Can someone give me reason to finish this book (without spoiling it for me). I've had it for years and never picked it up till now, I'm about 60 pages in and I just cannot get into it. Normally by time im 60 pages in to a Stephen King novel I don't want to do anything else untill it's finished, but this one just isn't doing it for me... had the same problem with Lisey's Story. I have read 95% of King's work, and these are the only 2 books that i've had this problem with.

You paid money to buy it!
As a Scotsman, that's all the reason I would need! :wink2:

Unless you just really need to finish off his current collection of novels, letting "Gerald's Game" stay on the shelf won't hurt. "Lisey's Story," though, is a must. I'd never recommend it to a first-time Kinger, but you're not one of those...suspend your disbelief and slowly wade in, the water is quite pleasant.

Its not very long but it gets much better later on. Then slows down alot at the end. But the bulk of the book is really good. keep trucking away at it. You wont be dissapointed

have you read it yet? here's a reason to read it: imagine yourself in a situation where you are stuck. having read gerald's game, you are inspired to free yourself, thus saving your life. if you don't read it, you remain stuck there, maybe the pay phone hidden in the corner of the airport terminal up in numchuck, alaska, yeah, sure, it grabbed your finger whilst you probed for errant quarters, and the local fauna isn't about to help, something about the cahoolawasee river they want to immitate, or something. :y:

If it helps you get into this book I'm willing to share my experiences with Geralds Game! I first read it as a late teen and couldn't believe how it stoked my imagination....to the point where when she considers her last option for escape and puts it into action...when I finished that chapter and sat to think about it my visual imagination kicked in and I found myself passed out on the floor...until recently I had dismissed the incident but upon reading the book for a second time...and fainting for a second time (no not a medical condition..lol...bout 12yrs between reads!)...be patient...live the character as she is written...get in her mind with King...and keep a soft spot to land on close by....enjoy!

Shirley you must be joking! Passing out after reading a passage? Hmmmm.
Oh and finish Gerald's Game, you cannot call yourself a King fan if you don't! lol I thought it was one of his creepier ones!:oo:

If u have not finished it I recommend it. I dont consider King's books that gruesome. To me they just eat at everyday fears and what ifs. King makes the what ifs come true. So I am not easily grossed out but to this day when I think of King books that grossed me out Gerald's Game is it.

read this one in a sitting today. Liked it, but not as much as my other favorites as 'salems lot or Christine.

Yeah, just finished this one last night, everything everyone is saying is true; I was captivated by the imagery of this book, and the idea of the eclipse was really awesome
but I was like you, at first it was slow going on this book, couldn't get that much into it, but once I got going I was eager to read more and more into this dark story

While this one wasn't one of my favorites, I have to admit it was better than I expected it to be. It does take a while for the story to get rolling, but once it does, you know you're in for a ride. The ending alone is worth reading the rest of the book for - at least that was the case for me.

It's a really good book, but it takes awhile to get rolling because there is very complicated past of Jessies's that you need to know about or the rest won't make sense later.

I read this book as a teen and recently reread it and it still holds up - it creeped me out and left me thiinking about it for days after. It's worth it to hang in there and read it through.

This is a title I would like to forget, but it's there. When I bought it a few months ago, I started to realize that it reminded me more and more of a Tales from the Crypt I saw in the 90s about a bunch of loggers and their gruesome incident in the forest, so that sustained me. I also see that it came out around the same time as the book (interesting.) If you like King's excellent use of phrases to draw a plot together, this book is for you. It shows his mastery of the English language. There were things I did not expect (were not in Tales from the Crypt) and surprised me, besides wanting to find out about various hangers.

I enjoyed it a lot (especially when it gets rolling), but I wouldn't call it one of his best. Still a great ride, though.

I have had quite a few moments on several of his books, but with this one, I didn't seem to have any trouble at all. This is definitely a MUST read on the SK list!! Just get through it. Be a trooper. Trust me, in the end, you will be GLAD you got over the hump!
(I hope you read Dolores Claiborne first though)

I read Gerald's Game first. And I'm currently reading Dolores Claiborne. Is there a problem with that? Will I miss something?

I hope that you went ahead and finished the book. If not, I can only think of one good reason to finish it, (without spoiling anything), the first time I read this book, it scared me so bad that i slept with lights on for a week!! Every noise outside my windows made me curse myself for reading it.

