Wow. They could have just put an announcement in the paper that people could come and get free books, then put them in a really big hall and open the doors. Or indeed, donate them to a charity. Hell, they could have made 250.000 homeless people happy with a gift at christmas.
The only way I could agree with the destruction of that many books is if they were ragged and falling apart, either from age or use. And even then, it would be to recycle them, not stuff dumpsters with them.
