Interesting discussion of Tommyknockers/Under the Dome. Plenty of good ideas expressed therein the podcast. I enjoyed Tommyknockers...both stories...but I enjoyed T-k...I liked it...I liked it a lot. Booga booga. I enjoyed the idea of the dome before there was the Dome. But as I listened, I wondered how many times SK had used the term white trash in UTD? I'm reminded of many one-post thread openers here...to do w/the matter. Too, I'm reminded of Padgett Powell's intro to an edition of Huckleberry Finn, the way he cited a couple of scholars...I assume they are scholars...who else would count the number of expressions of the n-word in Huck Finn? One had something, the other had something else.
Anyway...to do w/crystal meth...I dunno what to believe or know about the matter, but I don't believe white trash is an expression one should use in conjunction w/crystal meth. Imagine a day, say a hundred years from now, when some wit logs onto the message board and asks the Moderator, Is Stephen King's great grand-daughter a racist? She uses the expression white trash so much, in every story!
Members will, of course, rush to the defense of Stephen King's great grand-daughter, who is only after all putting the expression white trash in the mouths of the vile, the mean, the ugly. The expression, they will argue, is used in dialogue, by mean folk, who mean to hurt and to belittle. On and on it will go. Perhaps some ancient member there will recall, vaguely, an ancient thread wherein Stephen King was taken to task for the use of the n-word.
Twain it is clear from his writings, did not mean for his use of the n-word to be taken as it has since been taken. Or something.
Too, the Big Talking Heads no longer use the expression Third World Country, a signifier without a signified. Columbus, that twit, took a wrong turn at Albuquerque. New World, Old World, Third World are signifliers signifying colonialism, so out of fashion. Developing Nations is in vogue. Eventually, 100 years from now, when Stephen King's great granddaughter is a best-selling story-teller, white trash, red neck, trailer trash, and the variety of other signifliers, will also be replaced, or...no longer in use...like the n-word. And like Twain, perhaps many will eventually see the bigotry in terms like yeehaws and the like. But I'm only one dog barking up a tree...so carry on, carry on, as the song has it, as if nothing really matters.
I think the point is...that SK did not use the expression white trash in UTD...or if he did, I read it so quickly that it was sublimated in the blur of words...and that explains my desire for a Pabst Blue Ribbon...now I understand.
