I'm intrigued by Twitter. I have no desire to know what Ashton Kutcher is eating for lunch or stuff like that. But several journalists that I watch are on it and I'm thinking of joining. Anyone have any feedback to help me decide?

I'm not on but I have heard it can be quite addictive.
I find it strange that we want to know what other people are doing 24 hours of the day. I'm with you on the Ashton thing or any other celeb not interested one bit what they are doing as I'm sure they wouldn't be interested in what I was doing.

I haven't tried Twitter. Whenever I read about it, I just end up feeling really old ;) I keep waiting for someone I know to get into it, so they can explain it to me.
It's weird, because usually I'm in to that sort of thing, I just can't quite seem to grasp the concept on this one.

I'm a big fan of Stephen Fry. He is a very good actor, comedian, TV Presenter, Writer and a very well educated, intellectual guy.
I have heard he is a big Twitter. I've also heard a lot of other presenters ridicule and berate him for being a Twitter....Why on earth would he want to waste time on there??? they have said.
I personally have not been on there, but hey...everyone has a choice to view, post, join and partake in whatever web sites, social networks etc as they like...thats what I say...
pointless or not!

I have a twitter account. It comes in handy to keep in touch with friends or family when they are traveling. Or if you are traveling with a group and want to split up.
I was also quite interested in the Pirate Bay trial that was happening in Sweden. I could get real time updates from folks who were attending the trial.
The part I don't understand is the need to document what I may be doing at any given point during the day.

Read the recent Doonsbury cartoons. They're great... they talk about 'twittering'.
Basically, the bottom line of the cartoon is Doonesbury's ex must have a myspace account or a twitter account, and is wasting the time of nearly everyone in the world that bothers to center even a minute of their day around whatever the hell some dude is doing.
I say Doonesbury must have an ex doing it, because his pretension is as clear as a hard rain. Then again, that's why I always read Doonesbury, even when I just don't get it in the least.
But hell, if you want to know if I'm in a 'Special Forces Dark' mood, a 'shadowrunner' mood, or a totally wasted mood, then feel free to read me. I'm out there somewhere, although, I must admit, I'm doing it because of how gay it is, not the contrary. If everybody is being gay, somebody's gotta kick in the door and show them why "straight" is the choice of natural selection.
If I was one of those myspace people, that lets everyone in the world know everything their best friends would know and opens the book of their lives like the legs of a beautiful virgin honey just dying to lose that title, then they obviously can't keep friends in real life, or they wouldn't need to shout it online in desperation. Their real friends, aren't enough for them, in other words. Course, I wouldn't go to my ex'e's myspace accounts if you paid me. They wouldn't be ex-es if they were worth their weight in salt, correct?
On second thought, read the 'Get Fuzzy' comic too. It's at the top, right in front of Doonesbury. That one is well worth reading, regardless of wether or not it's even possible to "get it". That little cat is such a jerk. He makes Garfield look like he has a very prominent halo.

I think this fits the thread quite well. Because at the very moment probably the most spontaneous online role play based on a work by Stephen King is taking place on Twitter. Some guys there seem to have taken the swine flu as a macabre opportunity to celebrate an hommage to Mr. King's longest novel "The Stand" and the brilliant TV movie based on his own teleplay.
It all started on 27 April when suddenly a profile for Mother Abagail appeared online. Only one day later, Randall Flagg appeared, and since then nearly every major character from the TV movie (accompanied mostly by pictures from the actors as player avatars) has taken his or her role in the "The online Stand".
Meanwhile, the registered Twitter user has the chance to follow @BoulderFreeZone, @DaynaJurgens, @digyourman, @frangoldsmith, @frannie_goldsmi, @JulieLawry, @h_lauder, @haroldlauder, @larry_underwood, @m_o_o_n, @MOONtomcullen, @motherabigail, @mylifeforyou, @Nadine_Cross, @Nick_Andros, @nickandros1, @RalphBrentner, @RatSnacker, @Stu_Redman, @Sue_Stern, and of course @VegasWalkinDude. This list is probably not up to date anymore when you read this, as the cast for this stunning out-of-nowhere phenomenon is increasing like the number of confirmed swine flu victims. Of course, the players mostly talk about Captain Trips instead.
In addition to this there have appeared some players for an online version of "The Dark Tower" as well, starting with Roland and loosely combined with "The Stand" by the newer profile of The Crimson King. The players' names are these: @alainjohns, @BillyBumblerOy, @cuthbertallgood, @kalikethewind, @LeadDealer, @sonofelmer, and @The_CrimsonKing.
Signing up for Twitter is free, of course. You can chose your own profile and start following the above mentioned players. As Jordan already made clear in another thread, Stephen King himself is not twittering, though both Joe Hill and Naomi King are. Should you like it, you can also visit my own profile @KingdomSearch, where I offer news, quotes, and the service of a full text search in all of Mr. King's works.
Let's just hope this whole flu thing doesn't turn out the way Mr. King wrote it down over 30 years ago.
Best wishes,
Dirk.

