View Full Version : Stephen King Books you really didn't like

Now, I know we ALL love King, but I mean c'mon, there has to be a book you didn't like. For me, it was desperation. Also, anyone think the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson STINKS BAD? James is a good writer, at times, but he really is trying too hard. I liked Sunday's at Tiffany's and Run For Your life, though.

Hi,
The Tommyknockers. I tried reading it six times before and each time I couldn't get through The Ship in the Earth.
Now it has become one of my favorite novels ever.
Right now I have no dislikes for any King novels. I'll be done with The Tommyknockers by the end of the next hour and then I'll be moving immediatly on to Needful Things.
(Off-topic: Did you ever try reading all of Sai King's longest novels straight? I am. Read Salem's Lot, The Stand, Dark Tower, IT, now The Tommyknockers. STRAIGHT. Only an hour break. Whew! :biggrin2:)

I'm with Cowboy, I like them to different degrees but even that can change on a re read.
However I admit to having a hard time with Lisey's Story.

I really didn't like Tommyknockers and Dark Tower The Gunslinger. But rest of the DT series I love. Maybe Rolands meeting with man in the black don't work for me.

My least favorite would have to be Gerald's Game. I read the whole thing and gave it a shot, but I just didn't like it. A couple of the others I didn't like were Cell, Needful Things, and Insomnia.

"Cell" WAS a little bit too 'Chrightony', but I read the heck out of it in a day.
(It was one of those days, and the correct book). It was a great short turned into a bloated novel.
I think "Carrie" is bish. Glad that "Carrie" hit, because we might not have had a gander at what came after. There's a story buried in there, and apparently a movie (or two) but I just can't or don't want to sit down and _read_ it. I have carried (pardon the unintentional pun) it around with me for two weeks and I'm only just getting to the Prom.
Our Constant Writer hadn't yet learned to 'kill a portion of your darlings.'
A bit strange to finish with the first, I know. Pretty sure I've read all the 'knowns,' and I can't say I have many regrets.
"Carrie" just doesn't flow for me.
Geez o' Pete, after I wrote that sentence I realized I have to apologize for ANOTHER unintended pun.

I couldn't finish Dreamcatcher. It was way too weird, and I really had a hard time staying focused or something. I read that there were some characters from IT in the book, and since that's my favorite King-book, that got up my interest. I never finished that copy, and gave it back to the person I borrowed it from. I'll have to buy it and finish it to get a second view of the book. Maybe I'll even like it.
Desperation didn't do much for me either, but it wasn't all bad.

I hate to say this but I don't like the books of Stephen after 2002 as much
as I liked The Dark Tower Cycle and everything before that... :eek2:
I don't know what is...
It likes Stephen writes a bit softer the last years...

I had trouble with . . .
The Tommyknockers -- What was that one about anyway?
From A Buick 8 -- It didn't seem to have a point, much less a good solid ending.
Hearts in Atlantis -- I liked it, but then again, I didn't. Was this one about Vietnam or the Dark Tower? Also, I wonder how it might have been different had SK actually served in Vietnam.
Considering how short a list this is, and further considering the complete body of work SK has turned in over the years, I think he easily qualifies as the poet laureate of the baby boom generation.
A master craftsman who has reached an extremely high standard of literary excellence for the most part.

I didn't finish the Tommyknockers, but I am going to give it another go this summer. Also, the first time I tried to read Dreamcatcher I couldn't finish it and HATED it. When I got mono in high school it happened to still be on my nightstand so I restarted it, and absolutely loved it. Who knows? Maybe timing makes all the difference :grinning:

There aren't many I didn't like, but Cujo was rather boring, as was Gerald's Game. From a Buick 8 was Christine made over, IMO. Cell wasn't all that good either and I wasn't too keen on the DT, though I read them all. Just something about it that didn't sit right.
Some of the ones listed here by people are some of my favorties. I LOVED Delores Claiborne (my fave SK book), Lisey's Story and Duma Key. The Eyes of the Dragon is one of my faves too.

Jesus Christ! Those are all good books, but that's insane! I don't think I'd ever be able to read them in one sitting. And yet I'm not going on vacation for Spring Break, so... :eek2:
As for books I didn't like, I would say Dark Tower IV. I read it, and the beginning and end were great, as usual with the series. The flashback just didn't feel like his usual writing style, though... I liked getting an understanding of where Roland comes from, but there was just something I didn't like about that book.

I said it! I have not even read a page of any of the DT series.....I am not a Lord of the Rings / fantasy type person. Give me vampires and people that come back from the dead any day :wink2:

I didn't really like Carrie, Insomnia was a bit hard to get through because I couldn't really figure out what was going on and follow it correctly until the 200th page. Great book though....

