While reading the short story "Night Surf" in the collection of short stories book "Night Shift" I started wondering if it is anything like the "The Stand" itself? I know it is the same world, and virus and that's why I am asking. Does it have the same feeling? Because I couldn't stop thinking on that short story after I read it.

Another question is that does anyone know if this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stand-Stephen-King/dp/0340951443/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240331276&sr=8-1

is the complete uncut version too?

Aarny,

I haven't read "Night Surf" yet so I can't answer your question, however, I can tell you that The Stand is an amazing book. It's definitely the kind of story that you'll be thinking about for days after.

Enjoy!

From what I remember other than the mention of Captain Trips, there's not much correlation between Night Surf and The Stand and there are even enough inconsistancies to make me consider them both as separate works taking place in separate worlds. I believe that Night Surf was written first although I could be wrong on that since publication order doesn't necessarily always follow the chronological order that the stories are written. A quick check on Wikipedia tells me that Night Surf was first published as a short story in Ubris in the spring of 1969. I'm not sure when the Genesis of The Stand began, but my guess is that Night Surf was written first and that The Stand took the idea of the virus and SK created a new more epic story centered around the idea.

In The Stand, no mention is made referring to the virus as A6 although maybe SK just didn't feature a place or characters with that reference since I'm sure there were different ways people referred to it around the world. Most people just called it the superflu.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm pretty sure this will be the next book I will pick up, since I've been hearing nothing but great views on it.

The Stand is a great book!!! Night Surf kinda feels like one of the stories not included in The Stand since it references Captain Trips.
