Does anybody "referring to The girl who loved tom gordon" find it hard to visualise the bear/evil thing that is stalking the child? I never really understood what was following her.:smile2:

I never thought it was a real bear. I think that it was some type of evil entity in a bears guise. When you are alone in those woods the thought of crossing a bear is terryifing

There are lots of bears in the Maine woods- Could have been a bear. They can get pretty nasty too.
Long days and pleasant nights.

I think it is too easy to fixate on the bear. All that matters is that something dangerous was stalking. There is a primordial fear of things which rend and tear and dwell in the wild and darkness. What is more frightening, the ominous sound of something stalking you through the brush or knowing exactly what that "thing" might be? Terror is most potent when the element of the unknown remains.

You should be just fine if you stay out of the woods.

WELL,, I walk in Northern ONT., and i can visualize a bear quite easily , if fact i have ran into them on a weekly basis. Thankfully not any have been aggressive they usually take off when they see people walking on the paths.

If you truly need a visualization then check out the pop-up book of this story. Really cool!

Hi, i never really pictured a bear, more an entity with a similar stance and build but with no real features to distinguish its origin.

I would love to get my hands on a pop up version of the story.:smile2:

Hi Sundrop, i've tried to track the book down here in the UK and no luck so far, i've seen some on ebay for roughly £40 including delivery from USA so that might be my only option, thanks anyway,:smile2:

I think that Tricia is able to go on by believing it is a bear. In her heart she knows it is something other but the terror of that line of thinking would paralyze her so she allows it to be a bear.

All of the black bears that I've come across walking in the forest have been very passive and prefer to go their own way. However at the local ice cream shop there was a sign outside that read "Do not feed the bears". There was a little problem with bears looking for handouts and people would do exactly that, feeding them ice cream cones by hand! It was resulting in too many garbage dumpsters overtuned and trash being thrown around the parking lot.
I was a little disappointed at the end of the story "All that and it was just a bear!! You've got to be kidding!"

One winter my grandmother and I got lost hiking in the forest for a few hours. We found our way into an open field that didn't look at all familiar. Luckily, there was snow on the ground and we could follow our tracks back. The next day taking a nearby trail that was better known to us. We hadn't gone far when we came across two sets of footprints in the snow that stopped right outside the treeline. We laughed and laughed. We turned back when we were almost home! She later admitted she was a just a little bit frightened that we were very lost at the time.

I completely agree. At her young age, she couldn't conceptualize the evil "force" stalking her. It was easiest for her to manifest a bear as the big bad thing in the woods IMHO.... lions, tigers, and bears OH MY!!!!
