Dan Brown tries hard to write a good book. He succeeds in writing an interesting, exciting story and fails in the writing.

Haven't read a thing by Harlan Coben.

I could go without reading another book by James Patterson.

Stephanie Meyer writes books for teenage girls - not my cup of tea. Not to mention, I began to read Twilight and Stephen was right... she isn't a great writer.

John Grisham is off and on with me. I hated A Painted House, and thought nearly everything he wrote in the last ten years was mediocre. His early stuff, Skipping Christmas, A Time to Kill (which is "early stuff", but worth mentioning) and his non-fiction book The Innocent Man were ranging from good to great with me.

I've stayed away from all of them except John Grisham. I read The Chamber (oh the follies of youth) but it wasn't terribly noteworthy in my opinion and I haven't gone back for seconds.

I've only read a couple of Grisham's books and that's it from the list. Grisham is an OK writer, but it's a "been-there-done-that" issue for me. Legal language and all that court room/lawyer stuff gets old for me after a while.

Dan Brown- to me, just cheap writing, don`t like it.

Harlan Coben- read ALL of his work, if you want a really good thriller ( as oppossed to Browns cheap thrills ) read " Tell no one " and " The Woods " - absolute heartstoppers.

James Patterson- the absolute worst in the bunch.

Stephanie Meyeer- see above comment for JP.

John Grisham- excellent writer, many books are really good.

Forgot to add:

Dennis Lehane and Ian Rankin beat all of those guys, IMO.

Dan Brown: I've read all but one of his books (Digital Fortress) and I'll agree with most everybody else. Fun, Fast, thrills. So-So writing.

Harlan Coben: Read many books by Mr. Coben and actually had the honor of meeting and talking with him at a small signing he did here recently. This guy is just as fun in person as his writing is on paper. Funny, witty and full of energy. I recommend anything by him. Also go to a signing if you get a chance. He'll have everybody laughing and having a good time the moment he steps in the room.

James Patterson: Read a few, they were entertaining. But come on... 4 or 5 books a year. I now boycott him. I'm not even sure he's actually writing them.

Stephenie Meyer: Thought Twilight was worth the read. Books 2 and 3 dragged on a bit. However, the real gem is her stand-alone peice of adult fiction, The Host. Fantastic sci-fi/romance story.

John Grisham: I've read 5 or 6 Grisham. I like them, but I don't feel the need to get everything he puts out.

I completely forgot Grisham wrote "Skipping Christmas!" I actually did enjoy that and really liked the movie "Christmas With the Kranks" too.

Dan Brown- Enjoyed his two best known novels (I know a new one is just about to be released). Fast paced, summer reading.

Harlan Coben- Have not read

James Patterson- Do not like at all

Stephanie Meyeer- Have not read

John Grisham- Runs hot and cold for me.

And since he was mentioned, I think Lehane is awesome. I have read four of his books and loved all of them. Shutter Island, which is considered by many to be one of his weaker books, stayed with me for a while.

I mostly read horror authors but I think that George Orwell is most likely one of great authors of the last hundred years I mean look at 1984.
I have plans to read a lot of authors but I won't be reading Dan Brown or Meyer.

I'm with Sirbo. Although i love the character Alex Cross, mostly because of the actor Morgan Freeman.

I'm seriously glad you asked! I slept through James Patterson, three books, I gave the lad a chance. Never read Harlan or Brown but the twilight stories actually made me angry. (You did WHAT to a horror icon?)

You know my least favorite thing about Grisham; that guy spends half of his books trying to sell us on how ethical lawyers are and eighty percent of his writing is dialogue. "Hero Lawyer" steps up on a ethical or moral pedestal that some poor secondary character has to listen too. You just know no one would befriend these lawyers and in real life the pal would wander off to make a bladder call just to avoid the conversation. ... I've read a few of his books and groan every time I get to this point. It's not original or good. I rely (myself) on a lot of classics. I did really dig almost everything written by Michael Crichton as well as SK.

Dan Brown- don't like it basically the problem is the stories are ok but the writing does nothing for me. Angle and Demons was okish but the Da Vinci Code...the ideal wasn't gd.

Harlan Coben-no read yet.

James Patterson-writes some gd stuff.

Stephanie Meyeer- a rubbish wordsmith but clever....she found a market writing dirty books for teenage girls (u want proof? read the fan fiction)

John Grisham- I liked some of his stuff but not all.

I haven't read Coben or Patterson. I thought Dan Brown had some good premises, but failed in the technical parts of writing. His characters had no depth, and the plot had to rely on unrealistic coincidences.

As for Stephenie Meyer-I only read half of the first book for no reason than to have an opinion on a book that everyone has been talking about. I think it is the worst book I've ever had the displeasure of attempting to read.

I'm gonna go against the grain here for the most part.

Dan Brown - I love reading his books - fast paced and really interesting. I've already pre-ordered The Lost Symbol.

Harlan Coben - The only Coben book I've read is Tell No One and I thought it was a great read.

James Patterson - Love his books, not because they are amazingly written books but because they satisfy my need for a good mystery that I can read quickly (I can read most of his stuff in a day due to the short chapters). He has written some duds that I didn't like but for the most part I really enjoy his books. In my book collection, you'll find the name James Patterson the most. As for him not writing his books, he has said so himself that provides very detailed outlines to his co-authors to write the book.

Stephanie Meyer - Never gonna touch her books.

John Grisham - I only got into his books in the past year. Great writer when it comes to legal thrillers. I'd recommend The Firm, it's the best one I've read.
