Ramsey Campbell is definitely an author of quiet horror. The horror he writes is like an apple on the kitchen table. You think is safe to eat, just an apple, nothing exotic about it. Eventually, when you get to take the first bite, you see it's full of maggots.
I'm currently reading The Darkest part of the Woods by Campbell. I initially started it in 2008 or 09, but I had to put it down. Now I started it from the beginning, and I actually like it, a lot. His way of observing the characters is very much present in this book. Still almost 100 pages to go, so I can't tell how this going to turn out.
