View Full Version : Who would make the best "Blaine" voice?

LittleRedKing

Since Blaine the Mono was one of my all time favorite SK villains, I have often thought about this. Even outside of an movie attempt, I found myself reading all of his lines and hearing them in various voices. The first time I had an idea of what Blaine was really about, Robin Williams came to mind. Maybe it was the whole cowboy/pardner thing he had goin' on, I just imagined Robin W. doing an over the top John Wayne.

Subsequently when I read it, I couldnt help but think of Kevin Spacey. He is one of my favorite actors and has a way of speaking that makes you think he is smirking, even if you can't actually see the smirk.

Does anyone else come to mind when you read Blaines voice?

Dennis Leary keeps jumping into my head but I think not.
Kevin Spacey sounds like a great idea.

God I hate it when Dennis Leary jumps into my head, it's rude and he always leaves a mess. Yeah and once he starts doing it, it's like forever before he stops.
Seriously though that's a good question, I think Kevin Spacey would be good choice. He could probably pull off a really good bad John Wayne impression.
Maybe Joaquin Phoenix.

Hi,

I always thought a generic computer voice would work, IMO.

Very basic and dull, but any human voice would inject the possibility of personality and compassion into Blaine, which would defeat his character.

Also, I never did like computer-generated voices. :oo:

Long days and pleasant nights

I like the idea of a computer generated voice. I don't know why but the voice of the Captain robot on Walle really disturbed me for some reason. It just sounded evil. The SOUNDS that came out of that movie were TOP OF THE LINE! If you haven't watched the special features on the Walle DVD, you should! You will not be disappointed! Very futuristic! Legendary sound designer Ben Burtt has created some of the most iconic noises in science fiction and is famed for bringing natural sounds to the distinctly unnatural realm of sci-fi. He did work with Star Wars and ET.

Now THAT is a great idea...he is just whacky enough to pull it off I bet.

Another great call! Nobody does ticked off like Malkovich. :biggrin2:

Hi,

Ah, but Blaine *did* have a lot of personality. I don't know about compassion, and some of the voices mentioned would be great at leaving that hint of compassion out.

Maybe one of these voices synthesized a bit to sound computer generated yet still a little recognizable.

To this post, I was going to suggest Clint Eastwood, but John Malkovich is also terrific. However, his delivery is not playful, or taunting, enough, as Blaine is at first. My best guess would be Tim Curry, he of "Rocky Horror Picture Show' fame, and 'It'. He has the ability, voice-wise, to go from all of the above to pure rage and frustration in an instant. H'm, never thought of him in that way. Have to look him up.

what about Jack Nicholson? He would be good, Or the voice of Hal from 2001 who was that?

That would be Canadian Actor Douglas Rain but he's 81 years old and it's doubtful he's still doing voices. Good choice though. William Daniels (the original voice of KITT in Knight Rider) is now 82 years old. Val Kilmer is now doing the voice of KITT and he would be good as Blaine. I think Gilbert Gottfried would be too harsh.

I like the Jim Carrey idea. He has the range and tone of voice to go from serious to insane in an instant and it's believable. I'm reminded of his role as The Riddler/Edward Nigma in the Batman film with Val Kilmer.

Kiefer Sutherland. He was in a movie called "Phonebooth" and we didn't get to see him until the end of the movie--he was just this voice on the phone issuing orders.

Douglas Rain, and he reprised it in 2010.

Alan Tudyk had a very similar quality in I, Robot.

Actually Dennis Leary would be a good one as he can throw a temper tantrum well. Plus I don't remember the actors name but he plays an autistic lawyer on Boston Legal. He can throw a rant every now and then.

I can totally hear Blaine telling the Gunslingers to "hug it out"

hahaha, just jokes... I think Hugo weaving would be good actually.. or I can definatley agree with Robin Williams, he can pull off any kinda voice.

I am not sure why..but i could for sure see Dane Cook doing it. like i have never seen him "act" that angry but think about when he like flips out while he is doing his stand up. as Blaine talks i can hear him talking with that little bit of insanity in Danes' voice. hopefully this is not just me that sees this! lol

ronald reagan. but only if he can throw in one of those 'now there you go again...pilgrim!' i think his voice would bump the movie rating up, maybe get a "g" out of it, all warm and fuzzy.

