View Full Version : Dark Tower - I'm avoiding reading the last book!!

I am trying to figure out why I am avoiding reading it (have got to the spot popping, pus sucking part so far. How YUCK!!!!) and have come up with the following reasons (although I think they are really excuses?)
(trying to avoid spoilers so if the mods think there is one here please cover it up for me? Thankee in anticipation.)
1. There is not another book! Normally you finish an SK book, love it and wait desperately for the next. There is NO next book in the DT series!
2. I think people are going to die. I don't want this to happen as I have become so attached to them I know I will be devastated! Avoiding reading the book means I avoid it from happening!
3. I have been working really long hours for 3 months (average 16 hour days for gods sake!) and I am usually too knackered to put the attention deserved into the book. I hate reading a chapter or 2 then falling asleep and then having to re-read the same bloody chapters the next time just to remember where I was!
Has anybody else ever done this? This is the first time I have avoided ANY book and the fact that it is an SK book is freaking me out! :eek2:
Thanks for any input received.

I absolutely loved the last book. Yeah there's gonna happen some bad stuff, but also some beautiful written sections. I enjoyed the ending also.
It's your choice but I wouldn't stand it if I didn't read the ending of a saga.

I think that if you have been gripped by the first 6 books then as sure as night follows day the 7th and final instalment of DT must be read.
De-tatch yourself from the fiction but immerse yourself in the story that way when a character pops his or her (or it's) proverbial clogs the loss is less.
Having not read (or listened to DT yet) I cant comment or slip up with spoilers but I'm sure that once finished you'll re-read all seven again.
I myself find very little time to read but I do have plenty of time to listen to audio books, maybe if your work allows the use of personal mp3 players you could try this.

Try to hang in there. I shared your anticipation about what was to come when I read #7. That's part of the fun, though. After all, the joy for me of the series was the journey itself.
You've come too far not to continue. Even if you only have the energy to read 5-10 pages a night, you'll pick up steam eventually as the tale reaches its conclusion. You won't regret it!
Good luck!

Hi Wendybird,
I can't understand, why you are so disappoint about the end of this story?
The end is very good, than you can read the first book now. The dark Tower
is a never-ending story, that means, you don't have to buy new books, only
the seven. Please, think about my words. I have to go to bed now, it's 03:00
a.m. in Germany, and I must go to work in 4 hours. Bye thor III

Nuff said.
I know I am being ridiculous about this and I will get back to reading soon. BF has just got all of the DT audio books and I am sure that once he starts listening to them I will get jealous and need to finish off book 7.
Still don't want it to end though lol!
Thanks for the kick up the proverbial guys!

Absolutely! I read the DT series 3 times... right up to #7 before stopping dead. The time was never right, I was too busy, I was fearful of what might come to pass, there were other books than these.... but really, it mostly came down to me needing to be ready to move on. You'll know when you are, it'll just feel right. :)

Hi,
Well, need it be finished? No other work benefits from multiple re-reads IMO.
And Ka is a wheel, after all.

Yes,
Good Ol' Dalglish has his hand on the pulse of this query, I think. Fear not, and carry on. Say not "nineteen," and leave the ****in' grass alone for a spell, and do the work. It is its own reward. Selah, and good luck.
Okay,

Hey folks,
This is my first post on here although I have been reading this forum for a while as a guest :P
Wendybird I think I know what you are going through. I have been avoiding reading the last book (although I had a marathon session on Saturday and now only have 200 pages to read!!) and I believe that it is for a number of reasons....
The main one being that I have been travelling with these guys for a good few years and although the journey has sometimes been hard I have come to think of them as my friends (and not in a weird I need to go out more sort of way :)) I have laughed, cried and willed them on their way and I feel that if I finish the book then the journey is over :(
Good luck with finding the time to read let me tell you that you won't be disappointed. :)

The last book was definitely my favorite.
It's a good thing that there are basically 2 endings, a sentimental goodbye to the characters we love (one of the most touching things I've ever read from SK), and then Rolands ending. Uncle Steve gives you the option (and warning) to stop reading after the first ending, and in fact a friend of mine did exactly that, reading the first ending then putting it back on the shelf. I actually had to tell him what became of Roland.
Oddly, I actually felt liberated after finishing book 7. Reading the saga (including the tie-ins that I hadn't already read) consumed basically a year and a half. I loved the books dearly, but it was also nice to be able to move on.

