20 years later...

I recently pulled out my copy of "The Dark Half", which I had bought and read twenty years ago, and at that time the story just didn't hit it off with me. After reading it again I enjoyed the story a little more, but I hate to say it's still not one of my favorite SK novels. Please share your stories of whether you've pulled out an SK novel from many years past and read it again, and what if any changes, positive or negative, you felt about the book. Thanks very much...

I have one book of Mr. King's that I could not get into but it remains on the bookshelf until it is a better time. I had been told by the bookstore this was Mr. King's best ever but I could not get past the first 100 pages.!! This had never happened to me before, not with Mr. King. Not a good time for that story, I guess. But it waits all dressed up in its pristine jacket for me....:smile2:

I've mentioned this before in another post.. but Christine had that effect for me - a bit of a love/loathe relationship. But the more often I read it the more I come to accept it and appreciate the magic within it.

Hi there, well i have re-read a few stories but only because i enjoyed them so much the first time round...so for me i guess my re-reads are always positive.
My favourite to re-read is 'IT', everytime i feel like i am reading it for the first time as there is so much detail in the story.

I actually enjoyed 'The Dark Half', i felt the conflict of character between Thad and George was well written. Anyway, so what SK stories do you enjoy?

That's a great question.

I've read The Stand several times over 30 years and it gets better each time. It remains my favorite novel. When I was younger, I enjoyed the action. Now, I appreciate the unparalleled (IMO) description of the human spirit by SK. The characters are robust and lasting. I didn't appreciate that the first time around.

And another... Cell was better for me the second time around. On the second reading, I noted many similarities to The Stand.

Re-reading is a must for me. I tend to fly through a first reading. Re-reads help me to pick up the nuances. And with an author like SK who ties so many works together, there are often subtle hints that are overlooked the first time.

I read Carrie a long time ago and didn't care for it. I thought the newspaper articles combined with the prose was quite choppy. Maybe I'll give it another spin.

I need to reread Cell, Lisey and Tom Gordon...those books did not have a very big impact on me at all...
Maybe that will change the second time around...

Same here, Brad. I devour books the first time around, then go back a year or so later and it's like finding love all over again!

I've started The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon three times and never made it past the middle, the only Sai King book I've never finished.

I also didn't like Gerald's Game when it came out (must re-read it soon), or From a Buick 8 (but it improved a lot on a re-read).

I'm re-reading The Dark Half at the moment myself, and I think it's a great book, and Sai King's mention of Richard Bachman at the beginning seems very valid IMO.

I have read many of his books again but as I liked them so much in the first place I suppose its not relevant to this thread.............

One book I didnt take to was "Needful things".........the story was fabulous to a certain point and then it was like he just "lost it" (just in my opinion)..........and the end was a big disappointment.

I got it out a few years ago and tried again - and sad to say I didnt feel any differently about it!