I dunno. I'm still on the fence with this twitter business.
At first thought it doesn't seem like anything I'd care to do.
I watch a shite load of news and it seems like all my favorite news people are doing it... except Keith Olbermann, who is my very favorite. He seems to be opposed to it for some reason, we may never know what Keith is having for lunch or where he takes his laundry... I can live with that.
But anyhow I think my curiosity will get the better of me one day and I'll have to check it out.

But I don't use it to find out what someone is doing every 4 seconds or something. And I couldn't care less whatever ashton kutcher is doing or thinking.

In addition to my previous post concerning "The online Stand" on Twitter, I want to tell you that George Law has written a script where you can see all related tweets on one website. So everyone who either don't want to follow each of the 30 players or don't want to register with Twitter in the first place, can now follow this still growing experiment on http://geolaw.com/captaintrips -- perfect for you, tillyn, isn't it?
Twitter user @georgelaw even incorporated some songs from the film (which are not on the original soundtrack by Snuffy Walden), for example the 45 seconds excerpt of Larry Underwood's "Baby can you dig your Man", conducted for the movie by Al Kooper.
By the way, isn't it a shame there is no whole version of that track? -- Or has any of you ever heard of one?

No matter what you decided, there is a life, of your work, going on as I write this. Characters from many books that you have written are being played out on Twitter. I just now discovered this. I am enthralled at the amount of detail these people use, to fully try to BE the characters from The Stand. It's fun. Albeit a bit surreal, I still think these people pretending to be The Kid, and so forth, are really bringing alive the concept of the book characters...they stay in role mode, too. So, maybe, if you wish to check it out, sign up under another name first, and take a look. Search for #thestand, and you will be impressed by the amount of people taking a part in this tale online, on Twitter, of all things. In my courses in fiction and philosophy, I will use this example, I am sure, for years to come. It's a new form of escapism, a new form of social media, and new form of writing. While it's not what I would call TRUE fiction, as I can not hold it in my hands, so to speak, it does take precedence as to what is occurring online, today, NOW. This may aid you in the future for ideas for more stories, or it may not. Either way, it's interesting to see which direction we are heading in, as far as fiction is concerned. So, I say, check out Twitter.

I have recently mastered the current apps on my blackberry and just don't think I am up to the task of tweeting. Also, I don't exactly travel in circles that tweet, so I would end up reading about strangers' poptart dilemmas (frosted vs. plain) and would feel horribly out of touch. While I find it intriguing that a whole bunch of people I don't know might be reading what I think I really don't know enough about it to know if that is how it works. Do the members read the general postings or are they all stuck 2 or 3 feet up the celebrity's a _ _es. I have posted some thoughts on there but I have no idea if anyone saw them.
I had heard that Ellen was a regular contributor and has several categories listed as contact points. Although I have a beef with her that seemed much too complicated. I have 5 cats and one of them had gotten strung out on Ellen's Halo Cat Treats. They are Pacific Salmon that supposedly natural and organic and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Since I wasn't there watching them manufacture them I have no way of knowing this for sure. All I do know is that they cost 40 bucks a pop for a very small container.
So after footing the bill for Cat Treat Rehab I wanted to tell her it's okay to make more money she just doesn't have to do it all this week. I'm now trying to get my cat interested in Crack. It would have to be cheaper.
So, I'm not sure.

Nah...I have friends online I see in online gaming. I have email and Yahoo IM which has phone service at low cost.
I only show my personal website (art, smithing, game-related images) to a chosen few if I know them very well.
Twitter sounds too intrusive for me.
From the Wiki article:
"Twitter collects personally identifiable information about its users and shares it with third parties. The service considers that information an asset, and reserves the right to sell it if the company changes hands."
May be standard, but I like privacy. Not fond of Big Brother or anyone else keeping his nose perched over my shoulder. My inclination is to have a severe spastic fit and fling a fist wildly backward.
I prefer to reserve the right to have some space without having another someone breathing down my neck so they can sell information about me for their own profit. There is enough of that as it is.

I think it's a matter of the safety net of anonymity. You can let your hair down. Unfortunately some people take it a bit too far. I know I'm much less inhibited online than I am in person (in person I tend to be fairly self-conscoious with a low self-image).

