It would have to be made as an animated movie for me, because the whole "storybook" feel would just go along with an animated movie. But I would still keep every bit of the story in tact and not edit it for violence and such.

I read this book back in 88\89 IIRC got it as a freebie off of Futura books when I was working for them. Movie, nah. Mini-series maybe :) Think I'll have to read it again just to remind myself fully of the story as I can only remember little bits. I think that a lot of King books suffer when made into movies and the mini-series fairs much better IMO :eek2:

Yes. You MUST read it! It's great. You'll love it, I promise.:biggrin2:
It's told like a fairy tale. Flagg has a major role in this one. It's DT related.
Need any other reasons? I do have more, but I'll restrain myself.:biggrin2:

Huge agreement here! I think it would fare better than most SK books in movie form; it just feels a bit shorter. I love this book so much and have been trying to get my husband to read it.

This would make a fantastic movie. Surprised it hasn't been done actually. I think it could work as a regular length movie because the book isn't overly long. No animation tho please as it would be tainted down and it still needs to have an R rating.

I would like to see almost all of SK's stories on the screen, I don't have near enough stuff to gripe about these days.
It's funny how I'll rush to a movie based on a SK story, then this usually mild mannered movie goer turns into the world's most hardcore critic.
Who ever sees the movie with me had best be prepared to listen to a list of what they did wrong when it's over, and what wasn't in the book or what actor was totally wrong for the part or who should have directed it if I don't like it, and if I do they had best be prepared to stay and watch it again with me LOL.
I love Eyes of the Dragon and hope that if they ever do make it into a movie that they take care to stick to the story as it was written.
So do my friends that go to the movies with me. :smile2:

Several years ago the film rights were sold for this novel to be adapted as an animated project but the production company never completed the film. I believe the rights have since expired for that project but would be available to produce by someone else.

Eyes of the Dragon is by far my favorite SK book. (Yeah, I'll catch heck for that since it's one of his lesser known) I worry about making it into a real movie. Dragon movies are critiqued pretty drastically. It has to be amazing to pull it off. I feel it deserves better than a SCI-FI miniseries, but I would love to see it myself.

I think it would be great if it was made into a movie. I think it would be cool if it was done in Japanese animie style. Japanese animation is so much more "mature" and the violence could stay.
I also think that Eyes of the Dragon should be made into a graphic novel and comic series! (like the Dark Tower and The Talisman)

Hi,

Yes, in an animated movie form.

IMO, it is the only way it would be able to capture the right feeling of magic, fantasy and the dreaded Flagg. :wow:

I've wished for this movie for at least 15 years... Suggestions for people I'd like to see write/direct/produce:

M. Night Shyamalan

Peter Jackson

Guillermo Del Toro (Pans Labrinth)

I'd love to see it live-action with some CGI... Hmm... I'm thinking it's about time to re-read it!! (4th go-round) :biggrin2:

GOOD idea... I'd love to see it, kind of in the same dark, children story but not quite right for kids style of Lord of the Ring or The Good Son. That's a film I'd love to watch!

I'm re-reading it right now! I'd really much rather see it in live-action than animation... I've been pondering on who could play Peter...

I would like it to be made into a live action film. It doesn't have to be rated R, PG13 would be fine so that I could take the kids to see it. Also, I'd rather it not be animated or a miniseries. I disagree with the person who mentioned the japanese animation. I am not too fond of that style. What ever was done though, I would watch, and pay to see it.

I just finished reading it and loved it! It's my second favorite King book. It unfolded in my mind so effortlessly, much like a movie. It'll make an excellent movie in the right hands. Peter Jackson, perhaps?

Yes....it should be made into a movie..BUT...I don't want it to be a disappointment when it comes to casting.....Movies from Kings novels tend to be either a complete hit...or a sorry miss! Personally I've not seen a good stephen king novel based movie on the big screen since Misery.

It would make an excellent movie...if done properly. Some (well, most actually) of his books that were adapted to movies weren't very good. This book, made into a movie, would make Harry Potter look like the gibberish it is.

It would be great to see this on the big screen, as a wake up call to all those who see King as being purely a purveyor of cheap horror ;)

I'm always nervous of any film adaptations though, there have been so many real 'horrors' made of his books already :(

Hi,

Agreed.

And both directed (as is The Mist) by Frank Darabont, who also apparently has the option on The Long Walk too.

And Frank is currently in charge of the absolutely excellent AMC series The Walking Dead (FX channel in the UK).

Ooh! Interesting bit of info there! "The Mist" is also one my favorite adaptations...

Hmm... Didn't know about a series on AMC, I'll have to check that out...

So, it seems to me that Frank Darabont would be an excellent choice (in addition to some of the directors I mentioned earlier in the thread) for an adaptation of "Eyes of the Dragon". I really would *so* love to see this on screen... ~sigh~

Thanks again for info!
~goes off to look up the AMC series~

I have to agree. I think it would stand up the best as an animated film, so long as it is not edited for violence :). But I would absolutely love to see this made.

I'm pretty sure that there was a deal in the works to have The Eyes of the Dragon made into an animated film several years ago... obviously something fell through with it. Would love to see it made into something with special effects like the Narnia or Harry Potter stories...

Agreed... A fantasy/fairy tale such as Eyes of the Dragon would be perfect for a production similar to the Narnia or Harry Potter series... I'll keep wishing for it!

If The Dark Tower is King's Lord of the Rings then Eyes of the Dragon is his Hobbit. Maybe after they finish with all the DT movies and TV series they'll get to work on EotD? And hopefully they won't have all the production drama that The Hobbit has been going through. lol

Sho Nuff! This would make a great movie. I think doing it in cgi would really do justice to the fairy tale personality of the book. Beowolf comes to mind, but a little more serious and scary.

I really enjoyed Beowulf, thought the CGI was fantastic... But myself personally, I'd still love to see Eyes of the Dragon in live action with some CGI effects... I'm thinking along the lines of 'Lady In The Water', 'The Fall', 'Pans Labyrinth', 'Golden Compass' and the 'Narnia' series and such... :smile2:

I haven't read this book in about 15-20 years, but from what I remember I think it would translate into a better movie than most of his other works.

I think this film - my favorite as a child when I was recovering from taking It on too early - would translate beautifully to film. A lot have made the suggestion of it being an animated feature, and I think the story would do well either way - perhaps as a tie-in to link to the massive DT project, and hook some younger viewers/readers. Lucky the world of fantasy has done so well in the movie theaters lately - with the Potter and Narnia successes, imagine what this title, a fairly kid-friendly fantasy with the name Stephen King attached, could do!

Written as it was for children, it is already colourful, vivid, descriptive and fun. Has straightforward good characters (hurrah!) and bad characters (boo!), and an easy to follow plot. It should be either a panto or a childrens film....(fun, if slightly lightweight read)