I didn't really dislike it, but I didn't enjoy 'Salem's Lot as much as The Shining, It and the Dark Tower books(also LOVED On Writing). I felt like I could tell it was only the second book he had published. King has grown as a writer since when he was what...around 26 or so when he wrote 'Salem's Lot? Still a good story, but I feel he's much better than that one.

I didn't like Christine, The Tommyknockers and Insomnia very much. I got about 2/3 through Lisey's Story before I got too bored with it. I'll most likely pick it up again like I did with The Gunslinger. I liked it much more the second time I read it.

I didn't care much for The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. It was a chore to finish. Before I say this next one, I swear I'm going to give it another go soon, but I just couldn't get through....ugh, this is blasphemy.....The Stand. I made it a couple hundred pages in and I just couldn't keep going. I know the masses cannot be wrong, it has to get good. I will be trying again. So easy on the hate mail :)

I have liked all I've read, although there are a lot I'd like to read I haven't yet, mostly It, Tommyknockers, Danse Macabre, and a few others. Some are very different (Lisey's Story for example) from the old school Stephen King books (The Shining, Salem's Lot) but I've never finished one and thought it was a waste of time.

Well, the only one I had a problem with was The Gunslinger but I decided to give it another go, albeit about 12 years later, and I'm about halfway through the DT series now, whilst reading others inbetween.
I don't dislike any of SK's stories - I do tend to rush through the first read though, so they're always better 2nd time around or 3rd, 4th etc........

Tommyknockers was a "two-dayer" for me.
Checked out a paperback from my local library.
When I returned it, a hardcover version was in the entryway on the "Free to Good Home" bookstand.
I grabbed the f out of it.
It's an October 2009 reread.

Gasp!
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was one of my favorites!
Then again... I haven't read that many.
No offense, I was just surprised. But I have heard that From a Buick 8 wasn't that good...
Anyway... I guess mine would be Needful Things...
I tried it and I FAILED. Too many characters and too much buildup.

For me it was Cell. I tried to read it, (about four different times) and I only got half way through every time. I'm not sure, I just think zombie epics are better left for the big screen. But I love every other book by King. He's my favorite author.:smile2:

I have tried 3 times over the last 8 (or so) years to read The Talisman. I read Black House and loved it, but figured I'd get more out of it if I read TT. I tried again late last year - still no go. I got as far as Jack starting his trip west to save his mother and just could go any further.
From A Buick8 was another 'not finished and moved on' book. I picked FAB8 up travelling, read close to 2/3rds and put it aside.
Those are the only 2 Stephen King books I've not been able to finish.
I really feel like I need to push on & try to finish The Talisman.

I recommend you to read Insomnia. It's one of my (many) favorites! When you are in to it you can't put the book down. I promise.
And about the Dark Tower series. I have only read the two first so far and I really like them. Specially the second one. They are very different from Mr King's other books, but they are good just the same. It's like those books are made from a different place in his head :suspect:... Hmmm. The only SK book I didnt "click" with was Liseys Story.
The gunky stuff and all that - just didnt "get it" I suppose.
I have just finished the Gunslinger and although I feel it was well written I am not mad keen on "cowboys" and deserts and stuff (apart from Desperation!)
It took me absolutely ages to get through such a short book and I normall would have had something that size read in a day.
But Im persevering with the second book as I think there will be a point that the story "grabs" me and I wont be able to put it down!

Well, all I can suggest is to re-read a book that you think you didn't like the first time. His books always get better with re-reads. There is so much underlying plot in each of his books, that sometimes it just doesn't click the first time around.
As for myself, the only book I really didn't like was Lisey's Story. However, about a year after it first came out, I re-read it, and I liked it a little better. I'm thinking that maybe the third time might be a charm!

I'm curious here what is it you didn't like about lisey's story. I must say at first I also found it long, like certain of his book. But I gave it a go like a did for the dragon eye book. What fascinates me is the way that author minds was working, Ok so we don't all live that kind of weird existence like he did but what if and what would it do to your mind ... That's what i love of is work. Is what if... And I must say for having my share of mindtrouble that he goes the right way for the imagination going overboard. So why not tell us why you didn't like the books you noted here. that would make a great discussion actually. have a nice day.

Didn't like From a Buick 8, Dreamcatcher, and the second half of Cell.
From a Buick 8 didn't have much of a point.
Dreamcatcher had its moments, but the end was a huge letdown - the movie was better.
When the zombies start levitating flying in Cell, it lost me.

I was like this at first too. I got the first in the series thru the SK Book club. I read the first few pages, but the whole cowboy thing just didn't appeal to me at all.
I got the rest of the books thru the club but they just gathered dust for a number of years. I finally forced myself to read the first one. I was hooked! I've read the series twice now and still love it.
I've found that even the installments that I wasn't keen on the first time around, made more sense the second time around and I ended up liking them more.

