I cleaned out a basement of a house many years ago in North Berwick and found an old photograph of a house that looks like the one in Salem's Lot. I was told that was the building before it was converted into senior housing. Does anyone know if this is true? I have no idea if Stephen King ever lived in North Berwick. I still have the photograph. Just curious.

The house that was the inspiration for 'Salem's Lot was located in Durham, Maine, where he grew up. It is no longer there.

When you found the picture did you think about who lived there or built it, or the 'story' behind it. I love that. Anything old like that calls to me. I actually can see so much beauty in the smallest nothing. Did you hang the picture?

I have been told by locals here in North Berwick, Maine that Stephen King lived as a teenager on Prospect Street, in a house that overlooks a gothic structure today known as Prescott Heights. This building/campus is a HUD elderly housing center that you pass as you leave North Berwick on Route 4 towards Sanford, on your right. It is a striking facility with its very noticeable turret. If I am not mistaken, the opening credits of the TV movie from the '70's feature this structure in the background. If so, this would be a King touch.
If I am wrong on any of this - the locals suck!

Steve grew up in Durham not North Berwick. He graduated from Lisbon Falls High School which is nearly 80 miles away from North Berwick, but even in our mostly rural state kids wouldn't have to commute that far to school.

Stephen King did live on Prospect Street in North Berwick, (he was no teenager). It was the grey house on the corner of Prospect Street and Wells Street on the left as you entered Prospect Street, (a dead end). It was around the summer of 1973 and I used to mow his lawn. My sister's best friend lived next door and her mother hooked me up with that job. I met Mr. King only once and only very briefly. If my memory serves me they usually were not at home when I mowed and the grass was always quite deep. In any case that connection is my Andy Warhol equivalent to 15 minutes of fame. :-) Hope this helps!
