I, like many of us, feel that political correctness has been taken to ridiculous extremes the past few years but I don't really consider this issue political correctness, I think the name is offensive and it's time to get rid of it. I don't have a problem with the other Native American names like Seminoles, etc. but "Redskins" is different. I think most all of the high schools and colleges that used that name have replaced it so I think it's time for the NFL to drop it too. The Washington franchise would not be hurt by this. They are not going to lose fans over a name change and as far as the cost of a name change goes, their current merchandise would be snapped up by collectors in about 5 minutes. There are other costs involved too but I think maybe the league should offer to help pay for those instead of defending this name. It's time for the name to go.
The team has been called the Washington Redskins since 1933. I don't find the name offensive, and I agree with Roger Goodell.
I also personally feel that congress should concentrate on the real problems in the country.....but that's another thread
Been a 'Skins fan for many years, Congress should not be intefering in our daily lives, team names, light bulbs, TV sound, fer pete's sake, when was the last time we had a budget. My family could not exist without a budget, yet my country has none.
Don't change it!!!! I like how the Seminoles in Florida want the University to keep their name because the appreciate being considered great warriors. I'm with Sunny on this....Congress neeeds to focus on something a little more important.

Re: Washington Redskins name
I'm always at the head of the line for some Congress bashing but in fairness to Congress (there's a phrase that I don't say often), the Native American groups are pretty active in petitioning Congress on this issue so I can see why Congress would meddle in this instance . Another reason Congress meddles in the major sports (other than shameless self promotion) is that they have issued anti-trust exemptions to the major sports and they don't want to appear that they are allowing organizations that they have granted these very valuable exemptions to be practicing any type of racism.
Put aside for now the fact that Congress is involved in this issue and just think about this...
To those who are not offended by the name Washington Redskins, what if it they were the Washington Ni***rs, Washington Sp*cs, Washington Go*ks, etc? All of these words were perfectly "acceptable" also in 1933. I believe Redskins is as offensive to American Indians today as these other words are to the nationalities they demean. The Seminoles are an Indian tribe, the word "redskin" is a derogatory word for American Indian, based on the supposed color of their skin as seen by the "white man." You cannot compare the two.