I admit. I was the one who started "The Stand" tweets once the swine-flu thing started. (And I use TweetDeck so people got hit by a lot of "The Stand" tweets.) Someone else may have started it, but I doubt it since I tweeted, like, 12 "Stand" tweets in a row tweeting things such as, "Har! Har! Har! Watch out for swine-flu." Anyway, if it wasn't me but actually someone else that started it, they're pretty cool in my book. Since then I did have Randall Flag following me, but I have yet to get past my recent follower-limit before I add him. Hopefully really entertaining and not boring/corny. :)
My biggest questions are... Doesn't Stephen King have an official Twitter that he exploits for good publicity potential? With what's going on in Iran right now, he should be able to see the marketing potential of Twitter.
I'd at least expect his son, Joe Hill, to have a Twitter to do marketing/promotion from. Joe Hill has a Myspace, but Twitter is so much better. Everyone's migrating away from Myspace now and has been over the past few years since Murdoch took it over. It's almost like an age group that gets over a certain kind of music or musicians and starts something completely new. The college-kids have grown up and are seeing what is beyond that level in cyberspace. ;) So is there a Joe Hill twitter?
I have a Twitter. I'll post the link for everyone's convenience once I earn the link-age priveleges :biggrin2: .

What ever happened to simply talking to one another? As far as the minute details of someones life, who gives a s**t? Anyone interested in what Ashton Kutcher had for lunch has no life.
I'm sad to say this, but MOST ordinary people have no life. I still run into people day in and day out who think that they can get things the same way that children can: be being lazy, throwing a tantrum, or using trickery. All of these people range from around 25-55.
Also, why do you think "get-rich-quick" schemes like the ones on TV at 2 a.m. and on Twitter get so much positive attention and customers?

I like Twitter, but it can become very addictive and if you follow a lot of people it can be hard to keep up. For that reason, I rarely log into my account anymore. I have enough work on my plate at the moment, and can only come to these boards on those rare occasions when I have a minute or two to myself.
The largest problem is that there are follower limits on Twitter that are kind of unfair. So you have to post more and do more to get as much of an audience as the big-shots (like "Stephen-King-social-status" for example).
Ashton Kutcher got his follower rating so high because of his growth of followers being rigged. (There are photos that are MUCH easier to find than Roswell pictures of billboards in L.A. etc saying "Twitter! Follow me! aplusk!" Some of you with privileges should post pictures of those billboards in this thread.)
Basically, why Twitter gets so much attention is that once you follow 2000 people you need to tweet ALL the time EVERY time to grow your audience. So, y'see, that's the marketing conspiracy magic of Twitter.

I'd at least expect his son, Joe Hill, to have a Twitter to do marketing/promotion from.
Hi!
Both Joe Hill (@joe_hill) and Naomi King (@revnaomi) have a Twitter account. So do Peter Straub (@peterstraubnyc) and his daughter (@emmastraub). Plus, there are several interesting accounts for Constant Readers such as the Bangor Daily News, The Maine Campus, or Scribner Books.

Twitter = Texting, With, Idiotic, Total, Trash, Everywhere, Remotely
But seriously, why would I waste my time with this application? I mean do I REALLY want to know what (said movie star, song writer, singer, etc) had for breakfast, when he/she had a cup of coffee, or even better when he/she woke up? I think it's just another useless piece of software to subliminally make us use our cell phones, computers and keep us chained to them 24/7.
I have an account and after a day, I thought it was useless and I don't use it anymore, nor do I see myself ever using it in the coming future.
My suggestion...don't use it.
Best,
Bal

Thanks! I am always looking for literary Twitter accounts. I usually block/ignore "internet marketers" even if they're reputable, because "internet marketer" these days is a title with as bad a stigma as "concert/club promoter". Unfortunately, there are so many new followers on Twitter boasting about how you too can supposedly make a million on hour just by sitting on your arse.

The trick on Twitter is to find a network that you can relate to and follow their relevant tweets. I started by following a handful of anarchistic discordians and now I have around 4000 followers. None of the first people I followed had anything boring to tweet.
I have more problems with the Twitter people who are just really depressed and lonely and desperate for attention. (There are some that are totally like that on Youtube.) Of course not everyone on social networks is like that. Due to the internet, though, some very boring people with major lack of self-esteem have a voice.
I'm just polite to them and pretend that I've heard of their band or movie that doesn't exist and that no-one has heard of.
But it's the ones that treat me like an internet celebrity (instead of the normal, lower-middle-class guy I am) that really make me run away from there! :P
