My brother is giving his daughter the middle name Oriza from The Wolves of the Calla, but we're not sure how to pronounce it. We think it's Oh-rye-za, with the accent on the second syllable. Anybody got any ideas?

Hi,

Welcome to the MB, and keep posting!

That's exactly how I've always pronounced it too, congrats to your brother - lovely name IMO.

I always sort of thought it would be Or-izz-ah although he can probably pronounce it however he likes it best. It does make a cool name!

I'm pretty sure that it's pronounced "Oriza".

Hope this helped. :smile2:

I had thought that it was Or-E-za, with a short i instead of a long i. But now that I think about it, I like yours better.

i always though it was Ohr-eez-uh.
But, I could be wrong.

why not let the daughter decide when the time is right? everyone can look forward to the day when she pronounces herself. mark the occasion with celebration. another day on the calendar to look forward to each year.

I think you got it right with "oh-RYE-za." Maybe Stephen could give us the official pronunciation if Ms. Mod asked.

I think this is an awesome idea, though. Maybe she'll even grow up to be a professional razor-sharp-dinner-plate-thrower.

If I remember correctly from the audio books I think it was Oh-rye-za, as you said.
Pretty name. :smile2:

I just listened to the audio version because I know they asked for Steve's input on pronunciations and it was pronounced Or-eye-zahs with emphasis on second syllable.

I'll never hear that in my head when I read it, though, I'm sure.
This is why I mispronounce rhinoceros, too. I read it before I had the chance to hear someone say it.
I think it's a pretty name and very, very cool!

Hi,

All her life my mother had an image of a lion running around the world when she heard the word 'equator'.

When she'd first heard it at primary school she misheard the teacher and thought she said 'The equator is a menagerie lion running around the world'

Long days and pleasant nights

Oh, that is really cute. And definitely something a kid would think, my daughter has similar ideas.

I learned to read a couple of years before I went to school, so I knew a lot of words but not how to say all of them.
I say Rhinoceros: Rin-oh-cer-ohs.
