Hi,

Out of curiosity...how many others from the SK board are currently working towards the completion of a manuscript?

I'm wondering how many writers are among us.

I have a massive first draft I have to strip down.

I've done some ghost writing for someone else and have had those words go into magazines. I have to get some stuff out there in my own name, ya know? No credit for ghosting, at least not from what I know.

Hi,

Poetry's my thing really, have had some published, and am working on enough of a collection for my own book. I have started a novel, but it is FAR from being finished. I'll keep going though!

If anyone's interested...I've discovered a couple of decent publishing companies that don't require an agent to review your work:

There's a series of books from the Bulwer-Lytton "Dark And Stormy Night" Fiction contest; the idea is to write the worst possible opening sentence for a novel. One of my entries ("excrable prose" as the contest calls it) has been published in one of the books.

i'm going to write my first novel soon. it's called Draginon. it's pretty much my fantasy story that i hope will be a trilogy. in order for me to get into it i'm drawing a map of their world. so far the only characters i have are Draginon our main hero and his twin brother who's a dragon by the name of Drako.

I've completed one manuscript and I am probably a third of the way through my second. Maybe one day I'll get published.

http://www.manuscribes.comlooks like it might be a good place for authors who havn't signed with a publisher yet to get their work out there free of charge. They'll put it up in ebook form. Their bookstore isn't open yet, but they're taking submissions.

I urge up and coming authors to be very careful about rushing to see their work in print (or in ebook form) with just any old publisher. Make sure of what rights you retain, what you'll get out of it, and what impact these publishers might have on your future career.
I reccomend Sai King's advice. Do the work. Make the rounds with agents and publishers. Query, query, query. Enter contests. Submit to magazines. Good work will find a way into the literary light of day.

I'm one of the club :grinning:.

Completed my second novel two months ago. Got my first refusal nine days after sending it out.

As for the first one, I keep on collecting publishers' refusal letters gaily : I must be close to the 50th negative answer. Costs a lot in stamps and envelopes, too...(about 500 dollars up to now, I reckon).

I've got a cultural question to you Americans : do the publishing houses ask you to pay also for the stamps when you get your manuscript back ?

Well done for the publishing ! Good sales ? Any plans of translation into English ?

I've completed one short novel and am knee deep in the edit phase. I also have a second in progress and a third outlined. One short story was published at Everyday Fiction last year, and I have a couple flash shorts at Associated Content for the heck of it lol. I hope one day to be published, though not through the POD or self-publishing methods; I agree with Sai King on that aspect. :smile2:

Most places require you to pay postage if you want your manuscript back. Most places to NOT charge a reading fee, though. So if they want money for that, move on to the next one.

I'm still working on perfecting a few short stories before looking to submit them. The proofreading process is the most tedius and painful process for me. I think SK said that once you think your manuscript is done cut a certain percentage of words so that's what I'm trying to do with my short stories before looking to find the right places to submit them.

Most of my job involves writing for publication, but it's legal writing and my name gets no attribution. I wish I had the creativity to write fiction, but I think I'm missing that gene. Everytime I've tried to write something creative since back in college (when I took a short story writing workshop), I've immediately stopped because what I wrote struck me as unoriginal or trite or just plain boring. Maybe I'll get over myself and try again when I reach retirement...

I am still writing. Slowly. Stephen is right in his "On Writing." You have to write with the door closed. This is something that is kind of hard to do. While on this subject, does any one feel embarassed about writing?

I'm very young still, but I really hope to be a writer. I will start what I think is a good story and it just goes dead. My goal is to publish at least one book before I die. A book about me that's published after I die would be okay too I guess :biggrin2:

I'm working on a number of stories, and am currently an editor for a new horror magazine called Shock Totem.

I have just last year begun to submit stories. I've received only rejection slips thus far, but hope springs eternal... I have no doubt I will be able to publish something somewhere eventually...

The best advise I can give to any fledgling writers (other than to keep writing), is to JOIN A WRITER'S GROUP. It's amazing how many flaws you will be blind to in your own writing until others critique it. I highly recommend it.

Hi,

I am in the club, I suppose.

Currently busy with the second draft of my first horror novel, and have a short collection of short stories sitting here in my desk. I guess I should be done with my novel by August and after that I'll be going on to the publishing scene.

Only problem is that my first draft was too short, and my second one looks like it is going to be too long. Oh well, that's life. :smile2:

I've never felt embarassed by the fact that I write. What was (still is at times) difficult to not feel self conscious over was carrying around a little notebook, jotting thoughts, descriptions, and the like down as I people-watched.

Hi folks,

I've got a question : do you follow or at least have you experimented the method Stephen advises in On Writing, namely, not plotting anything, not doing any preliminary work, just writing on and on and on to dig and unearth the (pre-existing) story until it naturally ends ?

