A little press for 'Salem's Lot-
I was sitting in the veterinarian's waiting room with a copy of Entertainment Weekly in which they list the 20 best vampires and interview vampire fiction writers.
When asked about scariest vampire book almost all of them said, you guessed it, Salem's Lot.
Except Stephanie Meyer who said she thought of vamps as pretty sparkly teenagers and only sex was scary -- or something like that.

Ugh. That's the unfortunate stereo-type nowadays. I'm thinking Stephanie Meyer hasn't read Salem's Lot. Actually, some of the vampires in the book are attractive too but not all the time, and they're certainly scary.

Maybe it is just me......I did not fing Salem's Lot very scary at all. I don't know if it was the mood I was in when I read it or what was going on in my life that altered how I read it....it simply was not scary at all for me.

Is that Weird ???

I didn't find it scary either. It was very riveting though.

It wasn't particularly scary, it still managed to give me one nightmare though. Just a great book.

If you don't find the book scary, Randomman watch the original mini series of Salemn's lot with DAvid soul as Ben and I think James mason as Barlow. it was vrey scary.

When the came out, it scared the ever lovin' crap outta me just the second I knew David Soul was even in it:laugh:.

Salem's Lot was the first book (of fiction) that made me hold my breath (I literally gasped when I realized it:blush:), and caused into question the wisdom of reading a book in the middle of the night, in the middle of the woods, the moon the yellow of stained old teeth, with the bedroom window wide open:eek2:...why yes, yes the term "hyper aware", does indeed describe it with some justice, now that I come to remember on it:biggrin2:.
It was the beginning of a whole new kind of fiction reading world for me:cool2:.

I didn't find myself scared when I was reading 'Salem's Lot; I thought it was more thrilling than scary, I found myself sitting up and gasping at several points and going 'no, no, no, no, don't do that!' - maybe that's just me being weird though!

I liked the book a lot. What scared me was not while I was reading it, but when I was reflecting on what I had read later on before bed time.

One of my all-time favorites. It's very atmospheric and gripping, with well written characters and it's also very scary at times.

So here I am, in Afghanistan reading my way through Stephen King's books. While I was reading 'salem's Lot I would go out at in the afternoon and watch the sun disappear behind the mountains. What would go through my head at that moment was, "Oh crap..." and a chill would creep down my back.

Good work!

Holy crap, this is THE scariest book I've ever read. Period. Of course, I read it while in junior high....I've never had a book literally scare me, before or after. This is truly one of his masterpieces!

This book scared me too. I read it when I would come in at night (while I was in high school) I swore I kept hearing scratching at my window (even though I was up all alone on the second floor!) Slept with the lights on a a bit ;)

This was a very good novel but I didn't form a bond with the characters like I did with other works.

I thought it was really creepy. I just finished listening to the audio book in the car and wondered how it could be done again today with the technology. It seems like it would be more difficult to cut one town off from the world without anyone really noticing.

I love the whole scary house thing!!! Always liked haunted houses. I think that made me even more interested in SL.

One of the reasons that I've re-read SL many times is that it is so SK. In that early book he had already established his unique style that is still in play today. Definitly in my top 5.:y:

Try the audio version. It was awesome and scary. More so than the book I think.

I read it in Junior High also. My mom had the paperback with the vamp on the cover with the eyes that followed you around the room and it was always sitting on the coffee table. It freaked me out. After the David Soul mini-series came out, I HAD to read it. I loved it!

I loved this one for its setting and atmosphere. That creepy house I could envision so well, the busy streets that became creepily quieter as the book continued, I loved the feel of it more than anything else. Not "scary," exactly, but a creep that made the book compulsively readable. Although the scene where the character goes into the school bus at night... THAT was scary. :-)

I haven't read this book in years, but when I did read it I found it to be one of those books you just can't put down. It didn't scare me though, I found it quite riveting though. I still have it on my nook account, I might just have to go back and read it again.

Love this book. Just had a reread recently. Wondering about the boy at the hospital who warns someone about Ann Norton in the hospital with a gun. When the man turns around the boy has gone. I thought first off that it would be Mark. But a little bit later when Father Callaghan is sitting on the bus waiting for the driver to return with his drink we read:

"He went on looking out the window. Across the street, a teenaged boy was sitting on a porch stoop with his head folded into his arms. Callahan watched him until the bus pulled out again, but the boy never moved."

Curious.

I remember reading this one during a thunderstorm (I was living in Albuquerque at the time-it was a doozy) and I was in the house alone. I was about 13 or so-my bed was in the corner of the room and I was hunkered into the corner as small as I could get but I wasn't putting that book down!!
