View Full Version : History of the SKMB?

I'm really interested in learning more about the SKMB. When it was created and who the original and first members were (I've got a couple ideas about this based on the Prolific member status) to sign up.

If anyone would like to share some history or funny stories about the Board from "way back when," that would be great!

Anni..... remember trying to "stay on topic" . Who was it that spilled the yellow paint on their carpet and we kept talking about the Green Mile as suggestions were made to clean it up?

Uh...that yellow paint on the carpet was me.

And yes, I admit it. I couldn't stay on topic if my life depended on it.

Remember when you logged into the main page and it asked you if you wanted the New MB, the Old MB, or the Old, old MB? I can't find that page now. Is it gone? Deleted?:oo: Why wasn't I informed? :biggrin2:
There were some pretty funny things on there.
And by the way, Perse, these posts count numbers are just our posts from the NEW MB. Our old post count wasn't carried over, we had to start back at one. (Even those who didn't change User names )

Wow, so it's possible that the people who are close to or over 1,000 posts (by thousands!) probably had that many before? Wow! Who has the most posts to date do you think? Mr. John D.?

This is the fourth(?--even I've lost count) version of a message board for the stephenking.com site. The first one was not a threaded board so was a bit disorganized which didn't help anyone for staying on topic. :smile2: Many of you who were with us from the beginning will remember my frequent response of See the FAQ which lead to Stephen's version of Read the FAQ, Dammit!! We then went to a threaded board but it didn't have all the bells and whistles that this version does. All of the versions have been moderated and posts have to be read/approved before they go live. If we'd had the post count from the first versions of the Board, there would be a lot more prolific members and possibly some Uber members (over 100,000 posts)

Dana Jean

I know for a fact I would be Uber.

I'm Uber right now in many other ways--and geez, I don't think any of them are good.

I have a notebook of posts from back then. It was really hard to follow conversations on that first message board, as there was one thread only--so to speak--and a question could be asked and it wouldn't get answered or even talked about for 100 posts. So, I copied things so I could keep track, because, I actually like to carry on conversations sometimes. I do have my kamikaze moments where I swoop in and bomb some thread with a post, but generally, I'm a yakker.

Anyway, I would copy stuff so I could keep up on what was going on. I don't have to do that anymore thank goodness, but I'll try to dig that old stuff out and stimulate some memories.:smile2: I can remember it was really fun when Marsha was caught up to real-time posting and then we would be able to sort of have a conversation. And always off topic!

Also, Marsha was very quiet back then. She very rarely made any kind of personal post. Generally, she would just give a quick reply if she gave one at all, but she didn't play too much. We worked on her for a long time and got her laughing with us and that's been great fun! it always made me smile when I could get her to open up and laugh!

Here is a post I made to Marsha long ago when she was having a rough time with the board--there had been a hint that Marsha played favorites and we were a gang and not accepting of new people.

I wrote to her:

With every "See FAQ" to each "Stephen doesn't autograph books through the mail," you tediously have to type -- I've felt your pain.

Every time you've been accused of being the leader of a clique-ish, vicious gang --I've heard your cries.

You ask,

"'Where were you Dana Jean, when I needed you most? I was alone and saw only one row of typing.'" And I say back to you,

"'Marsha--there was only one set of typing, because that's when I was e-carrying you.'"

Such moving words. Makes your eyes leak, don't it?

Dana Jean, I thought I was the only one to keep a notepad near the computer. I would write down the post number- and remember we had to put that in the reply so we knew who we were talking to- no quote back then:oh: no threads. Just one big long page of post after post.
Yes, indeed, MsMod was quiet back then. A few "topics" did bring her lighter side out.

I used to count how many time MsMod wrote- see FAQ in one day.:smile2: But she always kept us in tack- MsMod's little Angels.

Oh yes, that old MB was a right PITA both for Marsha (Ms. Mod) and for us. No threads made for mass confusion, as Dana Jean notes. You'd ask something or comment and not see a reply for many, many posts. I got a bit impatient at first but Flake took my hand (in a cyber sense) and guided me into the club.

