This is the movie I've seen the most, being an insomniac. My question: why only show it at 3am? Rats give everyone the willies, right?:eek2:

I haven't seen the movie, but I'm not a huge rat fan.
The domestic ones are ok but that's it. I don't like feral rats at all.
Dead ones are the worse though, my sister's dog brought me one last winter.
It was early and I hadn't put on my glasses yet and I thought she was bringing me a big gray wool sock. Imagine my screams as bent down to grab it. I didn't know I could jump that high in the morning before coffee either.

I've never seen the film. I haven't read very good reviews of it. Would you recommend it?
I liked the short story. And I have a pet rat. So...

I liked the short story....
To me, it isn't really any worse than some of the "lesser" Stephen King movie adaptations.
I'd say it is worth renting. But if you decided to buy it (either new or used) and pay more than $5-6, you're going to be awfully disappointed.
The film isn't too far removed from the short story. It uses quite a few of the same character names you read in the story, like the mill workers, though their personalities aren't identical to the book.
Also there is less of a focus on the large number of rats, because this is basically a monster movie with a large, unseen monster that kills off the mill workers one by one.
Nothing at all in the way of character development.
But there are some positives.....
1. Brad Dourif's exterminator character is the most interesting one in the movie and the scenes where he is onscreen tend to be the better ones in the movie. He isn't developed all that much but there is an amusing scene in which the foreman blackmails him into doing a dangerous job. And Dourif also has a scene where he gives a pretty chilling speech about his time in Vietnam (where he encountered huge rats).
2. It is bland 1980's American horror, as opposed to bland Asian style horror, bland comedy-horror, bland torture horror or bland "virus" horror. Basically you're getting a type of movie that isn't made anymore.
3. The setting in the mill's basement and deeper underground is genuinely creepy.

I'm scared to death of rats. After I saw this movie, I was even scared of a little mouse. I hear noises in my kitchen for a long time. under the sink.

I actually didn't mind this movie. Usually the adaptions from Night Shift aren't that great, but this one was decent.

I actually really enjoyed this movie. I saw it on a cable channel way back in the 90s, and then bought it on DVD two years ago. I watch it a lot.

I remember this movie from when it was first released and then I saw it several times afterward. I used to work in a dangerous old mill (which, a few years after I'd left and moved back across country, exploded from a methane buildup and a couple of men were killed...no wonder, with the conditions and the attitude of "management" there.) That's why I really connected with the story and always loved the part when the boss was told by the workers that he should go down with them to investigate the cause of the murders. I think the line was that management should be represented too. Just desserts I'd say! So, I've always enjoyed this one, rats and all!

BEN, now that was one seriously kickin' rat.
Those flicks (Willard & the sequel Ben if your not familiar) kinda made me all misty, even as a young impressionable wannabe tough guy, and now I find myself usually rootin' for the rodent:oo:
Yeah well, so what if Ben had a bit of a control freak problem, he was the king telepathic rat after all (not to mention, you know, A RAT), and that's gotta make ya feel like a bit of a big cheese (yeah yeah I know, but that was two, count 'em two groaners in one...even cheesy one might say..Oh Bam, a triple groaner for the price of one and that ain't easy:blush:...okay, I'll shut my trap..POW!!!..and he goes for the cycle:laugh:!).
Ben was quite a giant feather in a certain young pre-wacky Mikey Jackson's cap too...

I seen it only in the theater, but I remember it being junk food fun, and that Brad Dourif ws hilarious. Also, wasn't Remo Williams (Fred Ward) in this one?
I find it weird that my friend's mother and the used book store down the street both have wooden coffins which were used in the film.

The opening scene gave me false hope that this movie would be watchable, but I just couldn't do it. The acting was just so WOODEN. I'd rather read it on paper.

Sometimes wooden acting gets to me, and sometimes it is just right for the script.
This was a good fit of acting and script, and allows me to rewatch it.

I haven`t seen that movie yet, rats give me the creeps ever since I watched another horror movie that had monstrous rats (and which I have totally forgotten the name) when I was 11. However, I guess it's the same kind of thing from the trailer, and from what can be seen around the Web.
Note: Most of you are horror fans, anyone has seen the movie I was talking about? It happened in an asylum of some kind, and the rats had a hunger for blood and flesh, and there was also a giant rat leading them... in any case, I`ll always be creeped out by rats after seeing that movie and Night Shift (if I can find it of course).

Hey Every1,
I have seen the movie Graveyard Shift several times. I liked this film even though the critics didn't, I thought it was a little creepy with the rats; but they don't scare me like they do some people. I get creeped out by bugs, not the small 1's either. I'm talking about bugs like the 1's in Texas, big huge centipeds, cockroaches, anything that's big, creepy, and has a lot of legs, those movies creep me out. I'll tell U the truth any business that has that many rats in it would be condemed no matter how much money crossed hands. Even though it wasn't one of his best films it is creepy and 4 those that can't stand rats; it's a must C.

It was an okay horror movie. I wouuldn't say that it was bad. It just wasn't great. I think any movie based off a short story isn't going to be a masterpiece of horror. Graveyard Shift in my opinion is one of those movies that you can watch again and again, mainly because it's an entertaining horror movie.

It was ok.Willard and Douriff were best parts of the movie.Special effects were lousy, but then again it was pretty low-budget.

Hello All:smile2:,
I really liked this movie, even though it got a poor review from the critics; but what do they know. I have seen 5 star movies that have sucked. I thought Graveyard Shift was a little creepy, rats can give U that creep factor; but bugs R the worst i.e. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. What did you all like or dislike about the film?

Hey All,
I agree with a couple of readers, usually Stephen King's short stories do not make great movies. I also thought that Dourif was the best in the movie, but other than that I could take it or leave it. I did enjoy Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes shorts on DVD, did anyone else feel the same.

Personally, I felt the movie was true-to-form insomuch as it did reflect the short story fairly well. The only complaint I would have about this movie was the choppy form of the relationship between the man and the woman -- pretty cheap here, looks like the director didn't care too much for lovers in this story. And, to be honest, I can understand if that were the case. I think a better direction would have been to make the giant rat much more terrifying in appearance and given it more screen time. The guy who played the exterminator -- been a long while since I've seen the movie -- was a great actor choice, though:)
