if so, it is perfectly logical motivation to read The Bible in its entirety if I finish the Stand. And that is pretty cool too.

Hi,
Don't know if it is or not but it's certainly better written than most parts of the anthology of short stories which comprise the Bible.
Having said that, I'd recommend reading the Bible in its entirety to anyone, I've done that several times.

I thought about that too! The Bible isn't just a straight story though there's alot of things to think about and interpret. I think the Bible needs to be studied and if you're Christian lived by. You probably won't get much as much from it by reading it as a straight story. If getting some enlightment is your goal.

I would say that the bible is definately 'thicker' than The Stand. :biggrin2:

The Bible would be much thicker than The Stand if they were printed with the same kind of paper. Most Bibles are printed on extremely thin paper or else they would be too large to carry around.
The Stand is a great book but The Bible is in a class by itself and will be until the end of time.

The Bible is vastly overrated, IMO, but was certainly ahead of its time when it was written.
I reckon that in a thousand years, The Stand will be recognised as the finer work of the two.

Hi,
The Bible was written over the period of about 2500+ years, from beginning to end.
I agree, The Stand more cohesion, better plot structure and characterisation IMO.
To say nothing of Dark Tower.

Either way, the bible is a good read and probably the greatest piece of literature this world has ever seen. The most life changing for sure.

Hi,
Thought we'd better have this in here.
I must admit that, mistranslations and all, the translators that worked on the King James (1st of Britain, 6th of Scotland) had a great post-Elizabethan feel to it, done as it was just after Shakespeare, Marlowe and Jonson were writing and George Chapman had first translated Homer, wrote beautifully crafted English (in most cases, many different translators worked on it).
And of course it's been edited, with varying successes and agendas, often by committee, several times.

I don't know if it's thicker, but it's definitely denser.

It's not thicker than the bible, and I find the Christian references quite uneducated, as the Old Testament (Isn't that how Christians call it?) is in fact "The Bible" for us Jewish people, and as such it has pretty good narrative, excellent story lines and deep understanding of the human character - including the ugly parts, you just need to learn how to read it.
The remarks here regarding the bible's "lack of style or story telling abilities" come mainly from ignorance I think, and I supposed that none of the commentators actually read it in Hebrew - the original language of the book.
Don't mean to sound stuck up, but dissing something you know so little about, is really bad taste in my opinion.

But all that means nothing about the book by the way - I absolutely LOVE IT.

I agree being a Christian that a few things said on here were out of plain ignorance. People may not be Christian/Jewish or whatever, but that doesn't mean they should bash the beliefs of others.
I have actually read the Old Testament several times, and parts of the New Testament and Revelations. I never read the whole New Testament because it is the same story told from different perspectives. However Revelations scare the crap out of me.
As for comparing the Bible to the Stand, the Bible is definitely thicker and is actually in some ways a historical text and others faith based. The Stand is a beautiful fictional novel, but can no way be compared to The Bible.

Sorry Michal...I meant the Christian Bible...New and Old Testaments. I suggest you read the New Testament also whether you believe in it or not because the gospels are one of the greatest stories ever (Acts of the Apostles included)

I read parts of it and will now promptly go and read the rest :biggrin2:!
And I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to sound condescending or anything...

I would rather have The Stand in my bedside table drawer.
And would find it strangely more comforting if The Stand came true rather than the Bible :oo:
But i agree, the Bible would be much thicker and will probably be around for the next 2000 years, unfortunately (IMO).

I am not sure whether it has greater width, but in many respects I believe that The Stand is a far more viable and often more inspiring than many of the tales of the bible..also are we talking old and new testament?

I agree being a Christian that a few things said on here were out of plain ignorance. People may not be Christian/Jewish or whatever, but that doesn't mean they should bash the beliefs of others.
Being an avid reader of the bible myself and an all around lover of truth, people bashing the beliefs of others is what the bible is all about. Look for it, expect it, and as Jesus says over and over again in so many ways, John 15:18 "If the world hates you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you."
Prepare for such bashing to the point where you could lose your life for reading about or so much as mentioning Jesus Christ or the bible. It's not happening everywhere, but you know it happens in this world. Besides, Jesus Christ came to bash religion because the Pharisees were practicing a twisting of God's word. They were very religous, and very wrong if you believe the New Testament.
As far as whether or not one is thicker than the other, it depends, I've seen some pretty thick bibles that occupy their own table stands.
My personal feeling is: The bible will save me. The Stand can only entertain me and entertain me it did. I only read the Stand once, only death will stop me from reading the bible over and over again.