Well hopefully I won't get tarred and feathered here, but there are several of his books I haven't read. (Yes I am fixing that!) Of the ones I have read, however, I've loved them for the most part. That said, I have not been able to get into Tommyknockers at all. I've tried twice. But my mom (who's read all but the DT series and Just After Sunset, which is a mother's day gift for her) is going to try to read The Gunslinger again and I am trying to read Tommyknockers again.

as I liked The Dark Tower Cycle and everything before that... :eek2:
I don't know what is...
It likes Stephen writes a bit softer the last years...
I agree, although I would say he softened a few years before 2002. I prefer the raw, uncompromising style from his early works, although he has written some good ones in the later years, too.
My least favourites are Rose Madder, Insomnia, Desperation, Geralds game, Cycle of the werewolf, From a buick 8, The gunslinger, Hearts in Atlantis and a quite a few of his short stories. Apart from these, most of his other books are excellent:smile2:

I've had trouble reading a few: Insomnia, The Stand, Needful Things, Dreamcatcher. I got within a few pages of the end of Dreamcatcher, but I never picked it up again. The others, I just couldn't get into them. But that isn't to say they aren't great books, as I did the same thing with Bag of Bones THREE times before actually getting past page 100, and when I did, I loved it and finished it in a few days.

I really didn't care for The Regulators. I found it EXTREMELY hard to follow, especially in keeping track of the characters. One of the things I generally love about SK's stories is the the way he makes me get to know the people in a story, to love (or hate) them. I never felt like I could get to that point in the Regulators. I kept having to find ways to remind myself which character what which.

There is one book and one book only by Stephen King that I was disappointed with and that was "Cycle of the Werewolf." I believe they made that one into the movie known as "Silver Bullet". Now the concept of the story was good but I found that the story lacked A LOT of details. I mean I read the whole thing in like half an hour. There was no depth to the characters. I think he could have done a WHOLE lot better with this book.

I get the point of needing to read the DT series, I really do, and I will read it one day....I finally got my hands on a copy of "It" and I am about 250 pages in...what a great story so far.....so I can understand why some of you didn't like "From A Buick 8", with the most prominent comment being it has no point. Yes, there are only a few characters, but I found them interesting. Does a story have to unveil the meaning of life to be any good? We read for entertainment! For fun! Does everything have to be analyzed to death to have to "mean something"? I liked the story, for me it was a page-turner because I couldn't wait to see what the hell else was going to come out of that trunk. But to each his or her own, and I love reading everyone's thoughts on here....so glad I joined up!

tommyknockers (a weak female voice...)
the dark half (ending made little sense....)
I'm glad that later in life he got better at weaving believable moments together to allow a reader to buy a Brooklyn bridge in terms of the general plot. In that respect he really is the master.
with Lisey's story he knocked the female voice outta the ballpark so I forgave him for Tommyknockers...

I agree with you regarding From a Buick 8 - I know its not popular at all on these forums but I found the relationships between the policemen fascinating - I got really involved in the characters - the young boy who's father had been killed and how it had happened and affected the rest of them - and I actually thought it was quite "real" that the car sat there for years and nothing happened for a lot of time - so when something DID happen it made it actually believable - Ive read the book twice and enjoyed it even more the second time!
I think I must be totally weird because the one book I didnt like was the one a lot of you seem to love - Liseys Story. Also The Dark Half started brilliantly - got even better - then just seemed to fizzle out for me - I felt that the story just went in its own direction, sometimes this can be a good thing, but for me not in this instance!

Now I feel a bit dumb - I relay enjoyed all the books you guys didn't like. The one I thought was too long and felt that should have been left a short story was "Cell". For me it just went on about 100 pages beyond the point of interest for me. Sorry... It does feel a bit like sacrilage :smile2:

The only King I ever had a hard time getting into was Cell. There were bits and pieces of it that I enjoyed, but I didn't enjoy that journey like I did all the others.

I have been reading the message board for a few years now and made a point of reading what posters said were "least favorite" and "hard to get into". I haven't found any of those books yet that didn't completely blow me away. Many start out slow but at about 100 pages they grab and don't let go. I haven't tried Cell yet, may make that my next choice since it seems to be a common less-liked story. I loved Lisey's Story and Gerald's Game among the many named here.

The Girl who loved Tom Gordon and Gerald's Game, I just didnt care what happened to these characters, I think Gerald's Game would serve better as a short story or at least a novella.

Wow. Even the books I liked least still rank higher than novels by other writers... I guess I just love them all unconditionally. But - if I had to pick a least favorite it would be ----Cell.

I haven't disliked any of them. Jury is still out on Colorado Kid as I have yet to read it.

well, this one is tough for me...i would have to say that the hardest one for me to read was Insomnia. I honestly think about 400 pages could have been omitted and we really wouldn't have lost anything important or missed anything.
i am REALLY i mean REALLY trying to get into the DT series books but I am just having the damndest time getting into the groove with them...cross your fingers for me!

