I watched the re-make, or prequel, if you prefer, of John Carpenter's, "The Thing" last weekend. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. The new directors did a good job of capturing the feeling of paranoia that made the 1982 version so good. Special effects were good, all in all, not as bad a remake as I thought it would be.

I watched Bel Ami (2012). It was pretty good, I loved the story, I liked the actors, they did a great job. Also watched Titanic in 3D, and I can say that it is the most impressive movie ever, in 3D it is even better.

Contraband - OK action/suspense/thriller
The Hunger Games - satirical action adventure with food for thought
The Devil Inside - found footage exorcism movie: no surprises, some good performances
The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists! - wonderful comedy animation from Aardman (Wallace & Gromit)
Act Of Valor - military action - action sequences good, acting very very bad
Mirror Mirror: The Untold Adventures Of Snow White - charming, delightful, gently subversive
Wrath Of The Titans - massive CGI mayhem surrounds Sam Worthington at his most wooden
StreetDance 2 - people leaping about in 3D

I watched Titanic on Saturday. I've seen that movie 11 years ago and because it was 100 years ago since the ship sink
thought it's a perfect time for a re-watch. And watched the same movie yesterday again when it came on TV, there wasn't anything else to
watch anyway. It's a sad story because you know it's a true story and even if it was a movie I almost start to cry because I
felt sorry for those people who freeze to death in that cold water and for those who scream that lifeboat's should came back and
pick them up. But love the movie at the same time.

The Beguiled (1971) - Probably the single most underrated Clint Eastwood movie. Excellent Gothic horror movie.
Rebel Without A Cause (1955) - You would have thought that, being a bit of a movie snob, I would have seen this movie sometime before the day before yesterday. But better late than never. :biggrin2:

In Harm's Way (1965) - Another notch in my goal to watch as many John Wayne movies as humanly possible. :biggrin2: Great cast and a great movie.
The Eiger Sanction (1975) - Minimal special effects, hokey spy story line, and Clint Eastwood climbing a big ole mountain when he isn't chasing around good-looking women. Yup, I loved it. :y:

I'll be seeing The Avengers later on this month with a couple of friends. Even though I'm more of a DC guy it should be fun. We'll be doing a movie marathon first because I haven't seen most of those movies. Just The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, I think.

Anyway, I recently watched Eddie Murphy's RAW and then Delirious on YouTube. Back when he was actually funny and wearing weird 80's Michael Jackson-esque clothes.

American Pie Reunion. It was just as juvenile as I hoped, and I laughed a lot! My friends have been joking that I will be like Stiflers Mom when I'm older. Which I was quite offended at since I don't have kids, so they changed it to Stiflers Aunty instead which is soooo much cooler. :cool2:

Though nothing new, I have watched Intruders which stars Clive Owen just over the weekend. It is a nice movie though nothing fascinating and really paunchy with it. People could relate to it which would be how they would probably like it but there are a lot of similar thriller movies that actually do a better job at it. You could get lost into a few turns with it as well.

The family saw Dark Shadows over the weekend. I thought it was fair. I'm not a big Tim Burton fan. The movie manages to cover a lot of the old series plot without huge variances, and throws in some humor here and there. My wife, who started watching DShadows on Netflix a couple of years ago, didn't care for it. She wanted a true horror flick or comedy, but felt like she got neither. Our kids, who are home for the summer from college, seemed to like it.

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen - would-be quirky romantic comedy: not wholly successful
Headhunters - excellent Norwegian crime suspense thriller (subtitled)
American Reunion - the usual smutty nonsense
Silent House - interesting exercise in one-take scary suspense
Tangled Ever After 3D - wonderful short, follow up to the feature
Beauty And The Beast 3D - great fil, 3D conversion not so much
Safe - OK action thriller with Jason Statham

Dark Shadows. I expected it to be better. I thought that it was going to be a comedy, but really it was not so much of it. The Mirror Has Two Faces, with Jeff Bridges and Barbra Streisand, a very good, very well-acted movie. I've been a serious Jeff Bridges fan since Starman (a brilliant, Oscar-nominated performance), but not a Streisand fan before. She's really good in this (plus she directed it). I liked the movie a whole lot more than I expected to.

I agree with you Rebecca. I've many times be disappointed because some scary movies have been to bad to watch. In the 70s and 80s
they did many very good horror movies and I watch them instead. They just can't do any good scary movies in these days anymore.

