I'm an avid fan of LOST on ABC and just started re-reading Duma Key. For some reason or another, I picture John Locke from LOST as Wireman when I'm reading. I don't know if it's because of his older age and wisdom or what. Does anyone else see Wireman as Locke?

Hi,
I must say I came at this the other way round. That's to say that, way before Duma Key I watched "Lost" (until it disappeared from our UK terrestrial TV, and I couldn't afford satellite or subscription TV), and one of the first things I said to my son was that John Locke was a character straight out of Stephen King's mind. I even wondered if SK had had a secret hand in the whole thing, considering "Langoliers" as well; a group of people on a plane whose lives are suddenly altered beyond comprehension.
Just my thoughts though, but your post intrigued me.

It's funny you should say that. Lost is my favorite show, & Locke one of my favorite characters. While reading Duma Key, I actually pictured Locke as Edgar & Jeff Bridges as Wireman. :-)

saw him as a buddy of mine, the rafinburgh, description fit, anyway. but was skimming needful things and leland gaunt is described as "an electrician of the soul". i guess like all the trades, there's a few bad apples in all, even the good ones, if they've been up at bat a time or two, they prolly hit a few foul balls.

Scorpion22 I definitely agree with you about Jeff Bridges as Wireman, he would be the perfect actor IMO. As for Edgar I really can't decide...that is something for me to ponder over tomorrow whilst enduring another boring day at work:down:

Don't watch Lost that much at this point. But pictured Wireman as dark, wavy-haired and handsome, seductive, someone that Elizabeth could just adore--sensitive, gentle. Edgar, by contrast was rougher, shorter-haired, less refined, and thus, perhaps, more able to adapt and survive evil cranes and herons and whatnot.

IDK if this is even close to accurate, but I always pictured him tall, strong, and black, with broad shoulders and some muscle.

That's kinda funny, I also pictured him as an older, strong Black man. I often thought of Scatman in The Shining, I don't know why.

I haven't read Duma Key yet, but I know about Wireman from some conversation and he is already inhabiting the form of John Locke in my mind, maybe just because he is m idea of the wise old fella on the beach.
And I, I love Lost and whenever I watch it i silently wonder if King is at least some kind of INFLUENCE towards it. I hear he is a fan.

I dunno you guys...
Wireman is described as middling-height, stout, and dark-skinned and he uses alot of Spanish; soooo I'm thinking Latino. It brings to mind a younger Eli Wallach to me. Think the good, bad, ugly ugly guy.

I just finished Duma Key. Not my favorite King book, but I enjoyed it and thought it was a good read. I love the show lost, and the show is mentioned in Duma Key, but I do not picture Wireman as John Locke. More like the guy from the good the bad and the ugly. Actually the guy I pictured was a guy named Big Smoke from a video game called Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, but the guy from the good, bad and the ugly is a close second and would fit also.

I hope I don't make anyone mad by saying this, but:
Edgar Freemantle = Chris Noth
Jerome Wireman = Cheech Marin
Just my humble opinion.

Actually it's funny that you mention this. For me, Frank Lapidus is a dead ringer for how I picture Wireman. I also think Tim Roth could do a bang-up job as Edgar if this is ever made into a movie.

I see Wireman as James Gandolfini's character in Get Shorty, and I picture Edgar more as Noah Bennett on Heroes (the artist in Kingdom Hospital if you don't watch Heroes).

and I like Jeff Fahey for Edgar (mostly because I've always thought him a hottie) but wasn't he one-armed in Body Parts

Even though he might have been hispanic from the first time he appeared I pictured him as John Goodman for some reason.
I also couldn't get the picture out of my head of Edgar looking like John Lithgow.

Thankyou very much for this info; "electrician of the soul" definitely sounds like Aquarius & sun worship. Namely, in ancient Egypt & the like.Gerald's Game & Rose Red are a few other xamples of books related to this.

I posted this in another thread, but since you mentioned Lost, this is who I pictured as Wireman as soon as King described him:
Tom Friendly (played by M.C. Gainey) from Lost

Hector Elizondo? Description seems to fit him.

Wireman wasn't black, he was very tanned from living on Duma Key.:oo:

Actually the creators of lost have said they are huge fans of Sk. They based the character of Charlie on Larry Underwood from the Stand, Juliet said her favorite book is Carrie and when Ben was recovering from spinal surgery he is reading The Gunslinger. I dnt know about him helping with Locke but now that you mention it seems to fit.

Lost is over and i cried at the end of the finale it was truly sad and beautiful at the same time:sad:  i see how you could get Wireman pictured as Locke because of the wisdom, i have to admit though i had read Duma Key long before i had hopped on the Lost plane to dharma ville, and i have to agree with the person who said he looked hispanic to them, i pictured this mand laying in that chair, feet proped, a little bit of a belly just about to come over his shorts, sandals, with a dark tan poured onto him, a white smile that greeted you, with a mix of native hawaiin and hispanic features.

I pictured Wireman slightly bulky, not ugly yet not attractive, and hispanic, possibly balding. LOL.

From the first page, I pictured Edgar as Terry O'Quinn (Locke).
I couldn't tell you why, I just did.
I also had a mental image of Wireman as a black man, until I read the "deeply tanned" description.
Wireman wasn't Latino, he was married to a Latino women, thus used Latino phrases for her.
I would cast Oliver Platt as Wireman.
