I haven't read the book, but the movie was, in my opinion, very cheesy. Judging by its popularity with readers, is it safe to say the book differs enough that it won't be a corny joke to me, like the movie version and Child's Play, etc.?

The book is ALWAYS better than the movie. IMHO. There has never been a time when I was disappointed by a book, but several on movies adapted from books. Give it a try, I bet you'll like it. You can make your own movie in your head as you read it:)

I didn't see the movie as, at that point, having watched a few adaptations of Stephen King novels I just didn't feel a film could capture the book. So, I really can't comment on the film quality. But, it's safe to say the book will not come across as a corny joke... the writing is insightful and vivid.

Yes. The book is much better. You'll notice that is a consistent theme with most of SK's works.

The book and the movie have very little in common. Books never come off as "cheesy" in the same way a film can because your imagination will paint the scene in the appropriate way with the proper special effects which appeal to you. Thus, by reading the book you get the real story and the best cinematography possible, your own mind.

I thought the film was terrible but the book was amazing! i've read over 40 of SK's books and this book is the ONLY one that gave me nightmares... Both times ive read it

I'm not much of a lawnjockey, but I do like an active posting session.

"is it safe to say the book differs enough that it won't be a corny joke..."

If in the penultimately penultudinous words of Samuel J. Coleridge...do I need to go on?

Just read "IT."

I was very disappointed in the movie. You're right, it was cheesy. And they changed the ending a great deal, almost like they were running out of film and had to wrap it up before they meant to.

I'll give you a good example of how movies & books differ. There is a short story in Nightmares & Dreamscapes called Chattery Teeth. It's about a guy who buys some of those wined up teeth for his son's b-day. there's a seen were the teeth attack some one. it reads as a very scary seen. They made it into part of the movie Quick Silver Highway. They stuck too the story better than any King movie I can remember, but when they came to that part where the teeth attack instead of it being scary like the story, I almost peed my pants from laughing so hard. You can never judge a book by it's cover or the movie version.