Then I was asked to be a Beta tester for a new MB. Well yes, I was honored. Why me? But who am I to question Marsha's innate wisdom in her choice? ;)

We Beta testers have been accused of being a clique, of acting superior, of being Mod's Little Angels™. But we're just very, very lucky folks.

Stephen's web site first launched in late 1998 but we only had an email contact system. We were quickly inundated with emails so in the spring of 1999 set up a guestbook for people to leave messages which evolved into a message board but I have no way of finding out who the first 5 members were without doing many hours of research and chances are it would be an exercise in futility as the company that first hosted the web site is no longer in business.

Now that we can't go back to look through the old MB, are they lost in the blue nowhere?
Perse, they are stories that were written by members who asked to be included in writing it. I think there were just so many spaces, so people were picked at random. (Another cause for a drama situation I remember...) Then each one would write a paragraph or two, following the story from the previous poster. You'll see when we do it again this year (hopefully..).

Well, most of it is truly great - but there is just one job that we all try to fob off on one another... toenails. We all HATE Toenail Trimming Day. It would be okay if we were allowed to use clippers, but, this years budget didn't allow for them. (Buy more books, people!)

Hi,

Well, there was the get-together in London last May, when Kim and her husband, Marianne, and I met up with Ms Mod, Robin Furth and Philippa (SK's UK editor), and you should be able to find the story of that (with pics) by searching CT for 'London From My Eyes'.

And there were some great stories from the Three Kings event last year too, probably in GD?

From my own perspective, I can give a little history.

First of all, I joined the board many years ago but was not active until I decided to start a fan site of my own. I thought it would be a good idea to join this wonderful community so that we could all find ways to get the word out on King. But not only that, to make sure his die hard fans could always communicate with each other.

I found in all my internet travels that SK's fans are among the most kind and giving than any I have ever seen out here and I've been doing this a long time.

The history of the SKMB is about love and community and this board shows that in every nook and cranny. Take a weekend and read the place, you'll see what I mean.

"It was a dark & stormy night... Mick & the boys were cranking out "19th Nervous Breakdown" through the quad woofers of Stephen's office loo stereo system. Toilet brush in hand, Pine-Sol at the ready, I snuck past the open door hoping to avoid Tabbitha's steely gaze. (She disagrees with this whole Beta Tester/Uncle Steve relationship!) I could see the light beaming off the bathroom mirror & hear Keith Richard's riffs reverberating off the Italian tile. A pile of crumpled Charmin lay discarded between the newly manicured toes of The Master. "Hey Beta Boy! Steve cooed, I've been expecting you!"
TBlack fled across the bathroom floor... The scent of pine followed!

Okay, I ran into more of my papers regarding the old, old, old board. I'll just sprinkle some of the things we talked about.

I had asked way back when, if Stephen had ever had contact with someone in prison (for research) purposes. At the time, Mod said no, but apparently there was someone on death row who wrote and asked to be told the ending of The Dark Tower series before they were put to death. The office did not follow up on this, and there was no contact. I then wrote and said, "if I'm ever on my deathbed or (death row) and I managed to get to a computer to tell you I was dying, my final request would be to find out how The Plant ends," I told Marsha to flat out lie to me and make something up so I would die in peace. I then told her to file my request from 2004 in her special Deathbed Compensation file so she wouldn't forget.

It's still there, right M?:eyebrow::laugh:

I also asked if the Rock Bottom Remainders had been on the cover of "The Rolling Stone." And then I went on to discuss the Dave Matthew poop dumping incident. A cautionary tale for sure. I advised that the RBR should be vigilant with their excrement and do no indiscriminate dumping as it would be a very horrifying day on eBay when Dave Barry or Stephen King stool was up for sale.

I also asked what Stephen felt about being linked--somehow--with every spooky or horrifying event that took place in this world. I mean, the Stephen King references are so old and tired, you think, "wow, you guys are so clever--Stephen King--I would have never thought of that! And you get paid what? for that electrifying brainiac power?

