View Full Version : My 13 year quest

Finally, after 13 years together, I have talked my husband into picking up SK. (cheers and claps- although how he resisted the urge to pick up a book just for curiosity's sake is beyond me, I have only been raving about them the whole time he has known me!) Only problem- he wants to do audiobooks so he can listen to it while he works, and I have very little experience with audiobooks. (I mean, I know what they are-I do live in this century!:biggrin2:)

He picked up Duma Key and Lisey's Story, and is three discs in to DK. And loving it, I should add. At this rate, he will be done with both of them by late next week. In my quest to convert him to picking up the book form, I am determined to get him good and hooked, and if it takes an audiobook to do that, fine.

So for those that have listened to the SK audio library, are there any that stand out above the rest? I realize the story is the same no matter what format, but which ones are read by people that seem to embody the story?

Hearts in Atlantis is very good on audio. So is The Green Mile. On Writing is stellar...I listen to that one about once a year. (And in general, any of the ones read by Frank Muller are impossible to walk away from.) Duma Key was a good one to start with, because both the book itself and the delivery via recording are top notch.

Bag of Bones read by Sai King himself. Goosebumps.
Any read by Frank Muller- awesome.

I am a reader by choice, love the feel of the book in hand, but have just about each audiobook to companion the books. Great for long drives to work, or doing yardwork, etc.

Read or listen on.......

Congrats, Mojo. When you finally get the hubby to read his first Sk book, could you please stop in at our house and give me a hand with mine? :)

Muller read The Green Mile, Different Seasons, and the first few Dark Tower books that I can recall off the top of my head. On Writing is read by the man himself. Hearts In Atlantis is SK and William Hurt. Duma Key is read by John Slattery.

As I mentioned in another thread. I wish my husband would read a book, he thinks that the back of a cereal box is enough. Or if someone texts him. I am so glad my little one loves books as much as I do. :biggrin2:

The only audio book I've ever listened to was Blood and Smoke and only because I had a 5 hour drive ahead of me. I believe all three stories were later released in Everything's Eventual. But that is my only experience with audio books, I prefer the printed page.

I LOVE Blood and Smoke! It has 1408, Gotham Cafe and In the Deathroom. All were in Everything's Eventual. But Stephen himself reads them and I love when he reads the audio books! I just looked it up on Amazon and $27.00 is all it was, so not bad!

Congrats to you, mojo! And to your hubby for his new found good taste!
I've never had the pleasure of hearing an audiobook, but I hear Sai King has used them to "re-read" his Dark Tower 1-3 before starting on 4. He said they're great for researching the stories, because you can't just skip over parts when you're listening. The voice makes you pay attention to every line.
Wow, I just talked myself into trying an audiobook!!:biggrin2:

Nothing can replace ones own imagination used while reading one of his books.

The Mist is excellent, it's not read by a narrator but told by the charcacters own voices. The Body and Shawshank redemption are very good as well

GOOD JOB MOJO!

I have recently fallen in love with audio books. A friend of mine talked me into listening to The Dark Tower on disc, it took her all of 2 seconds to convince me to try it.
I had already read it but hearing it seemed to add an extra dimension, not just picking up the stuff I missed during the first read. I got that plus a bag of chips.
Frank Muller/George Guidall were great and I enjoyed every second of it.
I still haven't listened to a book I haven't read first but I'm going to try and see if I like it. I bet I will.

So anyhow congrats for getting your hubby started on Stephen King no matter the medium, he's quite rare and very well done.... bad humor... sad.

I got my cousin's boyfriend interested in Sai King. He started with The Stand at Christmas and is now working through The Tower books. Maybe because he's young and impressionable (23) he took my advice without asking a question. My husband.......nope....not even interested in the audio books. Very frustrating. But to each his own I guess.