I caught a "B" horror flick that was filmed in my neck of the woods here in Arkansas. It's called "Madison County". That is one county east of where I live and its a great county for river fishing. It's very rural and the movie reminded me of a "Wrong Turn" meets "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" mixture. It wasn't that bad being as I got lost once in the town the movie is set in "Oark", I didn't think the movie was half bad. Check it out if you get a chance, nothing ground breaking about the movie, but if you know our sports team mascot here in Arkansas, the "Razorback", the main bad guy character will crack you up.

Last night we went to see Snow White and The Huntsman, and surprisingly I loved it! I was dubious since I really can't take Kristen Stewart seriously after the Twilight franchise, but the movie didn't rely on her performance to hold it together. I believe she was actually acted off the screen by everybody. Stewart's performance was passable but I think she was hired so the directors could cash in on the Twilight fans who will pay to see her. Kerching!! Overall I'd recommend the movie. :y: :y:

Not a movie but I have been watching the entire series of Weeds on dvd. I'm up to season 6 now. I had previously watched through season 5 on showtime a few years back but I don't get Showtime anymore so I missed the last couple of seasons. So a few weeks ago, I started renting the dvds from the beginning and am planning on going through to the end of season 7. The first 3 seasons when the family is still in Agrestic are the best. The series seems to get a little darker each season. It's still good but the first 3 are hilarious. There are some great funny characters, particularly Celia played by Elizabeth Perkins.

If you are a fan of the original, rent it..they did a very good job of reinventing the sense of isolation and claustrophobia the characters were faced with.As with anything it was not perfect, but man I loved the nods subtle and not so subtle to the original..of course it is a little PC'd up with a smarter than every guy heroine who survives some pretty impossible situations,(and of course you ladies out there know you are smarter than us,so no debate there, haha:grinning:)..I think it would have been even better with no english, just subtitles..How do you scream in Swedish?(or was it Danish,:oo:)..anyhow, perhaps from the ending, the Russkies may have a little surprise heading their way..and this lobster, you don't eat,it eats you..:eek2:

Madagascar 3. Nice cartoon. I do not think there is a need to say something else - a good cartoon, a great way to entertain a child.

The Woman in Black. I decided to re-watch the movie after reading the book. It is great, I think I will watch it again and again. It is practically the only scary movie I have seen in years.

Sleepy Hollow. One more great Tim Burton movie to see. Johnny Depp is perfect, as always. I have become his true fan, I admire his talent more and more with every movie I see.

Agreed on the last 2 points. Loved the Woman in Black. The ending was perfect. Haven't read the book though.

Also love Sleepy Hollow. Depp's range of acting is unprecedented. Sleepy Hollow to Blow to Pirates of the Caribbean to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Blow to Alice in Wonderland to Sweeney Todd. The list goes on and on. But wow.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation aka get The Gringo - unpleasant action thriller by an unpleasant man
Dark Shadows - moderately amusing, moderate misfire though
Piranha 3DD - lacks the self awareness of its predecessor, but the Hof is great
What To Expect When You're Expecting - tolerable pregnancy-based multi-thread comedy
The Dictator - tasteless and very funny
The Raid - extremely violent subtitled Thai martial arts movie, very good of its type
Snow White And The Huntsman - great visual imagination, glum delivery
Men In Black 3 - entertaining and engaging revisitation
Top Cat: The Movie - not even very good for kids
Prometheus - pretentious eye candy full of illogicalities, inconsistencies and unanswered questions
Red Tails - allegedly true (but actiually fairly inaccurate) tale of negro fighter squadron in WWII: great visuals, poor script

Depp is fabulous but overexposed. If yer honest and you stick around in one place for too long you end up a parody of yourself in that place. Gotta keep moving, ya know? Stay the same but change the frame. Hustling truth, my friend. Hustling truth. Oh, hello there. More coffee. Two eggs. Over easy. Hashbrowns, undercooked. More starch, less sugar, you get me? I know you do, darling. I can see it in your hearing aid. Maybe today is a bacon day, I'm not sure about that. I'm not sure about a lot of things. Surprise me.