I also asked if he got paid whenever they referenced him as an integral part of a storyline (I was watching a City Confidential at the time about a doctor's murder in Bangor. Did the wife do it? Did the daughter?) And Stephen King was referenced a great deal during this segment, almost like he was another character. He should be paid for how much they stuck him in there. Plus they showed pictures of his office. Mod said that no, he didn't like it; didn't get paid; and wasn't asked permission to use his name or pictures of the office or his house to sell their stories.

Okay. That's enough for now.

Hello again. Sorry if this just gets boring, or sounds very self involved. I can only give you insights to the old board through questions I asked or conversations I was involved in, hopefully some of the other old board members will be sparked with remembrances of their own by the tidbits I throw out here.

At the time, I would say most of the posts were revolving door kinds of things: Can I get Steve's autograph? When will he finish The Dark Tower?, people bitching about The Plant and how Steve cheated us. (Uh, no.) On that last one. Steve, right out of the gate told us that The Plant was an experiment.

He said that if he got 75% of all people to pay for their downloads, the story would continue. The last installment only got 46% payment. Stephen's own quote from that time was, "Pay, and the story rolls. Steal, and the story folds. No stealing from the blind newsboy."

So, anyway, I asked Marsha if she minded if my questions "took the road less travelled." She said that depended on where I was going. As far as Steve finishing The Plant, M said that depended on "whether or not the muse speaks to him again on that story." At this point, I then offered myself as a Muse for his Muse (who Steve says is a basement guy.) My first suggestion was that we drag him up from the basement and stick him on the sunporch. I also offered my services as THE CLEAR EYE FOR THE HORROR GUY.

We had a guy who posted here named Greg a.k.a Ka Baby who vowed to post a note to Steve every day until he got a signed first edition of something. He petered out pretty quick, but, he did spark an idea. I suggested that the site could give away a signed Stephen King book to the 1 millionth post. I asked Marsha to "throw me a bone and tell me this has potential." At the time, she said it just might, although they would keep the number random and secret so the site wouldn't crash from a spike in activity as the magic number approached.

Uh, Mod? I take it we haven't reached that magic number yet?

More later.

Purple cow, purple cow:wink2:
Yep, I was thinking of those as well.

Ms. Mod, I do not find this purple cow thing to be all that helpful. Any other suggestions? :biggrin2:

I completely blocked the memory of the ugly toes. I only remember those cute little toesies with the cute smiley faces on them. Probably because I was jealous of how well she drew those faces on there. How the heck did you do that? Nevermind-I don't really want to know; I want it to remain magic! :biggrin2:

Hi,

Yeah, Isabella the trollopy llama.

Good job we're still getting 'alfalfa' deliveries for the llama infestation.

Long days and pleasant nights

There was that one of really deformed feet but those weren't Flakes. I think you may be thinking of that one, Spidey.

I remember the first time I visited the SKMB. It must have been at least six years ago. There were posts that you could barely read for all of the misspellings and grammatical errors. Was it Jordan who asked the poster to please proofread before posting? It might have been. If memory serves, there was just a single line of posting without a subject line or category. Did I dream this? And Spideyman was the first member name I saw on the board.

You remember correctly, Charms, that the first version of the message board about a decade or so ago was just continuous posts without any subjects, categories, etc. We then went to the first threaded board using Ikonboard software and then switched to the vBulletin software as it gave us some options Ikonboard didn't offer.

It might have been Jordan who suggested people proofread first or it might have been me--can't remember. For a while I'd try to correct the spelling errors and typos before they were posted because folks can't go back to edit but frankly, I've pretty much given up on it because it takes so much extra time that I don't usually have. I figure if people can't be bothered to proofread before they hit the Post button, then they must either not be that worried about how it looks or don't realize it's a mistake in the first place. If I'm somewhat caught up, I'll fix the typos before posting unless the message is filled with them.
