You have a million dollars that you need to donate. Where does it go?

Hi,
Very tricky one, as there are nearly 6 1/2 billion deserving causes before we even start talking about animals.
I wouldn't know where to start, but I'm looking forward to reading the posts here.

I'll donate it to my bank account.

I'll donate it to my bank account.
My money would go to animal rescue. Especially an organization that deals with pit-bulls.

A local no-kill animal shelter or the ASPCA, Defenders of Wildlife, World Wildlife Federation, etc.

Yeah, I think I'd definitely donate some of it to my own bank account. LOL
But, if I "need" to donate it, a very large portion would go to the Susan G. Koman Foundation for breast cancer research. I'd also donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Special Olympics, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Marines Toy-for-Tots Foundation (to name a few, but there are so many great charities!).

I'm with John. There are so many deserving causes it would take very careful and cautious thought. It's just a million, you say???:oh:

At this point in the game, I'd split it between lupus research and a hospice house. The local hospice house struggles to have enough money to help people die comfortably. They need a boost. Lupus research is an obvious enough choice for me.

Doctors Without Borders, Catholic Relief Services, the local food bank.

When Kim said "local food bank," I had to nod my head. Actually I think I'd keep it all local, donating to food banks, my church's Good Samaritan program, and maybe half to our local library for renovation and summer programs for children.

There are too many charities. My head would spin just trying to choose. I have a soft spot for children and animals.
However, I'd make a large contribution to Amnesty International, who fight for human rights, and the release of political prisoners across the globe, and provide a voice for those who would be silenced by the corrupt regimes that they are forced to live under. :smile2:

Shelters for victims of domestic violence and high school programs designed to educate about what they call "dating violence"

I would divide it up among several charities, but the bulk of it would go to the National Kidney Foundation.
I'm a kidney transplant patient as are 3 other members of my family. The medication needed to keep the kidney from rejecting is about $650 a bottle and that's only for one month. When we went to the NKF looking for assistance with this medication they couldn't help us because there were not enough funds. It's been a rough ride for the last 2 and a half decades, but it working out.

Building and stocking shelters to be used during hurricanes for animals. So that the human companion can stay with their critters. Not the sign up type where only one small animal can accompany the companion. Even provisions for large animals too- horses. No human should have to leave their companion behind, or die staying with them.

just a million? o.k. i'd do part to cancer research--a cure is out there some where--and part to hospice. i learned about these things when my mom was ill and i took care of her right up till the end. my dad was extraodinary but the sicker she got the harder it was. so if i had money to help fix this i would in a heartbeat. now dad is facing some of the same things 3 years after mom died. so maybe the million could help him and so many others!!!!!!!

Food banks, churches and local library is good. Summer school for kids is great, but why not bail out a local (failing) company, save a bunch of jobs, and lower the number of people needing help. This fixes the root of the problem - working families don't need (as many) handouts as unemployed families!

It does make your head spin. I'd have to say that animals deserve more than most of us humans! The domestic abuse issue covers alot of ground. Preventing teen/unintended pregnancies, and drug and alcohol abuse programs would help. The government pays alot of money out to victims of domestic abuse, especially if they have to leave and care for their children. Prevention is the key.

I would set up and revolving scholarship program for the local high school. I would pay it forward, as this is how I got a full ride scholarship! :)

I would choose 4 and give them each $250,000. One would have to be St. Phillip's Catholic Charities (they helped us a few times); one would be an animal advocate; one would have to help children here in the US; and the other would have to help children in other countries.

Probably child causes and animal abuse, and of course some would pay my bills and my families.

I think I would dole it out individually. I would hang out at womens shelters and soup kitchens. Walk up and hand them couple of thousand. Especially women with kids in a shelter, or family living in their car, you know. Help a Mom with her kids in tow in the grocery store with a loaf of bread and a pack of bologna paying with change and hoping she has enough to cover it. Been there know how that feels. It would feel real good to hand her some money and say go buy some groceries. Buy an elderly persons meds in the pharmacy who can't buy them all. I saw that the other day, broke my heart. So many ways to help the person standing beside you. Good thread.

It would have to be Cancer Research so they, hopefully, find a cure for this horrible, horrible illness.
