There is an odd syndrome called Munchausen's syndrome, which compels a mother to kill their child(ren) in an attempt to garner sympathy,and/or other rationalizations..
...OK, here's the nurse in me coming out....

Münchausen syndrome is a psychiatric factitious disorder wherein those affected feign disease, illness, or psychological trauma to draw attention, sympathy, or reassurance to themselves. It is also sometimes known as hospital addiction syndrome, thick chart syndrome, or hospital hopper syndrome. True Münchausen syndrome fits within the subclass of factitious disorder with predominantly physical signs and symptoms, but in addition they also have a history of recurrent hospitalization, travelling, and dramatic, untrue, and extremely improbable tales of their past experiences.[1] Nurses and doctors sometimes refer to them as frequent flyers, because they return to the hospital just as frequent flyers return to the airport. However, there is discussion to reclassify them as somatoform disorder in the DSM-5 as it is unclear whether or not people are conscious of drawing attention to themselves.[2]

Münchausen syndrome is related to Münchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP/MSP), which refers to the abuse of another person, typically a child, in order to seek attention or sympathy for the abuser. It is an obsessive want to create symptoms for the victim in order to obtain repeated medication or even operations.

    Her words from the article:
“At the moment I’m just trying to get over what has happened. It’s been as upsetting for me as much as everyone else involved. I think about them every single day.”
How the heck do you "get over" killing anyone, much less your own children?
AND....."just as upsetting for her as everyone involved"......REALLY???

The Canadian justice system thinks it is being enlightened and tolerant when, in fact, they are putting the children of our society at risk. This woman suffered from depression.......so what? Depression does not mean you have the right to murder your children! As we speak, another woman who immigrated from South America to Edmonton, is sitting in Alberta hospital awaiting her fate after drowning her eight year old son in the bathtub. Her sentence will be less than you get for driving while impaired. She asked to go on AISH...assisted living for the seriously handicapped, but the government wouldnt give it to her....that is one of her excuses. Once, they use to come into our country and get aish for culture shock. It is amazing that I could not get it with recurring cancer and I was born here. The government is starting to wise up on that. The justice system is a big joke.

There seems to be some kind of weird legal phenomenon where people that kill their kids seem to get treated lightly. I don't get it.

Munchausen by proxy was not discussed in this case. I do not think the mother tried to make them ill before, no record of repeated trips to the ER or anything.

thanks, gnt...i was beginning to think that this disease had something to do with european folklore or terry gilliam movies...

i agree wholeheartedly staro...maybe not %100 onboard with the DP for this one...but, given more facts, i could change my mind..

i, personally, do not support the DP for those actually impaired by illness...that sort of thing might be a mitigating factor that would seem, in an ethical environment, to be better handled by a life sentence...or a near life sentence

and i certainly don't want to see such easy judgements become the de facto rule...or everyone'll try to claim they had depression..or some psychosis..or whatever...

they killed 52 people because mommy didn't breast feed 'em 52 years ago

no mistake for me,whether you have a syndrome or mommy didn't treat them right as a kid..there is no rationalization for murdering a child..and just cause there is no record of treatment, doesn't mean mommy wasn't experimenting with different levels and substances of poisonand different victims..poisoners truly scare me,because they can choose people at random and are not always found out before they kill a lot of people..