The Conversation (1974) - Every once in a while I encounter a film that I know I should have seen long before the first time I actually sat down to watch it. This is one of those films for me. Absolutely outstanding. I hear that the movie Enemy of the State is some sort of sequel, but I don't see much resemblance. Enemy of the State is a thrill-a-minute (and generic) chase movie whereas The Conversation is a very psychological and slow-moving (and I mean that in a good way) descent into paranoia.

But it is interesting to see the similarities between both of Hackman's characters.

The Tower Heist - not great but not too bad either. It is actually a heist movie. I kind of thought it was going to be a comedy. The first half is more comedy and the second half is a heist movie. Nice to see Eddie Murphy is something half decent.

The Sitter - Sort of a rip off of "Adventures in Babysitting." except this is strictly adult fare. Has it's moments but is disappointing considering Jonah Hill is in it.

As far as Jacob's post above, if you haven't seen "The Conversation," you must seek it out and watch it. A great flick.:y:

We watched the Fright Night remake last night. I thought it was decent, but I still prefer the original. Chris Sarandon was just the perfect blend of sexy and scary in the original, Colin Farrell did a pretty good job, but just didn't seem quite able to be as menacing as Sarandon was, with just a simple look and a smirk. I loved the little cameo part Chris Sarandon had, it was a nice nod.

Rock Of Ages - entertaining music nonsense
The Pact - atmospheric suspense horror which finally makes no sense
Red Lights - doesn't bear serious examination, but a fun ride
Fast Girls - Rocky, only English sprinting girls instead of boxing
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - presposterous romp
The Five-Year Engagement - the five-year rom-com (it just feels like it at times)
Lay The Favourite - entertaing but confusing gambling movie
Chernobyl Diaries - predictable horror
Friends With Kids - foul-mouthed romcom about people I didn't care about
The Amazing Spider-Man - OK but unnecessary reboot

The Searchers (1956) - Excellent John Ford / John Wayne western. It is unusually dark for a 1956 movie and it deals with deals with racism in a truthful way (quite a feat for 1956). I think this is one of John Wayne's finest performances as he straddles a fine line between hero and villain. It's out on blu-ray and the John Ford landscapes are gorgeous.

I saw this on the blu-ray version and there is a documentary on the disc with Martin Scorsese talking about the film. He mentioned that the film was shot in "Vista Vision" which they don't use anymore. The unique feature of "Vista Vision" is that you can have close ups and long shots in focus at the same time in the same shot. If you watch this movie, pay attention to that because it is remarkable looking.

I've been on a Chris Nolan bender, lately. After watching The Dark Knight Rises (one of the best movies I've ever seen, btw) I bought a blu-ray pack of Chris Nolan films. I watched Memento and, man oh man, what an amazing movie. It is a tripped out movie told in reverse chronological order about a guy with short term memory loss. Excellent flick. Some people might not be able to keep up with it or might not like the way the story is told, but I LOVED it.

I figure that next up is Inception. I still haven't seen it yet.

Then I'll have to track down Following because it didn't come in the blu-ray movie pack.

Ides of March - An excellent movie starring Ryan Gosling and George Clooney about the extreme cut-throat nature of running a political campaign. Give this movie a chance because in the first 15 minutes or so, you may think you are going to be subjected to a ideological movie but it's not that at all. It is about the inner workings of two campaign staffs that have candidates running for President. I think the filmmakers did a very smart thing here and made both candidates from the same party running in the primaries. If they would have made one candidate a Democrat and one a Republican running for President, then there would have been complaints about the film leaning one way or the other. By being candidates from the same party, that's not an issue.

I'm not sure why his character in this movie had to leave the town at the end. He was forgiven for what he did, they needed some muscle why not stay? The project fell victim to some internal politics and one of the architects was exiled, but the buildings remain, in various states of completion, and in various states of use. Fascinating story, and renewed my lust to spend some more time in Havana.

Blu-ray of The Deer Hunter (1978) - I saw this movie in the theaters when it came out (I was 17 or 18) and I don't think I've seen it since in it's entirety (probably seen bits and pieces on cable over the years). I'd forgotten how great this was.

This is an awesome and really hard to take movie. It's very long (3 hours) and it is done in three acts. The three acts could almost stand alone as separate movies. Most Vietnam war movies deal primarily with the horrors of war but this movie is different because it's main focus is on the damage done at home to the friends and family of the soldiers. Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep are all great particularly Christopher Walken.

The blu-ray looks great except for some places where some real news footage was inserted into the movie (like the fall of Saigon). That footage doesn't match the rest of the film very well.

