Well, it's taken me a while to get through this series, and I have read other books inbetween - I'm on the last chapter of S o S, and, oh my, am I glad I decided to give DT another go. Everything I've ever read by SK suddenly makes much more sense - I won't give anything away - i've been shocked, surprised, moved etc. and this particular volume made me laugh out loud in places. I can't wait to get stuck into the final book! oh, just one last thing....
If I could hop back and visit myself in 1977, I'd surely advise against that awful perm in 81!

I just finished S O S yesterday. I'll be starting book 7 later today. I can't wait!!
Wizard and Glass was hard for me to get through, but that may be because I had already read the 1st Gunslinger series from Marvel and knew what was going to happen. Intrestlingly enough, I went back and re-read the Marvel series and found it lacking compared to the book.

I was about to give up the whole series (never likes that Roland fella) and I was only wishing it to end so Mr. King will have more free time on his hands. But then I opened Wolves of the Calla and knew right away, from the first passage, that I was a goner, and it is 'til this day, one of my absolute favorites.

I really enjoyed S O S, but the best is yet to come in DT7.

Agreed. Although I love every book in the series, DT7 is my favorite.

I just finished the series last week, and I for one enjoyed every book along the way for it is the journey that makes it a great story. If I had to pick a favorite one it would probably be The Drawing of the Three thats the one that got me really hooked and of course The Dark Tower is great as well, I didnt want it to end in a way. I thought Wizard and Glass was good too, and im suprised to see how many readers didnt enjoy learning about Roland's early life and his relationships with his friends, it did stray away from the Dark Tower a little bit, but I felt it was important to know what made Roland the way he was.

SoS was a breath of fresh air for me after reading DT volumes 1 thru 5. King's books have that slow-pace-big-build and don't really get to the action until the end. Each time I'd finish a DT book and start the next one, it would be back to the slow moving development each time.
SoS pulls you right into the action and doesn't let go.
Dark Tower 7 is a doorstopper...but it's a fast paced doorstopper. Enjoy!

I'm reading song of Susannah at the moment and I have to say I really like it, I didn't think I would, as it got quite bad reviews on amazon and other places, and is generally known as the worst of the series, I can't really see why myself, I'm finding it quite exciting, can't wait to see what happens.

This was the one I liked least in the series but at the same time I felt it was necessary to have all of this information told seperate from the last book, so I'm glad all of that wasn't crammed into the last book.

Number 8 is pretty "out there," I don't quite know how to describe it.

:wink2: there are no bad reviews for Stephen King books, especially loved Song of Susannah, Stephen King could scribble on a 'used' napkin and it would be frameable

wizard and glass is probably my favorite read ever, just saying, but s o s was great because after it was over if left me amazed that so much could happen in such a short time.

Just finished and loved Song of Susannah... even though like Wizard and Glass, I was wary, mainly due to the titles, but both books have surprised and I am enthralled.
DT6 may have been my favorite so far. Seeing sai King become part of the story. Roland and Eddie's entire storyline in Maine. And the rest of ka-tet in NYC. Awesome! And the WTC becoming part of the story.
I'm so ready for my mind to be blown after DT7.
And I will finish just in time for UTD!

I'm right there with you on DT7, I can't wait to read it. I'm in love with the series (and probably with Roland of Gilead), and it makes me so anxious when I have to wait for my book to come in. My library has books 1-4 and I've had to request 5 and 6 and now 7. I think after I finish the series, I will buy the last three paperbacks secondhand and donate them to the library so future readers won't have to wait so long to read the whole series!

It's surprising to me that Wizards and Glass is getting such a bad rap here. It is mostly a love story, (the way only SK could write one) but one I thought was just outstanding with regaurd to the rest of the series. If I had to rate the books (favorite -to -least favorite) I'm not sure how that would go exactly, but personally I think I would put W a G above S o S.
I was absorbed from the moment I began reading the series, not one of the books in it was difficult to get through in the least for me! I just love SK's style, he could probably write a book about making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and I would buy it in hardcover

I have a copy of SoS but have not read any other works of the DT series of books. I want to start reading it now but Im wondering if it will spoil the continuity of reading the others when I get them. I have a copy of Wizards and Glass too. I would really appreciate some advice on this so that I don't spoil the experience of these books for myself. Do each of them stand alone?:smile2:

They do not each stand alone. They are all part of a series. I would not suggest reading SoS without reading the first five, as you will be missing a lot of necessary back story (a couple thousand pages worth?). Start with the Gunslinger and read them in order, otherwise, it will be quite confusing and won't make much sense.

Gan's kai-box?
So, Eddie and Roland meet with Sai King for the first time. After they leave he rights the note to Jake. Dad-a-chum dad-a-chee, not to worry, you've got the key. Then he pops the note into his mouth and swallows in, smiling.
During they're palaver King says he's not sure if he IS Gan or if Gan flows through him or what. If he is Gan and he just at that note, then how did it get to New York at the hotel desk for him? plop
Wash your hands after reading that Jakey!

I' m about to finish the 5th book and I haven't read S o S yet. I've been searching for it about 2 months in every bookstore I had in mind, and all of them, but ALL of them, told me that the 6th book had been sold out! I don't know when editors will republish it and I can't wait until the editors would decide it to move on... What are they waitting for, to re-translated it?! Please, show us mercy!
I can't find it in English too, even in bookstores which provide books in English... What am I going to do? Waitting I suppose eh? Pfff... I guess that I' ll have to take my King's dose by reading other books of him until I get S o S. It's ironically to have the last book *I din't want to lose that book too, so when I found it I bought it* and not the sixth. It's madness. :eek2:

Is there an 8th book in the DT series?

I believe King is currently working on an eighth book, but is a story that will sandwich between 4 and 5. I think it is a retelling of the Battle of Jericho Hill and the death of his original Ka-tet. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think that Cuthbert is also Eddie. Because I am both of them. So we're all acquainted.

I enjoyed the song of Susan. I liked Jake and Callahan's adventures in New York. When Roland and Eddie met Cullum that was an awesome shoot out.Not to mention putting Tower in his place!I think you should never go into a book with preconceived ideas. If you learn anything from Roland it's that you should take it as it comes and deal with it.
