I just finished listening to, "From a Buick 8". I believe it is the first Stephen King book I have "read". I was VERY suprised how good it was. It was not as scary as I had thought it might be.
Thanks Stephen!

Hello and welcome to the board! Ah, but if that was your first, then there's an entire universe of works out there still to be enjoyed.
If you liked SK, might I suggest Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Stand, or It as your next SK experience?

Hi :smile2:
It's interesting to me that you commented about From A Buick 8 not being "as scary" as you anticipated. I've always thought of SKs books, or at least most of them, not all, as being more psychologically scary instead of horror scary.
Hope you enjoy your next "read" as much as your first and I'll second the suggestions by bopropadop.

If you want something truly creepy, may I suggest Lisey's Story. Not sure if it's available on Audiobook yet though. This one actually made me hesitant to stop reading and go to sleep. I was afraid I might have nightmares!
(Strangely enough I instead dempt <?> that I was shopping in a mall I've never been in, and in one store Music of the Night was playing on the Muzac and a flutist was trying to play along but messed up, and it became my job to belt out an impromptu solo. Very odd)

Buick 8 was not one of my favorites, try the Dark Tower series, or the Talisman and The Dark House. Green Mile is also excellent and it is not scary.

yeah, I agree - sort of sci-fi scary - makes you wonder if there are parallel universes and other things out there. I think SK has produced much more of this in recent years whereas earlier novels have been more horrific.

I've been reading King on and off for years. Haven't read Buick88 yet, but Christine was pretty cool, too, though not on my faves. What's great about this author is variety you don't often get in others. There will be books you love and books you didn't get into, but he can always be counted on to deliver a unique story

Welcome to the wonderful world of SK. Hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us do. From a Buick's 8 was a great book i finished it in 1 day. I couldn't put it down. May I suggest Salem's Lot if you want a good scare or Different Seasons or if you want one a little scary and will make you think what about The Long Walk.

i've heard from a friend of mine who said "From A Buick 8" is pretty good, though I myself have not read it yet.
My first book was "The Gunslinger: The Dark Tower 1". :-)

I've been reading Stephen King since 1978, the first book was 'The Stand', although I'd seen 'Carrie' but didn't know it was him. He's seen me through the birth of two children, two divorces, a bout with alcoholism.. and countless other traumas. I've read 'IT' at least a dozen times. By the light of a gas lamp, it got me through Hurricanes Katrina, Gustav, and Ike. Guess where I live? :)
BTW, I'm reading 'Four Past Midnight' right now, first edition, the hurricanes took all of the rest.
Best book? The right book at the right time, whether it be the 'Green Mile', Shawshank Redemption', his short story anthologies, 'Insomnia', 'Talisman', they always strike a chord.
Try them all, some of them may not agree with you at the time, but they might do in the future.

I'd definitely suggest The Shining. In my honest opinion, it might have been the peak of old-school King horror.

Welcome to our world! Glad you liked Buick, although I personally didn't care for it. Being an avid SK reader since 1986 or so, I expected something different.
I agree with all the sentiments posted here, if you want truly scary, scary books, look no further than Pet Sematary, Salem's Lot and IT. The great thing about SK is his diversity. He has something for everyone. My mom for instance, never thought to pick up one of his books, being a history nut. She mentioned liking the movie Dolores Claiborne :vomit: and how she wanted to read the book . I bought it for her and now she is hooked, threatening to steal all my SK books.

Although most people don't share my opinion, "From A Buick 8" is one of my favorites also. I found it interesting and a page-turner. There are so many books that you will enjoy. If you want an awesome scary book, read 'Salem's Lot. It was so good:)
I am jealous....you have "first times" coming up!!!

I haven't read FAB8 yet. But from what I have read of the collection so far, I really liked The Dark Half, Insomnia, The Stand, Duma Key and Needful Things, I'd go for the last one as your next adventure. There's so many to choose from, a little bias but you can't really make a wrong turn now with any KING book you pick up. Happy reading! DKK

I agree totally with you about his books being psychologically scary as opposed to horror scary and that's what makes them so enthralling. No disrespect to you, but I can not imagine only having read on SK novel as I have been reading them for more than half my life, I too agree with the recommendations, although if you are not a big reader, I would wait for the SK addiction to kick in before tackling the stand as a lot of people I know are intimidated by its length, I on the other hand was disappointed that it ended, I just wanted more, but hey that's why we reread the books we love.

Welcome to Stephen Kings house of horror. That was my least favorite books, I think as you come more involved you will be thrilled. Read the Eye of the Dragon, IT, or The Stand.

Normally I would recommend taking on the Dark Tower books, but if Buick was your first, my guess is that more seasoning is needed before diving into that masterpiece.
My personal recommendations for your next endeavor would be some classic King so you get the flavor of his typical genre (of which i believe Buick is a deviation from):
IT: everyone mentions it for a reason - a true classic that will scare the crap out of you
Needful Things: A classic King book that will grab you and suck you in - 750 pages flies by on this one.
The Talisman: An endeavor that is as much (or more) psychologically scary as physically. Great story
The Stand: One of his best. Maybe don't read it next, but should be read early in your pursuit.
The Long Walk: A Bachman book that will scare you in a much different way than most of king's books.
If you decide newer Stephen King is the way to go, then try out Cell or Duma Key - two can't miss reads.