New York, New York (1977) directed by Martin Scorsese

I love Martin Scorsese movies but I have avoided this one all these years because I don't like musicals and this movie did poorly when it was released and it doesn't seem to have much of a following. I think this may be the only major Scorsese movie I had not seen. I decided to bite the bullet and watch this and I'm glad I did, it was fantastic. Be warned though, it's a downbeat movie and the Robert DeNiro character is about as unlikable as any character he has ever played that doesn't kill people. Scorsese wanted to give the film a 40's musical look so there is a lot of painted backgrounds that look fake but very cool (and they look fake on purpose). I have to say that Liza's kind of music is not my style but she was amazing and her New York New York final scene will blow you away. I should have known better than to doubt Martin Scorsese.

By the way, I was curious about the song, "New York, New York" and if it was written for the movie or not since the Sinatra version is the one I've always heard. I did a little research and found out that the song was written specifically for this movie so Liza's version is the real thing.

The Mikado (1939).
A Gilbert & Sullivan play done as a movie. Surprisingly funny at times but the audio during the songs was a bit shrill and hard to understand.

The Possession. You can watch the movie once, but I do not think that I will ever watch it again. It is neither good nor bad, but it is rather slow, and not scary at all.

The Apparition. Same here :) I expected it to be much better, and I was a bit disappointed. Still, I think it is okay to watch the movie once.

Brian's Song on netflix. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. This movie touched me the first time I saw it as a kid, and it did again last night. I guess because it deals with friendship and football. It also may have been the first time, as a child, I understood death could take the strong as well as the weak, at anytime, for any reason. It also dealt a little with racism. Which as a white child growing up in the 70's in a small mountain town in the south didn't seem to exist. I'm sure their were some versions of it in play, but nothing obvious as would be spotted by a child. My parents had black friends, I went to school with and had black friends, played sports with black teammates, etc.. Thinking back, dating would have still have been considered taboo at the time in that small community, by both blacks (at least as represented by the thoughts of my childhood black friends) and whites. Good movie.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) James Bond flick

The Bond films have recently been restored and special editions have been put on dvd and blu-ray. I decided to rent and watch them in order (one every couple of weeks). Not all are on blu-ray but most are. First of all, the newly restored versions of the older flicks like Dr. No look absolutely fantastic (of course anything with Ursula Anders in it is bound to look fantastic). Anyway, I got to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and wasn't really expecting this one to be all that good. This is the one that has a Bond, George Lazenby that no one seems to like and I've never really heard anyone say good things about this film. I watched it last night and I loved it. Now, George Lazenby is no Sean Connery (who is?) but he wasn't bad. To be fair, no one can touch Sean Connery as Bond. The actual movie has a great action packed story and Telly Savalas is excellent as the villain, Blofeld. This movie is different from the other Bond flicks with James Bond actually falling in love with one of the beauties. The movie has a much different kind of ending than any other Bond film too. Anyway, if you've never seen it, it is really worth renting.

Bought the blu-ray of Titanic yesterday and watched a couple of the new documentaries with James Cameron talking with experts and members of the Titanic board, trying to figure out exactly (we'll really never know for sure) how she sank, mostly about what happened to her after she went under. Looks like Cameron got a couple things wrong, such as the angle that the ship rose up after she started taking on water. But, mind you, his film was done before the much-needed technology we have today was there. Looks like it didn't go straight up as shown in the film, but it did (obviously) break apart, but in a slightly different area than was shown in his film. Small quibbles. It's pretty chilling to see what they think happened, which they show in 3-D computer graphics. Can't imagine what it would have been like to be alive, inside her when she was sinking. Brrrr!!!! I have Thursday and Friday off and will be watching the film one of those nights, probably tomorrow night!! Should be amazing on blu-ray! Yes, it may be a 'cheesy' love story (as Cameron says- it's Romeo and Juliet on Titanic!) but it's a damn fine film in it's own right.

The Incredibles. Again. Must've been the umpteenth time, sounds about right. I just love it. One of the best written, best directed movies--not just animated movies--I've ever seen. Holly Hunter, Craig T Nelson, and Jason Lee are wonderful. The animation is fascinating and was totally unique for its time. They play it like a Bond movie including a Bond-type score. I've always considered it my second favorite James Bond movie after Goldfinger.

