testament which was a complete work before the ministry of Jesus Christ). There is unarguable truth in it; do unto others as you would have them do unto you (Luke 6:31), e.t.c. There is no guile in the bible. It's soul purpose is to improve the lives of those who believe in it. And more than improve their lives, give added purpose to those lives on earth and protection of that life, from damnation, into eternity.
Life, in contrast to eternity, is very short.
"whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."( James 4:14)
E-ter·ni·ty (-tūrn-t)
n. pl. e·ter·ni·ties
1. Time without beginning or end; infinite time.
2. The state or quality of being eternal.
3.
a. The timeless state following death.
b. The afterlife; immortality.
4. A very long or seemingly endless time:
If you make the wrong choice, eternity is a long time to be wrong.

hi dr. fudd. i welcomed you to the mb! ain't that a hoot! you've been around since apr '06!
i was at hunter's point for a time. back in the day. the combat zone. thank you for the post. kinda off track, but what do you make of the phrase, blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves?
it is a truly humbling experience to have a prayer answered, not once, but twice. and blockhead that i am, failed to notice. what a putz! hey? i guess when the last ding-dong of doom has sounded and i find myself before the throne of God, if such a thing is even possible, i won't have much to say for myself. just as i am, all that i am.
i'm sorry for what i am. i believe. and experience has taught me well that the playground rule about the politics of exclusion does not end on the playground. we take it w/us all through life. even here.
i once asked a man, how could someone be happy in heaven when those one loved were not there w/you. everything will be made new. there'll be no tear-dimmed eye.
peace joy and love. :y:

You sound as though you've given up. There's more faith in admitting that you're struggling than thinking you've got it all together as some super Christian. Paul is a good example of this. He makes it pretty clear in Romans 7 that he struggled to not sin and trusted in God through Jesus Christ to bring him through it.
I'm going to consider, "blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves." While I do that, mull over, "Listen to a man preach long enough and he'll tell you his sins."
Heaven is inconceivable. There is no way you can think with your mind and wrap it around what will happen in heaven. Faith is trusting in those things unseen.
2 Corinthians 4:18 "Since we consider and look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are visible are temporal (brief and fleeting), but the things that are invisible are deathless and everlasting."
You can read this, you can get the concept but you can't understand the immensity of heaven from it. It's like explaining color to a blind man. Where we are is nothing compared to heaven. Time floats in eternity. It ends and then eternity begins for us. There is eternity for everyone, you just have to choose which eternity you want.

I started reading this story today and when I ran across that name Robert Jenkins and also a writer, I just stared at the page trying to figure out why that name was so familiar. Sai King wrote in a pretty nifty joke with this one .

when I went to Alaska last year I instantly thought of SK's book: The Langoliers. Not only did I travel by plane both ways (fr/ Tallahassee, FL), but I also had a grand mal seizure in Anchorage that night. Adventure & a half at that! :biggrin2:

This helped, too. I put the Bible down several times out of confusion. Now I know I must press on.

Hi,
Yeah, it IS cponfusing, being a collection of short stories written by many writers over a period of several thousand years, from the Sumerians to the Romans, and like all short story anthologies some are better than others.
Some are great, some are OK and some are clunkers.
But very well worth a read.
