The Giver by Lois Lowry has won the John Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. While my son read this book in grade 8, he got me to purchase it as he said it was one of the best books he has ever read. (he does read a lot too.) It is a book about balancing the values of freedom and security. A very good read, for young and old.

Hi, I read it a while ago. I flew through it in a day, it's fairly short, but a pretty good read. If you have a day to spare, I too, would recommend this book.

It is a great book. At the time I was reading it, it had been banned in some schools here. It is a little disturbing for kids, I guess, but I think the literary value far outweighs anything else. It did win the Newbery after all ... can't be all that harmful. :wink2:

I haven't read this in such a long time, but I will never forget the sledding incident.. OUCH This, Island of the Blue Dolphin, and the Westing Game were always my favorite middle school reads!

I read this last fall, I thought it was pretty good. I don't think it's been read by my children's school, too bad though, my son would have loved it, I don't know about my daughter.

I read it last year in 8th grade for my Advanced English class, and it was okay. Though I remember my friends and I making plenty of jokes about "stirrings" and the sort. It made class entertaining.

Yep, I read it when I was in Elementary School, then again in Middle School (within a class this time). I must admit that it was one of the better reads I've ever had the pleasure to experience (even though it is a children's book). To anyone who doesn't mind reading young adult fiction - I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

Yeah, all of my friends continue to make jokes about the stirrings.

I loved this book when I was a kid, and I've found that re-reading the books I enjoyed most growing up presents an entirely new experience.
