Greetings, fellow SK fans! I've recently reread "Bag of Bones" and I wanted to make an observation about a certain aspect of the book and see what my fellow readers' thoughts and opinions are. Hands down SK is an absolutely brilliant writer and story teller, my favorite wordsmith of all time, past to present to future.
I have found, though, in my many first reads and rereads of his stories and novels that his handling of, oh, let's say risque matters, love scenes (:blush:) even outright sex scenes, have come across, at least to me, in a somewhat awkward fashion, with a sense of bumbling and stumbling, like a 16 year old getting involved in his first forray of heavy petting with his girlfriend. Case in point John Smith and Sarah Bracknell in the barn in "Dead Zone", Louis and Mrs. Creed's bathtub sponge activity in "Pet Sematary" just to name two right off the top of my head.
However, in "Bag of Bones" SK really raised the bar in both substance and style. The dream sequence that Mike Noonan has involving his deceased wife; Mattie; and the turn of the century singer Sara of Sara and the Red Tops, was without a doubt the most erotic thing that I've ever read in any of SK's works. I blush to say that I was getting just a little "hot under the collar" while reading it, if everyone catches my drift, the content of which I want to keep enough control over so that it will make it onto this board.
I'd like to know what everybody thinks of my observations, and please leave some of your own. This was a side of SK's writing that I had never seen before. Don't really know how he can top it, but I'm sure looking forward to finding out! :wink2: Thanks, fellow readers! Looking forward to everybody's responses soon!

I'll have to make a point of looking for that when I re read Bag of Bones. I have a habit of skimming over erotic passages in any novel. I usually find them to be a waste of time LOL.
I'm thinking to myself "yeah, yeah they did it, let's get on with the story."

I have to kind of agree with you C13, that was probably the most prolific sexual scene SK has written. I think that it was different for him to write because this was a dream sequence and for dream sequences you can write as a fantasy writer. Moreover, I think it was important to the story line to be complete and all consuming. As I recall most of the other sex scenes were to relieve not a sexual tension, but a tension caused by fear (the two you mentioned and the scene in It comes to mind for me). So the sex scenes were not there for the sex, but for the insights to the characters. In that particular scene, it was there for the insights to character, but just as much for the sex. While the situations of his other sex scenes make them awkward for the character (and somewhat for the writer too it seems), this scene in Bag of Bones wasn't awkward because it was a dream. Just my take on it.

I think you are correct. The wife's name was Jo, not Maddie though. Maddie was the little girls mother.

However, I agree with your assessment. Mike and ghost Jo on the floating platform is great stuff. Not over the top but very erotic and maybe that is what SK tries to accomplish. It's a fine line between erotic and smutty.

DT4 was for the most part a exploration of love. Bag of Bones and Liseys Story carry on
the same themes which I hope he will continue to explore.

Hey guys, i am by no means prudish, but for me sex scenarios written by Uncle Steve just don't sit right. This is in no way a judgement of his writing skills, i just personally feel that his stories don't really need the added element of sex.