I just watched this great little indie horror from Australia called The Tunnel. Great for a cheap fright, it's presented like a documentary that uses footage from news crew who go off the radar looking for a story in the sewers underneath Sydney. Instead, the story finds them. Some heart-stopping moments, sound effects are fantastic, it's the best Blair Witch-style film I've seen. It's free, you can watch the whole movie on youtube.

Hi All,
I'm brand-new to this site, so please forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place. I searched the thread titles and saw this one.
The last Stephen King movie I've watched is: Creepshow. Man, I hadn't seen this one in YEARS!! I forgot how creepy and also how funny it was! The movie is a collection of short stories and there's one called: The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, this one stars Stephen King himself! Boy, is he HILARIOUS in this one!! If you haven't seen it, or it has been awhile, do yourself a favor and watch it.
Thanks to all of you that post great things out there, it's been some enjoyable reading.

Diamonds Are Forever (1971) - James Bond flick

Not bad but a disappointment. Definitely the weakest of the Sean Connery era Bond films. Connery had retired from the Bond series after the 1967 film, You Only Live Twice. The filmmakers coaxed a reluctant Connery out of Bond retirement by offering him a huge amount of money (2 million dollars, which at the time was unheard of) to do this film. Connery just doesn't give as good a performance as in the other films.

It's an age old lesson that no one ever seems to learn. Talking someone into doing something they don't want to do never works well.

Anyway here are my rankings of the Sean Connery era Bond films (1-4 are really close and I could easily swap positions on those 4):

1. Thunderball (1965)
2. Goldfinger (1964)
3. From Russia With Love (1963)
4. Dr. No (1962)
5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (George Lazenby as Bond) (1969)
6. You Only Live Twice (1967)
7. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

Sinister! One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It didn't scare me--movies don't--but I understand why people do find it creepy. I like that it doesn't rely on gore to shock. The "jump out of your seat" parts are gradually built up so you expect something to happen, and when it does the effect is powerful enough to still make people jump, unlike those silly movies that create unexpected jumps that you forget about within minutes. This movie has a decent storyline and great acting...I will buy the DVD when it's released.

I was able to follow the film crew around for a couple of weeks while they filmed the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me in the Fall City area. I got to meet Sheryl Lee (she was so sweet!), David Lynch, Ray Wise, Grace Zabriski, Moira Kelly, Francis Bay (the 'creamed corn lady') and the little creepy boy with her, Dana Ashbrook, the guy that played James, Wendy Robie, the gal that played the giggling waitress (her part was cut from the finished film), Katherin Coulson, and Killer Bob (!!! really a nice guy!!!) and Kyle MacLaughlin's brother, who was a member of the film crew. Got lots of funny and strange stories to tell about the experience- like creeping thru the woods to the train car where they were filming Laura's murder. Apparently the 'official' photos taken on set while filming have been lost, so it looks like I may have some of the only pics out there to prove that there really are scenes that were filmed but never made it into the final film (except the over-three-hour version shown at Cannes). Wish Lynch would get it together and put out a dvd edition that at least has these scenes included in the 'extras' section, they deserve to be seen by the fans of this show. Alot of them are humorous, which would detract from the films grim message- drugs are BAD!

Unfortunately PA4 is a terrible movie, the story is ridiculous, it doesn't make sense or provide any answers. Shawshank was released on blu-ray recently so I re-read the story and then watched the movie last night. The movie is still awesome and Frank Darabont's adaptation of the novella is superb. He only changed a few things and captured the spirit of SK's story beautifully. Frank should really not be allowed to do anything but SK adaptations.:grinning: Every one he has done has been excellent.

The blu-ray is loaded with extras like a director commentary and featurettes on the making of the movie and interviews with cast members, etc. It's an excellent edition and highly recommended by me.

1. LOL (2012). Very nice family movie, nothing great, but good to have some fun.
2. Snow White and the Huntsman. The movie is not bad, a nice fairy-tale, though, I should agree, they should not have chosen Kristen Stewart for this movie, she was not good for it.
3. Dark Shadows. This movie disappointed me when I first saw it in the theater, and I am still of the opinion that there is something missing in the movie. The actors are amazing, the plot is great...everything seems to be fine, But still, till the very end it is not clear what we are watching - a comedy, a drama, or, maybe, a thriller. The genre is not clear. It is a pity, because the movie had all chnces to be really great.
