Stephen King, in the introduction to Night Shift, says a horror writer is almost always at the terminal joining the rational world and the symbolic unconsciousness ... .
I thought about symbols in writing and the one that came to mind is the lamp with the green lozenge-shaped shade in 1408. I've always found places with those lamps are off by a few eerie degrees.
The lamp gives off a weird radiance saying look at me. I'm an icon of ... oh; you don't know? Well, then, you'll just have to figure it out won't you.
It can't even do an adequate job of giving off light. So, why the attitude? I think the lamp uses a glamour of authority to mask its dark intent.
I wondered what symbols, in real life or novels, strike a chord with everyone else.
What's your version of the green lozenge lamp?
