I LOVED this book! Of course, I haven't read an SK novel, novella, or short story that I haven't liked, but this is one of my favs so far... I'm moving on to Duma Key next, and am really excited cause everyone speaks so highly of it...

Does anyone else love Insomnia as much as me?

Hi,

Welcome to the MB, and keep posting!

Yes, it's a marvellous book and if you 'Search Forum' there's a thread called (I think) 'Why does everyone hate Insomnia?' that has a great deal of discussion about it, and there's also a Social Group devoted to it to which you're more than welcome to join, once you've reached the minimum posts required.

Long days and pleasant nights

Insomnia was one of the best! Especially the links to the Dark Tower. IT and Insomnia are my all time favourites..

I don't know whether I loved it as much as you; but I did like the book. Among other things, it was a nice take on ageism.

I love that book in a way it is the flip-side of IT. IT shows the kid's underworld in a town. Insomnia shows the retired people's underworld. I've read it four times. And I've read IT six times

I thought it was OK...... not all that good really. I mean anything is usually ok by Stephen King but Insomnia got a little more than "far fetched" and it felt like he really stretched at the end to wrap things up.

Duma Key is cool....

Loved it, it is one of my 3 SK favs: The Stand, Bag of Bones and Insomnia. Funny thing about it is that I didn't care much for Hearts in Atlantis or Dreamcatcher, which everyone raves about. Go figure. Even among the faithful (otherwise penned "Constant Reader") there exist variety of human preference.

I did enjoy it but it took me awhile to get into, not even sure why!

Hi,

I first read it before I read DT5, 6 & 7 and, while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I enjoyed re-reading it AFTER DT far more.

And of course he's on record himself calling it, and Rose Madder, as 'stiff, trying too hard novel'.

But then, he threw Carrie in the trash!

Long days and pleasant nights

Loved it! Here we are in the real world, everything so real and commonplace, but then things start happening..
He can write any age and do it well.
We need King to write the story of his life perhaps like Asimov did.
I think he has a kind of ruthless honesty.
I don't write like that I disguise myself.
It's like he is saying real life has horrors, like the lady who worked all her life in a factory and got lung cancer, this is horror enough he seems to say.
We are surrounded by horror really, the way a friend can become an enemy, the way we get old & sick, the way the horrible things we do can transform us into evil.
I think he has got it all down right.

I enjoyed it more second time around. Not the best book to start a dalliance with SK with, though (as I did).
HIA is enjoyable because...well, just because. For me, it was vivid. I could almost smell the cut grass of lawns and see the hopscotch grids on the pavement (OK, 'sidewalk' :smile2:). Dreamcatcher holds a special place, I think, because it is sort of the book that almost never was, and took a hell of an effort to write. I did come away thinking 'You've done better, Uncle Stevie', but really I was just glad there was another SK novel in the world.

I'm just waiting now for the stuff in the DT series to make the links in my mind to Insomnia, and then I'll 'get it' much more.

I've read it three times and listened to the audiobook once. It is probably his most plot driven novel but it's the main characters that do it for me. They even get a mention in Bag of Bones.

Wait, DT references Insomnia? That is so cool! I haven't read any DT past the Gunslinger.....please, don't smack me! The next few that I was going to read got stolen....then I think I picked up The Stand....then I forgot all about em...

It was a great reading, but I can't say it's one of my King's favorites.

YES I do love insomnia. It is pure genius. Towards the end of the book [about the last 300 pages] i could not put the book down. This is truely another of SK's greatest stories!

I am 2/3 of the way through. It is a very good book. I'll reserve judgement until I finish. I loved The Cell, Lisey's story, all of the Dark Tower, and actually everything I've read by Stephen King, so I am sure I will love the ending of Insomnia also. After Insomnia, I am going on to Just After Sunset.
