I thought the ending was great and in no way surprising. Throughout the first six books, Roland's character is defined by his single minded goal of breaching the Dark Tower and gaining the top. He is the ideal figure when one thinks of a wandering knight who has lost the true thread of what is important and twisted the ideals he started with to suit his goal. He is a man in need of redemption. As the 3 Kings in book 7 say, his prophecy of gaining the Tower is self-professed, not the prophecy of End-World, which is that he would save the beams, thus saving the tower.
The only other option for an ending that I would have thought was appropriate was that he ceases to be, or is in some way punished for his hubris (being sent into Todash darkness?!?!), but I prefer the idea of redemption that follows from the ending we got.
The only issue that I really take is that if the true prophecy was to save the beams, and not breach the tower itself, then there would be no way to save Patrick, and that Mordred has what the Crimson King does not, a way of opening his path to the Tower, and therefore he could free his Red Father, and they could breach the tower together. I admit that this is a pretty large consideration, but Roland could still do both those things and not breach the Tower himself.
Hello everyone! Bryan here--long days and pleasant nights. I'm new to this forum, and earnestly seeking some solace after having just finished the entire Dark Tower series a few hours ago. (BTW: this post contains spoilers, and as I am new, I can't figure out how to hide them!).
I find myself filled with so many feelings--to say this series is epic is an understatement--it's flawless, an historical masterpiece. Blah blah blah I could go on forever about how wonderful it is, but you all know it already, hence why we have this board! So I'll go on with my struggle.
It isn't that I hated the ending--on the contrary,
Any other thoughts?

I have to say, I am pleased to have had the privilege of being entertained by the whole series at first I found it hard to adjust to the Gunslinger but by the end I was thirsting for more and who cares if the ending is unexpected so what! I have had hours of pleasure along this journey and you should be so lucky that there is a writer so talented still alive, that can give us something like this! didn't you say the you read the whole series? surly that is reward enough! it is for me at anyrate. I say more power to you Mr king.
I just read your opinion about the ending of The Dark Tower. I had the same feeling when I just finished reading too. But when I thought about it afterwards I thought it was one hell of an ending. And King explains his reasons very well in the afterword. I still dont understand everything in the Dark Tower. I have tons of questions I would like to ask SK. But I'm pretty sure he doesnt know all the answers and the ones he may have I may not like or understand anyway so I just made my peace with the story already. Like he said “it was all about reaching the tower" well I did reached it and I enjoyed all the seven volumes very much. Twice in fact because I read the books a second time some years later and the second time was a little bit different and better....wait a minute....... Stephen King wrote the Dark Tower, and the readers followed.
Hey guys im new to the site... I Just wanted to through a theory out there about how CK and Flag where represented in the final book. I just read the last page last night and i have read alot about the ending witch i have grown to love... there was no other way. But alot of people have more of a problem with the anticlimactic fights through out book 7. Here is something i thought about. We all know that Mordred is said to be the one that will kill Roland if so then could that mean that Flag himself and CK cant hurt Roland? Or that there fear or darkness dose not effect Roland. It would explain CK useing Mordred to try and kill Roland and why there was not as big of a fight between Roland and CK. Or why he had to use booms. Could be why Flag was trying to inlist the help of Mordred since he cant kill Roland himself. I hope this help and im not just crazy the ending keep me up thats for sure keeps your craving even after the book is put down....
I was let down at the end too. I was a my school library one day and I realized that they actually had every single Dark Tower book so of course I got all of them out and read it in the following three weeks but buy that Friday... Aside from that, Roland is awesome. Like a tom cat but more... legit? cool? I don't know but he's the best character in Stephen King history.