To be honest there is a few i didn't like:
Duma Key (still havent finished it)
Liseys Story
From a Buick 8
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordan
Geralds Game
I absolutely loved the rest
Oh no!!! You have to love Geralds Game, it's given me a life long fear of handcuffs :oo: (well at least to a bed in any case) but I will agree with you on Liseys Story, it was just a bit flat for me and didn't hold the SK magic that I've found in every other works of his that I can think of, I actually like the rest of the books on your list, good thing I'm not a book critic :smile2:

I guess "Cujo" is perhaps my least favourite... It doesn't have to do with the quality of it, it's just that it breaks my heart when an animal gets hurt or dies, and so I don't think I'll be re-reading it anytime soon...

I couldnt make it through Insomnia. I dont think its bad work, its just not for me. It took me a couple of trys to get thru Geralds Game(didnt care for the ending). I just think that if I dont click with a book in the first few chapters i wont enjoy it. I just cant help it :(

Hmmm. I'd like to think that I'm well-read, and I am a character driven reader (as opposed to plot or setting or mythical beasts, what have you) and SK is a great character writer. I think its the plots he sticks the poor believable saps in that grate the "literary" bunch. So on that note I will say my least favorite is Pet Cemetary, as I have never been able to bring myself to read it (I have read every SK book otherwise) in its entirety. I think this is due in part to the film version which I listened to from my bedroom, whilst peeking through the crack in the door jam. The image of that woman with spinal meningitis horrifies me, as does children coming back from the grave. I should really give it another go. I am a grown damn woman who shouldn't be afraid of a silly book.

Hi,
If you're having problems getting into The Gunslinger (many do), can I respectfully suggest you move straight on to The Drawing of the Three?
NO-ONE in my experience has difficulty getting into Drawing, and you can always come back to Gunslinger IMO.

Hmm...has anyone else noticed that Misery isn't on any of these lists? Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorites, but I found it amusing to see that others seem to like it (or at least, not dislike it).
I really don't have a book that I didn't like. Granted I still have many of his books that I need to read, but out of the ones that I have, none haven't appealed to me.

I've heard alot about how people didn't like Lisey's Story and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordan but those are some of my favorites!!!
I do have to admit though I didn't immediately love The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordan.... It took about half-way into the book to really get me hooked and honestly freaked out....however it probably didn't hurt that I finished it sitting next to a fire on a camping trip in the big bad woods.
As for Lisey's Story and From a Buick 8 I love those books and have re-read them many times.
If I had to pick one Stephen King book I didn't care for it would have to be Insomnia. Although I was in my teens when I attempted to read it and am planning to give it another go shortly so who knows?

"Desperation" really didn't do anything for me. I love almost all the others. The relationship between the characters in the "Dark Tower" series is very special.

Without a doubt Desperation and Cell. Gerald's Game gets an honourable mention but I never finished, so it doesn;t seem right. Definitely the last 350 pages of Cell, though.

I haven't read a King book I've bluntly "disliked", but I did find Insomnia to be a little too crazy and slow-paced for me. Still enjoyed it, though (read the entire book), but no where as much as I enjoyed Bag of Bones.

Wow man! You're blowing me away here :oh:. You really don't like Insomnia?! I totally LOVE that book I want them to make a film of it! And I also liked Needful Things and Geralds Game. Havent red Cell yet, but I will.
Quando omni flunkus moritati ~ when all else fails, play dead
I would LOVE to see it on film, too. It would hopefully be easier for me to get into than the book. I was so confused have the time. :eek2:
Oh, and I see some people are talking about James Patterson: I used to be a HUGE Patterson fan. I read "Big Bad Wolf" in 1 day. However, now that I've read a handful of his books, I've realized his formula is becoming very predictable. I still enjoy his books from time to time, but they leave me empty. Not much to ponder on -- much like Twilight (which I find HIGHLY overrated).

All of his books i love! Even if the story isn't catchy(it always is though), his writing is! i love his voice! When you find his voice, everything is just pleasing! Stephen King ROCKS! :)

Gah, the Talisman! Even though it was a joint effort I found it to be so boring. I ended up putting it down towards the middle of the Sunlight Gardener's Facility section.
I think it was the whole fantasy element that put me off, and each scenario seemed a bit forced (if that makes sense.)
I thought Dolores Claiborne to be a bit boring too, but I didn't dislike it in the way I did the Talisman.

Pet Sematary.
Not that it was poorly written or not a good story. It scared me and disturbed me so much it is the one and only SK book I have that I have not and will not re-read. I hate it. It belongs in the freezer forever and ever.