I don't believe in fighting with books. Put it aside and try it again in a year or two. It won't go bad you know... :laugh:And personally I enjoyed the book. If you liked Dolores Claiborn the book offers some interesting connections and the ending's great. That's all I can say without Ms. Mod sticking a spoiler button on me...

You have to find out how she gts out and what she does after. As well, she does change her attitude on a certain event in her childhood. You will be glad you slugged it out. Liseys Story is a bit hard and you do have to be willing to suspend belief for a while. That is why I think I liked it so much. It forced me to let go of the world for a while.

For me the book was like a bad accident. No matter how freaky it got, I couldn't put it down, even though I knew I should. Keep reading, it is intriguing in a shameful way. I read it in two days.

I'm also only 60 pages in, and keep on putting it down. It seems like nothing exciting is happening.
Maybe it'll get more exciting later on. I hope so.

I just finished this book and although it definitely doesn't rank with my favorite books of SK's, I still found it to be a good read. I liked it more than Carrie which I find to be my least favorite of his books.

This is one of those polarizing novels: people either really love it or they hate it. For me I worked at this book like a champ but in the end I had to admit defeat somewhere around page 156. Perhaps contrary to the opinions of others I found the development of the scenario (i.e. how she gets stranded) the most compelling part. Once it started getting into her background story I started to get bored. Maybe even more ironic than that is -- if memory serves me correctly -- this book has links to Dolores Claiborne, which is one of my favorites, and yet references to it were hardly enough to inspire me to persevere.
In other words, you know what you like and what you don't. If you've given it a valiant shot and came up short, who cares, it's not like there isn't nearly a trillion other SK books for you to embrace. Moreover, not even SK loves all his books.

I just finished a re-read of this one and was struck by the same thing the second time around as I was the first. I've always felt that Mr. King's strongest suit as a writer is his ability to draw compelling believable characters that help us to accept the often bizarre circumstances we find them in. My biggest problem with Gerald's Game is that it simply doesn't have any characters in it. We get the barest glimpse of Gerald himself and brief sketches of Jessie's family, but there really isn't a great deal of development and I just don't find Jessie, herself, particularly sympathetic. She's clearly got what I like to think of as Fran Goldsmith Syndrome. This is a fairly common human affliction that leads certain types of people to believe -- despite any and all evidence to the contrary -- that the entire known universe and all it encompasses spins on the axis of their own personal whimsy. I found the "squeaky wheel" simile a very apt descriptive of Mrs. Mahout's girl, Jessie, and found it very difficult to generate any sympathy for her at all.

Just finished it myself and all i can say is WOW! I did try to read it when i was younger and had trouble but give it a chance i did and i was greatly rewarded. It made me cringe cry and so many other emotions i just cant even say. This was for me definately one of the creepiest and most vividly detailed of his books. It still wows me how much dementedness can come from one mans mind. This is definitely one of the best King journeys just give yourself the time to get there!

And that ladies and gentlemen is all the proof i need to show how incredibly vivid this painting king painted for me really is! :p

I think what creeped out my fiance the most was not only the faces I was making, but during the part when she has to slice through her hand, I kept flailing my own hand around in the air out of sheer discomfort.

I read this in one sitting. Sustaining a story that basically uses one character has to be a difficult thing for a writer to do, but in my opinion, Mr. King outdid himself here. I don't think you'll regret sticking with it.

finish this book! i had the same problem as you, i couldn't get into it in the beginning & i had to put it down for a fews years! but i found it in a box of old papers & thought i would like to finish to see what the ending was like...i was so not disappointed! i should've known that SK would not let me down in failing to deliver something that's creeped me out so much that i think i've rediscovered my fear of the dark again!! keep going, just try to think about jessie & if she ever gets free or just ends up dying there in that cabin!:eek2:

i think it is well worth finishing ... this is one of the lesser known of mr king's work it seems ... it doesn't get mentioned very often but i think it packs a punch ... it's on my short list of rereads actually ... there's that little group of books in the 90s that weren't very long but i thought were very good ... Gerald's Game, Rose Madder, and Delores Claibourne (obviously the latter gets mentioned often)... all short by typical king-size but three very good page turners i thought ... two are a bit forgotten ...
so finish it ... i'm surprised it didn't grab you quicker tho =\

Gerald's Game, in my mind, has one of the best and creepiest endings of any King novel. Do yourself a favor and finish it!
