I cant believe it's been 10 years that I read Bag of Bones. I just bought the old paperback from Barnes and Noble when I was out of town earlier today. I dont even remember much about what went on in the book. I used to have the book 10 years ago but I guess I must have sold the book at the usual family rummage sale.

Ironically, I just started reading this one today. Like you, it's been quite a few years since I've read it. It'll be nice to revisit the characters.

I posted the why somewhere else, but this book has parts that I'd stack up against any other "master" of the craft.

"The next time she spoke to me, I don't think she knew who she was talking to, or where she was. The next time she spoke to me, she was dying."

The first time I read that passage I slammed the book shut and started cussing.
C'mon folks, it just doesn't get better that this.

I haven't actually read Bag of Bones yet. I have it sitting on my bookshelf, along with other ones that I haven't read. Is it good (of course it's good, but is it one of the better ones?)

Oh, Fredo. Same thing happened here. I decided that I, a grown man, was entitled to a hissy fit. And so I had one.

It is one of my faves. I've read it twice and listened to the audioboook read by King.
He does a great job on it.
For me it was him breaking new ground and he set a mood at the beginning that never flagged. It may have been his first book for scribner, but I'm not sure.

I agree. It's one of King's better works!

I'm soo glad I'm not the only one who did so. I was just :wow: so shocked, saddened, angry. . . all these emotions just spilled out when I read that line. And I DID slam the book shut. I had to recover before continuing, lol. Such a fantastic book. To me, it was more than a book, though; it was an experience. I have yet to read a book that has captivated as much as Bag of Bones.

It can't be ten years, because I just bought it the other day and it was brand new! Man, does time start speeding up when you hit a certain age . . . thanks for helping me realize that I'm get old. :)

I'm waiting for some of the Dark Tower series before commencing them on advice that they are better read together.I am thinking Ill give Bag of Bones another go. Like URRUTIAP It is a very long time since I read this book and after everyone saying how they enjoyed the book Im ready to experience it all over again. I love going back to SKs work after many years. Some times it feels like opening a bottle of well matured wine and tasting it for the first time.

I love rereading, but to be honest Bag of Bones isn't in my To Do list anytime soon. Some of the more... violent scenes are pretty much burnt into my memory.

Yeah, he has a tendency to put lines in like that. This line you quoted and there was a line in "Wizards and Glass" that was similar just shoot straight through to your heart. You know what's coming but you just keep reading and hoping you're not right.

I too, read this book many many years ago. I just started the re-read a couple of days ago and although parts are familiar I can't remember how it ended. That's good it'll be a surprise all over again. I'm at the part where Mike just got to Sara laughs.

It's been like 10 years with me. Think after reading "Under The Dome" I might recap it, too.

Vehement agreement! I'm a huge audiobook fan and this one is my favorite in that medium - King did a splendid job. Bag of Bones is in my 'top three' favs, but all it takes is a mediocre/bad voice talent to steal some of the greatness of a story. I wish King had the time or inclination to audio all of his own works. You know an author knows where to put all the intended inflections and emphasis; he knows as no one else (however great the talent) how the story was intended to be told. By the way, does anyone have a complete list of those he does read? I knpow he reads LT's Theory of Pets, but are there more?

I just hope Stephen Lang never lands a 'King' job - ever. I just dislike his voice so much. While on the subject, a quiet, respectful mention of Frank Muller. He was an enormous talent.

I was reading this book, laying in the hospital bed the day after they removed a lemon size tumor from my head, and I had just gotten to the part where the little girl was almost hit by the van. Mom had the news on. On comes the breaking news that Stephen King had been hit by a van while he was out jogging... I dogeared the page, and put the book down... *shiver* I eventually finished the book. Years later I read somewhere that Bruce Willis was slated to produce and star in the movie. Did anyone else hear something similar?

Bruce Willis had the film option for a while but I don't know why he never produced it. Mick Garris currently has the film option rights.

Me too, haven't read it since its publication, and now I have a new HC in my hands and lucky me, my mind is a complete blank. About the only thing I'm remembering so far is that the place is called Sarah Laughed.

Its gonna be a great re-read.

I'm about to begin reading Bag of Bones. I've never read it, but I've listened to the audiobook read by King. I love it when he reads them himself!!! However, I really enjoyed listening to Hearts in Atlantis, which was read by Mr. King and William Hurt. They both gave me the shivers...

It's absolutely captivating, scary as hell, and one of my favorites.