Did it work ? Did it enhance your writing ?

My two novels I wrote in a more traditional way - jotting down an outline of the story and writing a brief summary of each chapter before actually starting the first draft -, I'd like to try Stephen's way but I'm afraid my story will go in all directions and I'll end up lost.

What do you reckon ?

I don't write any notes, but I can't just jump in and start writing with no idea of where I'm going, or I just stop cold after a few pages. I've had ideas pop up while in the process, though.

I think the important thing is to hang loose in terms of plotting. Don't outline yourself to death, or be afraid to change something if the story seems to suggest it.

I'm currently working to complete my second novel. I'm about at the point where I want to bang my head against the wall because it's taking so long. Life issues keep eating the time I have to write. Things have eased up as of late, and hopefully I'll have more time on my side.

I've had one novel, two short stories, two magazine articles, and five stories included in anthologies published. Lot's of rejections as well. I think all of us here are lovers of the written word whether reading or writing them! I'm so glad to be here with you guys.

My two novels I wrote in a more traditional way - jotting down an outline of the story and writing a brief summary of each chapter before actually starting the first draft -, I'd like to try Stephen's way but I'm afraid my story will go in all directions and I'll end up lost.

What do you reckon ?

I'm one of those who can't plot - or follow one even if I try. Creative writing tutors have gone mad at me in the past for not plotting, but I find either that the writing doesn't flow if I plot in detail, or I just lose interest because I know the end before I even write the beginning.

The closest I generally come to plotting is to write the idea down. I might have mentioned before how thick my ideas folder is - about 250 or so ideas for different stories that I've had to make a note of, or lose forever. Most of the time, the ideas come as I'm writing something else. I can't possibly write 10 things at the same time, so...
What it means is I already have my life's work sorted. It also means there's a good chance I'll die before I'm done, even if I get through them at a rate of 4-5 per year. After all, I'm always going to have other, fresher ideas and I'm in my mid-30s already.

For me, Stephen's 'way' is not only the best way, but pretty much the only way my writing stays fresh. Stories often wander from where I thought they might go, sometimes by one hell of a way, but by and large they don't end up becoming a tangled, confused mess - I think that only happens if you try to 'correct' the course and drag it back to a plotline, either written as a firm rule or locked in your head as a guideline.
Just let it flow, and go where the story-river wants to take you, is my (humbly offered) advice. :smile2:

I am a writer. My work is making it to print. I found a decent self publishing company that will publish your manuscripts and then keep them on their website as Print on Demand. Though I should have someone edit my next story, because there is a lot of errors in my first novel. Hey, hey though... I got it in print and next step now is to find a publisher.
I have two poetry collections done and one novel. I am also writing for free on another website that publishes stories. There is a catch though, it is pg 13 rated so I cannot write material like my novel.
My poetry collections are:
"Duct Taped Heart"
"The Highway Phantom: Book of New Order of Darkness"
My Novel is:
"The Legacy of Storm: First book of the Brotherhood of the BornEye."

I guess I better get on writing the second book now. Though I don't want to, because my main character Storm sacrifices himself in order to save his family. He does come back in the third book. The Gods don't like him and hell doesn't want him... Oh... check out this website for free publishing and print on demand:
http://www.wordclay.com I have no upsets so far. I just need to edit my work, or have someone do it before I publish it. So far The Highway Phantom is my best book. I will be using that one to get my foot in the door. Maybe I should use the broken one that way I won't feel new pain in my good foot. Just old pain at a higher level.
Here is the pg 13 rated website:
http://www.elfwood.com
I am under this website as wulfhurley82, I have so far one chapter of two stories up. I have one fan all ready wanting more. I am also working on another vampyre storey. I am not sure about this one, but I am going for it.

I've been working on a fantasy novel for a long time. (Won't say how long--it's too embarrassing.) Currently working on the final revisions and hoping to finish it soon. I tend to work on a project forever, which I know is the wrong thing to do. Can't write 70+ novels that way. At least my novel has an ending now.

I finished a short story last weekend, revised another and hope to write a few more in the next few weeks.

I've also written some songs, only performed by me (my poor family). I've found this site to be a great place to talk to other writers. i'm kind of new here myself, but i've already met some great people. good luck! i don't know how to send you a personal message first, but feel free to message me if you want. i love talking to others who share an interest in telepathy (if you didn't get that, read SK's On Writing. I don't have anything published, but I am a writer. I've written quite a few songs, but only a few have been recorded. I've also written many short stories over the past six years. However, I mainly spend my time working on an arsenal of novel ideas. Two of which now take up the majority of my time.

I write for pleasure not for publishing. My friends seem to like what I write so it's all good. I have no plans on ever looking for a publisher I just do it for fun or when I have a story in my head that just won't go away.