Malcolm McDowell. Hands down my pick. He's got that sophisticated accent and he pull the John Wayne off IMO. I can just hear him getting annoyed to death by Eddie now.

He did alot of voice acting in the game Fallout3 where he played a demented computer that was trying to take over post-apocalyptic America. Coincidence? I think not. :smile2:

It can't be easily recognizable. That pinches the fanny of the fantasy if half the audience instantly says "Oh, that's So-and-So!"

There have been several good suggestions already, but considering the character and origin of Blaine, ya know, logic and all that stuff...I'd offer up Leonard Nemoy with a mild digital distortion filter for the parts when Blaine gets mad.

Patrick Stewart Comes to mind for me. He has a distinct and commanding voice and it is his best asset. The way he can effortlessly convey emotions (such as disdain, arrogance, rage, cheer, contemplation, etc.) is amazing. I dont know about the John Wayne (and others) imitation, but I would not be surprised to find he does them well. If not that would be easy to remedy

I like the idea of Kiefer Sutherland doing it, he was good in the Phonebooth movie, although I would give Ben Stein honorable mention.

Honestly? Blaine the Mono...I originally thought of the voice from 2001, HAL the computer, with soundbytes from famous people thrown in during the appropriate moments, but Robin Williams or Dan Castellanetta would be great. Kevin Pollack would also be terrific (look him up if you don't know who he is...AWESOME comedian and impersonator, probably most famous for his Christopher Walken voice which is DEAD ON).

ok there are many people on here who have never heard Frank Muller read the books... there is no question that he was the best Blaine voice. Now that he has gone to the clearing at the end of the path I would say that Time Curry would suffice!

I would like to see Andy Serkis be the voice of Blaine the train, I think he would be great. he's got that craziness that a actor needs. yes that's the guy who plays Gollum in the lord of the rings. but he's got such a strange vocal range. I just watched the trailer for his new film, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll looks really good and for some odd reason Blaine the train popped in my head.

A lot of great ideas up there, including making it King's cameo. Curry, Spacey, Williams... how about Brent Spiner? Whoever's voice got used would have to be digitally filtered. It should sound cold and mechanical when not getting angry.

You know how NYC taxis play recorded messages by celebrities? Well - it would be a total departure from the book, but what do you think about doing that with Blaine? In that case, I'd say go with someone incongruous to the character, like Christopher Walken, Pee Wee Herman or maybe even a female voice, like Barbara Walters or Rachel Ray.

In my minds eye there is no way the voice of Blaine could never have been a woman.I am afraid Robbin Williams would be over the top.Adam Sandler is not my favorite ,but he would be a good little Blaine.Jim Carey is great at insane but i could not see do the serious parts.I think kevin Spacey would be the one to really nail it. Would be perfect. His voice is scary when he's mad. He conveys contempt so well with his voice.

Right now I would make a great voice for Blaine (terrible head cold makes me sound like a raspy man).

I think Jeff Goldblum could do a great job. He can master sultry or crazy or angry or genius.

Bryan James

Kelsey Grammer or his brother on "Frasier."

Did I already post that? If not then, yes. Otherwise, George Bush...both of them, harmonized by a minor 5th.

I never get Blaine down to just one voice, and it usually changes from reading to reading, even from line to line. Whenever he does John Wayne or whoever, I don't imagine someone doing an impression, I just imagine John Wayne's actual voice. I mean, he is a pretty darned sophisticated machine, he could probably get those impressions down to the point where it sounds exactly like them. I think it'd be neat, if they ever did some kind of movie, to have several voice actors for Blaine for each of his moods and impressions. For the impressions, just get someone who is really good at that particular impression, for the funny Blaine, someone like Jim Carrey or Michael Keaton (a la Beetlejuice), for introspective Blaine someone like Kevin Spacey, and angry/threatening Blaine...I'm still not sure about. I always hear a deep booming voice like Orson Welles' Unicron, but I've never liked that. I could never hear that voice just right.

How about Stephen King. He usually does cameos in his films and this would be good. His voice isn't bad and not many people would recognize it.