I was sad too when the journey ended, but I was glad to reach the end of the series. It was bitter sweet. But I have all of the Tie-ins to read now. I also bought 2 reference books about the dark tower. I loved the characters so much that I went out and borrowed the DT audio books from the library to 're-live' the adventure. I never stop thinking about the characters in the DT either. They stuck with me. Definately do yourself a favor and finish up the series.

I understand! I've read the series 4 times, but the last book only twice. As much as I love it, I couldn't bring myself to read again the other 2 times!

I have just finished the entire series right up to page 812 of the 7th book. Because of problems with the binding of the book I am in a very unhappy condition while I wait to get another copy.
It will be sad when I reach the end of Dark Tower VII., but, there is no way that I could not finish this book!
Perhaps when you have more time to read would be best, because I could not put the book down.

I never wanted the series to end.

Well the book is currently on the nightstand until I want to get back into it. Going to be too busy this week with the Grand National but I hope to get back into it soon.
Will let you know! :biggrin2:

Hi,
But as DT, more than any work in history IMO, benefits from re-reads, does it truly end? I don't think so.

I felt much as you are, or had been, Wendybird. I didn't want to get into that last book either. That Last Book marked the end of the journey. By leaving that book unread, you think that the tale will continue infinitely.
I humbly beg yer pardon to turn your attention to those pages (DAMN all audio books!! READ it!! If you aren't blind.... READ!), and see what Master King left in them for you.
What you find at the end will either make you smile, or choke back tears. Myself, I did a little of both.
All good tales must have their ends just as our lives end. Or....... :wink2:
I say read it, and enjoy it as much as any of the others. You might even discover something after finishing it.

I read UTD while in hospital and I think it has made me realise that NOT reading the last DT book is a waste of a book! Maybe having an emergency op has made me realise just how silly I have been avoiding the last book. Life is for living and books are for reading!
It is time for me to pick it back up, grit my teeth and just accept that the end is inevitable. I already know that some of my most beloved characters will not finish the journey but that's life
Wish me luck! :grinning:
Thank you all for your patience and words of encouragement since I originally posted this thread. It has taken me months to get to this point but at least I finally got here.

But the last book isn't the last book. There's going to be another one. Wind Through the Keyhole is suppose to take place between book 4 and 5.

Strangely enough, I experienced the same procrastination when I got to DT7. Not a normal reaction for me. I suppose that I did not want closure for these characters or for the story. But as they say, ka is a wheel, and there are no real endings to these tales.
I did finish the book with mixed emotions; the ending made me squirm a bit, but decided that it was appropriate after I thought about it for a while.
(as if SK needs my approval......!)

Yes, it happens to me too with the last book of Dark Tower. I don't know how to explain it. Maybe because is the Last Book. And I feel strange that Roland's and his ka tet's story will end. I feel sad in a way, but fortunatally I have the books If I miss them. I' ll read them again. Anyway, now I read some other books for distraction, but as I see it I won't last many days away from the Dark Tower book.

You will eventually read it. Mr. King has laid a trap for you. It is just like the trap The Man in Black left for Allie in Tull. She couldn't stop herself from telling her weedeating zombie friend, Nort, "nineteen." She knew that knowing the secrets from beyond the grave would drive her mad, but she just couldn't help it.
Stand and be true.

I didn't experience hesitation about reading Book 7, though I can certainly understand not wanting the journey to end. I believe JohnDanglish said it best; Ka is a wheel so in ways the journey never ends. For me, it's a journey filled with excitement, and, yes, even tears, but a journey you'll regret not making.
