Hi all, has anyone else here read The Talisman by SK? How is it? I need opinions from you who have read it before i buy it. Is it worth buying it? If so i will go to the bookstore right away.
I bought Duma Key yesterday and bought The Stand, Geralds Game the other day. But I need to buy some more books written by SK. I have finished reading Carrie the other day and found it really enthralling and i really love it!!!
Any other page-turner books by SK would you recommend? Thank you so much! BTW, I am from China.:biggrin2: Nice to meet you all!! I am awaiting your replies. Thanks guys!!!

In my opinion, it's the best book I've ever read. Life changing I would say.

The Talisman is a great book. And after reading it, I recommend you pick up Black House, which is the sequel.
Then I recommend diving into the Dark Tower books, beginning with The Gunslinger. Talisman, Black House, and The Stand are all tied into the Dark Tower series.

Hi,
Welcome to the MB, and keep posting!
Yes, it's a wonderful book and highly recommended, and you've many a great read in front of you. I agree about following it with it's sequel, Black House, and then starting the Dark Tower cycle with The Gunslinger and Drawing of the Three.

I'd read Hearts in Atlantis after The Talisman and before Black House, then read the Dark Tower cycle.

The Talisman is spectacular! One of the books that started my SK addiction. Definately do as agent4CK says and pick up its sequel and the Dark Tower series. Most King books have a relationship with the Dark Tower books.
Another good one, in my opinion, is The Dark Half.

Wholeheartedly agree, read The Talisman and the Black House (not the other way round like I did, then think "oh, that makes more sense now.")
Also read the Dark Tower books in order. I read The Wizard and The Glass years ago and thought it was rubbish. Revisited the series much later, in order and including Wizard n Glass again, and in context it's a completely different read.

That's great news, Bev, especially so that Robin is writing it! I am so enjoying the DT comics and The Stand comics; now there's even more to look forward to. Woo-Hoo!!

I'm actually reading The Talisman right now! I'm about halfway through, and it is starting to get really good. In my opinion the first 100 pages is kind of tough to get through, but I'm now hooked.
Very excited about the graphic adaptation. That should be great!

Thanks all for your replies. I bought The Talisman last night. But i didn't get Black House as i didn't know it is the sequel of The Talisman. Ok i will begin with The Talisman then the Black House. Thanks for the advice.

I would definitely recommend reading The Talisman. Not only do you get SK but you get to read Peter Straub also. Peter Straub also wrote Black House with SK.
I suggest reading Insomnia along with the above mentioned books and then read the Dark Tower Series.

Talisman is a great book one of Mr Kings absolute best stories. Pick it up and while your at it pick up the sequel as others have mentioned.
You in no way have to read these various books in between various books in the DT series. Enjoy them how you want to and in what order you feel like reading them.

The Talsiman is a very excellent SK book. I think of it as SK, even though, technically, it is a collaberation. It fits well with Eyes of the Dragon and the DT series. It is a classic quest fantasy, and is therefore the overall generally more upbeat than SK's more realistic fiction, though Jack endures some terrible hardships along the way. MOst of it seems to take place in "our world", than the Territores, though, and some do not like it when Wolf dies .

Yep. Got to add my praise to the others for this fabulous book!
Ive read it maybe four times over the years and get just as hooked each time.
Sounds daft but its my "second favourite" book of his..........now Black House - I did enjoy the story very much but found it much "harder" to read than the Talisman. But dont want to put you off it as its also well worth a read!

I just commented else where on the board I've tried 3 times over the last 8 years to read TT (I love Black House). I was about 100+ pages in this last time before I set it aside for The Stand (again, for the 20+ time) After reading all the praise, I'm going to make the push to finally finish TT and then reread BH.

I've just finished The Talisman for the first time... what a book. I don't think it claims the top spot for me but it most rightfully claims position number two and I cannot wait to get started on Black House now. I think I might try and not start another book until it arrives!

WHAT? What fabulous news! That's a great way to rekindle the light after just finishing a book; fits so well with the ending, too!
(Is it Stephen that's going to write it with Straub? Sorry for possibly misinterpreting your post)

Awesome book, although I found Jack's battle against his uncle to be a little anticlimatic. I didn't think Black House was half as enjoyable, and I have also heard rumors of a Talisman 3.

Now I feel stupid for not picking this book up today, lol. There was a hardcover for 3.95 at a local thrift shop, and I was THIS close to purchasing it, but ended up purchasing 3 other King books. The reviews for this seem to be overwhelmingly positive. I think I may go back for it.
I hear a lot about this book and others being connected to The Dark Tower series (which I have yet to read), but I've also heard "Insomnia" is connected to the series as well, and I wasn't too fond of that one. Is The Talisman (and the other books that people claim to be connected to The Dark Tower series) similar to "Insomnia?"

It's like IT crossed with Lord of The Rings. Imagine if the most resourceful IT kid had to make a long journey for magical reasons.

you'd be the best judge of that, once you read them. i've enjoyed all of sk's stories, though, insomnia included. the talisman is a journey, nice storyline, some great characters and though most of sk's stories are connected to the d.t., that is no reason to conclude that they will be alike. all of the states in the union are "connected" but the topography, as well as the flora and fauna changes from location to location.

Wow, I never thought I'd hear "IT" in the same sentence with "Lord of the Rings", lol. But it sounds exciting! I haven't read or seen "IT", but I have seen the LOTR movies. I love them.
This book sounds very facinating. I should be starting it tomorrow.

Thought I'd just mention something--
I have a paperback copy of The Talisman from the late 80s and on the back of it it says "Soon to be a major film".. And now they're thinking about making a film-- seems to me like it took them a long time to do it.

I'm about 100 pages from the end at the moment. I'm reading it for the second time. One of Stephen's (and Peter's) best books in my opinion. Unfortunately for me I was given Black House to read by a friend after I had read the Dark Tower series. I read it before the Talisman and although it is a great story in it's own right, I think you really need to have the Talisman story in your catalogue before reading Black House.
