Hi Ms. Mod,

Can you tell us what is going to be contained in this?

I can confirm that they have recently decided to do one but aren't at the point to give out details yet. As soon as we have any firm information that has been approved for release by the publisher, we'll make an announcement.

The last I heard they were putting out offers to readers but I don't think a final decision has been reached yet for the audiobook.

:umm: Don't they normally publish the book before any audio books come out?? And is still true that hard cover editions of SK's books be out for a year before the paperback?? Good reading..Mark FFVII:grinning:

Well I'm taking a wild guess here but I assume the Collector's Edition will have
1. King's autograph (which is not much for me personally as I'm not that big on autographs)
2. A slip cover (this is a given, but again, I don't need one to enjoy the book itself)
3. A dozen illustrations (which, is always a neat little extra depending on the choice of the illustrator picked)
But beyond that I can't think of much else they would add that would get me to spend more than the 35 dollar street cost, though, I am also well aware that there is a large enough bunch of King collector's out there in literatur-ville willing to buy this kind of thing.

This nod (in my opinion) of approval from the publisher (in these long term tough economic times) to spring for such a bonus filled version (whatever the bonus extras might be) of the story means that it's going to be worth it no matter which version you prefer to get and that's always a good thing.

The audiobook has been published simultaneously with the hardcover edition for the past few books and we expect this one to also be released at the same time. Typically it's about a year between the hardcover and paperback release, sometimes a little less.

In the US, yes.

In the UK you can get a full size paperback on the same day as the hard cover is released. I buy the paperback as a reading copy.

Kinda sounds like it could be a mix between cell and tommyknockers.

The other day I was thinking it was like a mix of THE STAND (characterization and plot) and THE LONG WALK (political themes and/or allegory). Either way, it sounds like a great one!

MS MOD: I found a website (can't remember the name of it, it comes up in a GOOGLE picture search), which had a cover design for the novel posted. The picture was sort of multi-colored and had two onion-dome looking structures (each pointing in opposite directions) in the middle. It looked kind of neat, actually. Does this sound like one of the suggested cover designs?

Wonder if this collector's edition should be submitted for Pulitzer?

The text of the novel won't be different from the mass market edition, so that should not have any bearing on a submission for a Pulitzer.

When most Collector Editions come out are they typically signed?

I have normally just cared about the story and not so much the actual physical book.

It would be kind of cool to get an autographed book though.

Simon & Schuster says the cost of the "Collector's Set" will be $70. It also has different ISBN numbers than the trade edition. For the extra $35, I seriously doubt it will have King's signature.

I agree with the doubt that this may be signed. Most Stephen King signed Limited Editions cost $225 - $250+ from the publisher (like Cemetery Dance's "From A Buick 8" or Donald M. Grant's "The Dark Tower").... but what the heck could be different? A holographic cover and soundtrack CD? :wink2:

I like the illustrations that come with the special sets like these. I would love to get that Talisman/Blackhouse gift set in black and white. That combo looks great! I probably won't have enough mula to spend on the Under The Dome set. We got a new baby coming in August. I doubt the wife would be to thrilled about me spending $70-$250 on a book when that could go to diapers, etc. It will be tempting though.

This was in an on-line book dealers latest email:

Following are some of the highlights of the Collector's Edition:

Belly band
Jacket (will be the same jacket as on the trade state)
Housed in a stamped case
4 color printed endpapers
Ribbon marker
Deck of cards (apparently this relates to the book)
Shrinkwrapped
25,000 copies

Faith, because there are supposed to be only 25,000 copies of the Collector's Set, the store may not put them out--you may have to ask them for a copy. That's what I had to do with the Just After Sunset Collector's edition that included the DVD of "N".

I've been authorized to release the official information from Scribner about the collector's editions, so here you go:

Scribner will publish two Collector’s Editions. The regular Collector’s Edition will have a special jacket with a belly band, a stamped case, four-color printed endpapers, a ribbon marker, and will contain a set of 27 special trading cards featuring drawings of characters from the book (drawn by cartoonist Matthew Diffee). These drawings will also be featured in the book—as a frontispiece image and on the 26 part title pages. The book will be shrink-wrapped and Scribner will print only 25,000 copies of this edition, priced at $75.

Scribner is also offering 1,500 copies of a signed, limited Collector’s Edition. This contains all the special elements listed above, plus the book will be signed by the author. This is priced at $200.

Here is the link to Scribner's site (http://books.simonandschuster.com/Under-the-Dome-Collector%27s-Set/Stephen-King/9781439156971) for information about pre-ordering the unsigned edition. I've asked them about the signed edition and was told that it will likely be sold via the Simon & Schuster website, but plans are not yet finalized. Ms. Mod, is there any way you can find out if the signed edition will be the same exact book (physical material) as the regular unsigned collector's edition? I think this is an important distinction, holding up a lot of folks who would otherwise be happy preordering the unsigned version (myself included)

I know the Scribner rep, when commenting in a recent article, referenced the signed edtion as an opportunity to do an "Object de' Art" left some of us wondering if the signed edition might be something along the lines of Doubleday's amazing The Stand limited, while the unsigned Collector's edition might be along the lines of the recent Lisey's Story collector's edition.

Thanks for any info you can dig up!

So the signed collector's edition is on sale today.....1,500 copies. I bet they sell out out fast.

But now I'm thinking about the logistics of this.....1,500 books doesn't seem like a lot if you're a fan, but what must it look like from Steve's perspective?

1. 1,500 of these books are equal to ~ 1700 cubic feet, well more than can fit in a van (or several, for that matter).
1a. Do the books come to Steve, or does he go to the books?

