I know its a different Genre but I am a fan of John Grishams you know, The Firm, A time to kill, The Chamber etc... I just finished reading his latest, the Associate, excellent reading on the same lines of the Firm only more mysterious because this time he is blackmailed into working at a big law firm to steal their secrets. A must read.

I've read several Grisham books but what is even better is listening to them on tape.

I am a Grisham fan as well. A Time To Kill is a favorite. But I really enjoyed A Painted House more than the others I've read of his. Probably my least favorite was Innocent Man or Bleachers. I think he can develop characters in detail similar to King, and that is why I am a fan of both. You live inside the books when you read them.

Yeah, I just read The Associate and I liked it too. Being a new young lawyer would suck! My favorite is A Time to Kill.:smile2:

I read him frequently during high school. A Time to Kill was one of my favorites! I recently read Playing for Pizza, and found it really interesting, especially since it was not based on the legal system. He has several tricks up his sleeve!

I own The Associate, but I am not a Grisham fan. I guess I'll eventually get around to reading it, but for now I'll put it off for as long as possible. I read A Painted House and The Runaway Jury, both of which I thought were mediocre. I take that back on A Painted House - I thought that one was pretty bad.

I used to love John Grisham, not so much anymore.

The Rainmaker is one of my favorites, and of course, A Time to Kill.
I listened to the Terrance Mann reading of The Last Juror, a newer Grisham, and I didn't think it was that great...

Innocent man was dark but mainly because it was based on a true story. It really happend.

I do.

Nothing wrong with John, IMO.

Good writer for his genre.

I've read three Grisham novels, and I was not impressed with any of them. I don't find his writing style "believable"...just the way Grisham puts the words together, I'm just not convinced in my mind about what I'm reading. It's like you can see the characters are just his puppets and you can definitely see the strings as he pulls them. When I read "The Street Lawyer" I was extremely disappointed with the main character. I've worked with D.C. lawyers, and this guy was not your typical D.C. lawyer. Nothing short of God Himself appearing and blowing the guy's mind wide open would make a D.C. attorney give up his $1,000 an hour partner's position at the firm's Pennsylvania address. Another part of the book had the main firm under some sort of scrutiny, and Grisham describes the entire firm of a few hundred people huddling behind their doors plotting strategy. In a large firm like the one portrayed in the book, you'd be lucky to even know who worked on another floor. And if the problem this firm was dealing with was that bad as Grisham would have us believe, then only the senior partners or even just the firm owner himself of herself would know about it. A last item, on one page of "Street Lawyer" Grisham had the main character "driving the beltway during his lunch hour" just to collect his thoughts. Has Grisham even stepped foot in D.C.? It would take the guy almost half an hour itself to get from downtown to the beltway, and then you don't "drive the beltway" during the work week in D.C. You go for a few miles, and then it's stop and go, especially between New Carrollton and the 270 splits on the north side. All in all just very unbelievable. Same with the other books I read and can't even remember the titles of nor the synopses because of the lack of impact they had on me. Seriously doubt I will ever step up to the plate for a fourth try...

How can you not! He's terrific storyteller. And, funnily enough, I probably like 'A Painted House' the best. Hey, I'm old.

The Client was the first Grisham book I ever read. I loved it, and I've hit him up a couple times since. His recent stuff doesn't do anything for me, but I love his older works. I agree with what one of the other posters said, his characters are sometimes nearly as deep and complex as King's.

Sometimes...

I also like John Grisham. When he is good, he is very good. Some books are weak in places, but I would never turn my nose up to one of his books until I have read it.

I tend to stay away from legal fiction (I don't recall ever cracking the spine of a Turow book), but I've read most of Grisham's stuff.

I liked "King of Torts," but I really enjoyed "Ford County," his first collection of shorts.

I didn't mean for that to rhyme.

Pat, I had the same feeling. It's our dear Mary, I thought, when I saw her avatar. She is most missed.

I find Grisham novels to be easy, fun reading. I love the Clanton stuff, as I like recurring characters. Harry Rex Vonner is on my favorite supporting character list.

One of my favorite books of all time is The Rainmaker. The book has some of the best comedy in it that I've read in a while. The movie was good, but it doesn't convey the fact that this book was very funny, too. I've also read The Firm. Good book and very different from the movie, but the movie was better in some aspects. At least that what I think. Those are the only two I've read. I tried to read The Partner, but after one hundred pages it became just too dull for me. In my collection I also have The Runaway Jury, The Pelican Brief, and The Street Lawyer. I doubt I'll read them soon, but maybe eventually.

I've read quite a bit of John Grisham and have really enjoyed it.

Like others others here, one of my favaurites is A Time to Kill but, to those who haven't read it, I'd definitely recommend The Broker.
