It is, and the characters are absolutely fantastic, aren't they? I was trapped in that hotel with then and I think it's one of Mr King's classics.

Have you read the alternative ending? Interesting if you like followups I think. I read the book several years ago, unputdownable,I read it in one sitting in a remote country cottage, alone! So claustraphobic but I think a work of genius.

I came across a book containing 'The Shining' 'Misery' and Carrie in the same volume. A freind has borrowed the book and Im having difficulty getting in touch. I will post the source of the alternative ending in the next few days.

The Shining is one of my all time favourite SKs. I thought it was a lot creepier and wierder than a lot of his books. The character of Jack Torrence is also a lot more messed up than other characters.

In SK's talk he said that The Shining was his "worst" book, that he felt like he was in control of the world's biggest bulldozer and that he only scratched the surface. I was in the audience and I had brought along my copy of The Shining [just in case, you know, there was a way to get an autograph, the boyscout motto and all] and I wanted to jump up and shout "I loved it, Stephen!" But of course I didn't because then I would have been thrown out and I couldn't miss the rest of the talk...
He also said Rose Madder was a disappointment to him...He said it should've worked, but somehow didn't. I still beg to differ. He was being way too hard on himself.

Hey, I never heard of an alternative ending either! I can't decide if I'd want to read that or not. The Shining was my first King book, about 30 years ago, and it scared the crap out of me.

The Shining was definitely one of Mr. King's best works. No one could have written a story like that better. I love the adrenaline pumping books he writes and the movies that have been produced from some of his other books/stories. Anybody who writes something thinks it is awful, I know that I thought my short story for my English class last year was terrible, but I had fun writing it, and that is all that matters, but everyone else loved it....:smile2:

I gotta say, out of all the Kings I've read this one has got to be my favourite. Awesome stuff.

There is an alternate ending? I must find this!
I just finished reading this book today. I read it obsessively for about three days. It made me a bit jumpy. Like last night, I was reading it and all of the sudden, the phone rang and I just about had a heart attack.
I had already seen the movie, but I think the book was a lot more developed. Jack seemed more like a person, rather than a maniac. I think one of my favourite parts is when he comes out of the trance briefly to tell Danny he loves him and to get out. It nearly cried right there on campus in front of everyone. I managed to hold it in, though.
It was quite a good book.

Alternate ending? Where might we find that one? I truly enjoyed this book! I love the movie too, but for different reasons, it's campy horror stuff that does scare me. But this book has all the raw emotions that makes the Constant Reader feel-sadness, anger, love, fear. I especially love the father-son relationship. When Wendy was remembering how Danny was his father's son right from the beginning, you see how much Jack loved his son. It made me feel so emotional. Also, when Jack was remembering his own father, how much he had loved him yet later hated him, having to deal with an overbearing, alcoholic, abusive father reminded me of my childhood, being raised by someone like that, you always afraid of an outburst for no reason. Jack also did not want to be a father like his own was, it was the Hotel that was making him that way, I think. King did an excellent job w/this book. One of his absolute best!

I hate to disagree with Mr. King, but The Shining is an incredibly good read, top notch. I would love to read a sequel to that one.

That is outstanding news! Thank you. I'm counting down the days till Dallas. It's actually close to my home state and I'm not going to miss an opportunity to see the master. I'm hoping to score a reception ticket when they go on sale next Wednesday.

I haven't yet read one of Stephen's books that I didn't enjoy and I've read loads of them, but I think the Shining is my favourite so far. Although Stanley Kubric was a genius, I thought the book was so much better. The hotel feels like a character rather than just a building and I felt that Jack was basically a good man, driven insane by the hotel. Sure he had a temper but he had controlled it because of his basic decency. In the movie, you get the impression he's been crazy all along, but I guess that's Jack Nicholson for you! In short, loved it!