2. At ~ 3 pounds per book this is more than 2 tons. Hopefully Steve has lots of helpers to lift and move the literal tons of paper during a signing session.

3. Let's say Stevie can sign 5 books a minute. Working at this pace without a break requires 5 hours to sign 1,500 books. And I suspect that with writers cramp and other discomforts that it may take twice as long.

4. Now add to this consideration that there are ~ 7 more signings planned each with ~ 200 - 250 books....there's another 1500 at least, so double it again.

Wow! I really appreciate the chance to possess such a treasure.

Moderator
September 15th, 2009, 10:33 AM
They come as "tip sheets". For those who aren't familiar with the term, they are simply the single pages on which the signature appears. They are then "tipped into" the book when it is bound with the rest of the pages. He usually has to sign a small percentage over and above the number of copies that are planned just in case anything goes wrong when they bind the books.

Dear Stephen King,

I am one of your many number one fans, writing to you from Winnipeg, Manitoba. As only a rabid fan would do, I eagerly anticipated my chance to get my hands on a signed edition of under the dome. I hopped into bed early and wound my alarm clock to be sure to be up for the 9AM EDT time release and eagerly sat with my finger twitching above the mouse click.
I have never been so happy as when my order was processed and Simon and Shuster sent me a confirmation email that yes, I was one of the lucky few to have reserved my copy of under the dome. Having already gone to great pains to have the book shipped to the border and planning a three to four hour round trip to pick it up (not to mention the likelihood of paying a hefty duty on it) in November, I was horrified to recieve an email from Simon and Shuster stating that my order had been cancelled. No explanation, no reasoning, just cancelled. Why I wondered. And now, I'm angry and upset, because it's just like being told Santa Claus doesn't exist for me.
I just wanted somewhere to vent, so that others might know the pain of being a fan in Canada, and not being fairly able to access such a fantastic addition to my Stephen King collection.
So to Simon and Shuster I ask why? Why can't I have one too! And Stephen, if on the far off possibility you read this post and can flex your considerable writerly muscle to Simon and Shuster, then please make them adhere to their original agreement in selling me a copy of your new book. As a big fan, the next best thing aside from meeting you in person, would be having a signed copy of your work.
Your biggest Canadian fan, a writer inspired by your work,

To all our friendly Canadian dudes and dudettes:

Do not blame the Kingster!!! he does not control the distribution rights and cannot over rule the many publishers---

May i suggest finding a Canadian Compatriot in the UK---and setting up a system to mass buy for whatever group hodders will have their limited editions--and previous messages indicated they may have signed limiteds too! obviously has to be a trusted relationship---and peeps have to work out the system--might be the only way!

was the shipping to a US address? they only accept US currency so the issue may have been the Canadian credit card? In which case Simon Shuster should have made it known they not only will ship but wont take intl cards as well.

SO sorry for all who did not get what they thought:down:--but don't blame Sai King! he is not selling per se...

Your biggest Canadian fan, a writer inspired by your work,
Jeremy R. Strong

FYI for the Canadians....although I share your frustration, let me suggest how to succeed the next time. I suspect that it was your payment card with a Canadian "bill to" address that ultimately brought attention to your purchase. Next time, when you arrange with a US compatriot to accept your delivery and forward the shipment, you should also arrange to have them pay with their US bank card (you can reimburse them by PayPal, Western Union, or an old fashioned paper bank draft (check)). I have relatives abroad and I may (or may not) have some experience to share. Good luck!

I'm upset that I couldn't get my hands on a signed collectors edition. My husband is a huge fan and I hoped to get him this for his Christmas, but as I live in the UK it was impossible. I note from previous responses that H&S may have signed collectors (500??) at some point. Does anyone know if this is the case? I don't know whether to try and get my hands on the unsigned collectors edt or wait and see. Have already looked at Ebay but nothing is up yet.

I, for one, thought that S&S did a good job( or at least the best they could do given their limitations) handling the s/l. I feel like they made it more available for the average joe/jill considering the limitation of 1 per customer( I know that some retailers are mad for being excluded, but in all fairness........the price spike pisses us little guys who just want to spend a "reasonable" amount for s/l) and the price, which wasnt so outrageous that only collectors could shell out the cash for it.

last post from Miss Mod (SK assistant --moderates this board, and does soo much for him and us SK fans!) in another thread stated something like this summary:

there is no guarantee that they will but they did get 500 sig's, so would make sense for them to release them...

G luck!!!!

Any chance of any more Signed Editions becoming available? I knew I should have stayed up and ordered it at midnight. I'm willing to pay extra!

Barrock, the book went on sale at 9am EDT, so if you'd stayed up it would depend on your time zone. The 1500 available editions sold within 5-5 1/2 hours.

I ordered just the novel off of Amazon.com and it said I'd get it about a week after it comes out. That's going to be one... long... week. :eek2:

Hi, I am new here and I was thinking of buying the collectors edition of Under the Dome after reading the amazing Duma Key, however, i do not understand the specifics. I would like to know what the Belly band is (is it removable, or printed on the cover?). I would like to know what makes the special jacket different from the Normal. i would like to know what a stamped case is. And finally i would like to know what four-color end papers are. I don't know if these things are worth spending $30 more, and i am also interested in what they actually are. Thanks.

I pre-ordered the collectors edition from Amazon, but with only 25,000 copies printed I hope they're able to fulfill my order!

I've never pre-ordered anything with such a limited supply before, but wouldn't a preordering reserve a copy? Amazon would have a lot of angry customers if they didn't.

Well Amazon just deducted the money from my account so I guess I'm one of the happy customers!

Sounds like the books have started to ship.
Can anyone confirm that the signed edition is identical to the unsigned collector's edition with the exception of the signature page.
